  • This video is showing how all of the parts are assembled without being inside the turret housing. The clamp piston is actually the spindle housing. If you run coolant, the turret spindle bearings will probably be contaminated and probably will need to be replaced when the piston clamp cylinder o-rings start leaking. The spindle bearing preload should be minus .001" when fitting the spacer. The bearing part number is IKO NAX 6040.
Also, you have to install the piston first, along with the piston cap that the curvic bolts to. The spindle shaft will not fit through the hole in the piston cap. Then you can install the spindle with the new bearings, while mounting the index housing that is located by the 7/16" dowel pins in the video.
We were able to assemble this turret in 6 hours today and that included referencing the turret. So much for retirement. :)
If the machine crashes when the turret it is clamped up, the 2 halves of the curvic takes the all of the impact. You will probably have to loosen 6 bolts to square the turret to z-axis travel, and loosen the outer bolt pattern on the tool plate to get the tools back on center. If you crash the turret while it is indexing or not clamped up, you are going to destroy those 2 dowel pins and the turret will not index properly when it changes directions. I have only seen this once, and it was on this turret. Those 2 pins are deep inside on the turret.

I hear hardinge filed for chapter 11. Are there any aftermarket suppliers for parts?

They did file. You can still get parts from them, but a lot of specialty items are long lead times. They quoted 4 to 6 weeks for the bearings but the customer found them from a bearing company and had them in a couple of days. I don't know of any aftermarket places, but I do know that Feeler, the company who copied the HLVH have parts that interchange.
