Meet Ivan - A Gorilla's Story

You may remember Ivan the gorilla that lived in a shopping mall for many years until he was released to Zoo Atlanta. This is his story as told by Jodi Carrigan from Zoo Atlanta who worked with Ivan. Presented by the Jr. League of Cobb-Marietta and Crossroads Library.

I personally remember Ivan. Right after our mother died I was there at the B&I with my little sister.She was so devastated about losing our mother that she didn't even really notice Ivan there.I was watching Ivan looking at her. He studied her for awhile and then kissed the glass right in front of her! It was just like he knew.

I took my daughter to see him at least once a month at the B &I for years. Was so glad he was moved to a bigger location but missed him. My daughter cried when he left.

This was the 1st book my son ever chose completely on his own (he was 8 yrs. old) and he absolutely loved it. Now that he's 13, we are packing up his kiddie books and re-discovered this gem. When he saw it, he picked it up and said "this was really a good book". High praise coming from someone that would normally rather play video games than read a great novel.

I used to visit ivan at the B&i weekly for over 10 years. Lakewood Wa 1986 i met him. The b&i today is just a indoor swap meet today. It's adress is tacoma washington but that is really lakewood wa. Tacoma starts at 74th street.

I am so incredibly disgusted with how Ivan was cast off by his 1 St human human family. We're they shocked when a male silverback gorilla grew to be extremely large and strong???? Then because of reasons beyond his control they gave him away to a ARCADE????? WHAT A LIFE!! IVAN IS MY HERO!!!!!

I would go and see Ivan at Zoo Atlanta every Sunday during hunting season. My husband and son would go hunting and I would go to the zoo. I have hundreds of pictures of him. I would talk to him and he got use to me and would pose. I use to call him a beautiful boy. I loved him and got to go after hours on a special night. I truly loved him💞💞💞

Sorry. Jodi Carrigan loses. The B & I store was started in 1946. Named for the initials of the first names of the owners who started the store. Ivan was raised in a home with the Johnston family who lived in the Manitou neighborhood of Tacoma, Washington. He arrived there in 1964 and wound up at the B & I in 1967. Just saying.
