Blacksmithing - Forging a bell

  • Today I show how I make a bell inspired by bells made by Uri Hofi. Quite simple and not very scientific when it comes to sound... I made three of these and the first two that I didn't capture on video both sounded better than this one, so it's a bit of hit an miss... The geometry is probably really important and that both halves are tuned together for better resonance. Anyway a fun project.

I liked the juxtaposition of the ancient craft of forging to the ultra-modern lawn-mowing robot!

Love the pitch and resonance of the bell. And the lawn robot was a nice touch as well as the garden "fly-through".

The garden scene turned surreal. I felt as though I was watching a scene from Star Wars or another sci fi film. Colonist guy on another planet out checking his crops as a robot trundles by tending to the more mundane task of trimming the verge! The mix of your old world knowledge and skills mingling with the use of advanced technology, performing a menial chore, is kind of a minor mind blow! I love your videos.

New to your channel about 3 weeks ago and very slowly I'm working thru your archive, one at a time (sometimes over again before the next) like savoring the mashed potatoes and gravy part of my meal... being careful not to binge and miss out on the full flavor.
It's not the place But the journey... it's not the finished piece but the tap tap tap in between with the beauty being rooted in the process - watching how you think... so easily that comes across
Each and every piece emanates some bit of soul as well the videos do themselves.
You are leaving a fine library of work not just for your viewers but for your children and someday theirs as well.

Pretty job. You always use boiled linseed oil, is there any reason why? When I was at school the metalwork teacher usually went for dirty engine oil to give the steel a semi weather-proof blue finish. May I suggest that when you produce these videos you them a difficulty rating. Your anvil really is a credit to you, simple measures to prevent unnecessary damage. Thanks for posting.
