- Did you know that it was claimed that Archbishop Cranmer smuggled his secret wife on is travel in a box?
It sounds like something out of a Tudor drama-an archbishop sneaking his wife across England in a ventilated chest! But is there any truth to this wild claim?
Join me as we uncover the fascinating story of Thomas Cranmer and his secret marriage to Margarete, the niece of a Lutheran preacher. How did they keep their union hidden during a time when clerical celibacy was law? And where did the bizarre tale of the "ventilated chest" come from?
This is a story of secrecy, scandal, and a smear campaign designed to tarnish Cranmer’s reputation.
Watch now to separate fact from fiction in this colourful Tudor tale!

I’m so happy to be seeing you everyday again! ❤
Thank you!
Me too 😊
Yes, I am happy to see you again.!
This has to be one of the most bizarre tales told to slander religious reformers in Henry VIII's reign. The early precursor to tabloid journalism.
Almost as silly as the warming pan incident in 1688
@livesouthernable I haven't heard of it. I'll have to look it up.
Yes, a very strange tale.
Perhaps it's not a tale but true? Cant and hypocrisy are not exactly unknown to organized religions even the COE.
@@eveywrens Look it up! It' a hoot! Of course if James had had an ounce of common sense the story would have been impossible.
Claire, this video was such a delight to listen to! When I was catching up on my notifications after quite a busy week, I saw this one and immediately jumped on it.
Naturally, I have seen The Tudors and remember seeing him smuggling his wife from Germany into England in said box. However, I never looked into it. Now I don't need to, thanks to you. This one was particularly fun and I hope you enjoyed making it as much as we enjoyed listening to it!
Hello! Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I do love looking into things like this.
Hello Claire 😊 I've often wondered about this story, it wouldn't have surprised me if it had been true.
Some pretty cooky stuff went on in those times! 😂.
I'm glad to hear it wasn't true.
Thanks Claire for the video...I enjoyed it. Hope all your family are well X
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I can't quite imagine how Margarete would have copied if it were true!
Thanks for looking into this one Claire. I vividly remember seeing this depicted in The Tudors 😊
If not in a box I do wonder how Cranmer successfully managed to keep his wife out of sight for so long 🤔
Perhaps she was passed off as his housekeeper or servant, or perhaps she just didn't go out.
Loyal servants and living quietly in the country would be my explanation.
@@dorothywillis1 So hard to keep secrets in Tudor England especially if a person had enemies and people out to get them.
@@Shane-Flanagan True, it would be interesting to know the details.
Thank you for this! I won't lie, The Tudors is such a guilty pleasure for me. I know it's not historically accurate, and in fact, one of my favorite things to do is point out the things I know are wrong with it while I watch. I always wondered about the whole Cranmer keeping his wife in a box thing. It always seemed too ridiculous. 😂
BWAHAHAHA
I loved the lead. You just have to click on it to find out. How sad his wife had to go back to Germany. Relieved she got to return. What a dangerous time in England. Under Henry 8 or the Church, so many were in danger.
Very dangerous times!
It was Mary I who killed him though. So brutal and casual. She could have had him executed by ax.
Claire, have you ever made a video about Eustace Chapuys and his time as Spanish Ambassador to England? That man was EVERYWHERE 😂! I'm fascinated by him
Of course Nicholas Sander had his fingers in a story like this - after all, he rhymes with slander. Great story, thanks Claire. Take care.
Ha! Yes, it does rhyme!
It has taken way too many years for this gossip to reach me! I call BS on the dozens of Tudor Halloween specials that didn't include this.😅
Where do they keep all the files on dates of coronation wedding s of Henry's. And what photos are real love ya channel
There are all sorts of sources for dates of events - Letters and Papers of the Reign of Henry VIII, which is an archive of documents and letters, such as letters written to a from the king and his council, ambassadors' dispatches etc. There are other archives and then we also have contemporary chronicles.
The photo is from "The Tudors" series, but the portraits I share are historical.
Thank you!
Sure! And each of the kids had their own box too!
Ha!
As much as it was made to slander Cranmer, it does have an obvious logic. If you had a wife who you weren't allowed to have, you would have to put her somewhere if you needed to move her around. Also in The Tudors it lead to a smart bit of writing after his wife gave an impassioned speech about why she hated the Catholic Church. She then said "now you can put me back in my box."
It makes a great story, though
