  • Long tank car train with DPU shoving on the rear. Molten metal railroad cars and flange greasers. Ancient Chesapeake And Ohio Railway signal still in use. This train stuff is in Russell, Kentucky. The huge tank car train has a spotless newly painted and rebuilt Distributed Power Unit shoving on the rear. I chased the DPU and filmed it pushing the train again at AK Steel in Russell, Kentucky. That's where the molten metal cars are sitting and where the old C&O signal is still in use. AK Steal shut this plant down and its going to be torn down. Also check out the old train station in Russell, the yard tower, the caboose and the blue water. There is all kinds of cool train stuff here and today the railroad is owned by CSX. Norfolk Southern is on the other side of the Ohio River. Hobo Shoestring and I were here in Russell a few months ago. What do you think about the rebuilt DPU on the rear of the tank car train? Leave a comment below. This video was filmed October 6, 2021. In the early 60's growing up in Hamilton, Ohio I once made a nighttime ride with my Dad to the Armco coke ovens and blast furnaces along Augsburger Road. Dad wanted to photograph the glowing fall of hot coke being dumped from the ovens which was a spectacular sight at night. While Dad set up his camera and tripod we were treated to the passing of those "torpedo" cars full of molten iron from the blast furnaces. The train carried the molten iron up along the Great Miami to nearby Middletown and Armco Steel's rolling mills. I still remember feeling the heat radiating from those cars that would tilt to dump the molten iron! Thanks Jawtooth for a trip down memory lane!

When I worked at U S STEEL we called the pollack cars torpedo cars. I powered some up on night shift when they had a bad pour of iron. We dumped them in no3 slag pit. I was running a GE 44 ton center cab switcher. What's on top is part of the lining so the molten iron will not melt through the steel torpedo. When these dump it's very hot even in the winter. Can't get within 100 feet if it splashes the molten iron will burn through almost anything. Spectular explosions in the winter when the molten iron covers ice. It vaporizes the ice into steam and explodes. I have 3 of these cars on my model railroad and a treadwell cinder dump car that transported molten slag. Another cool video 👍!

I had one of those C&O signal towers across from where I grew up. It was on that same mainline in your video, where it crosses through Charleston, WV. Those signals all were replaced with the new type. Good memories playing on the tracks picking blackberries right off the bushes along the tracks. Kids today can't even imagine how we were adventurous and free. Great black cat 🐈 action at the end.
MRS Railroad in Brazil is painting their rebuilds yellow instead of blue. It's a nice look and makes it easy to pick out the rebuilds. It also instills national pride as Brazilians know the work was local. That is something we have had stolen from us in North America.

That CSX tank car train did a slow move through Russell, Kentucky. You showed us the molten steel cars from the now closed steel plant. You asked us to comment if we have ever seen this type of car in action. Thomas M. Leahy mentioned the molten steel train that travels between the Acelor Mittal steel plant in Riverdale, Illinois to another steel plant owned by Acelor Mittal in either East Chicago, Indiana or the Burns Harbor, Indiana area. As far as I know Norfolk Southern still runs this train as needed between the two Acelor Mittal steel plants. It has been a couple of years since I have seen this train so there is a possibility that the train may have been discontinued. There are also videos of molten steel cars in use at steel plants in Northwest Indiana. These in-plant trains are powered by remote controlled switch engines. Thank you for documenting the tank car train, the area around the Russell, Kentucky depot, the old Chesepeake & Ohio signals, and the abandoned molten steel cars.

Jaw Tooth, TANKS for the video of the tanker cars (Lots of Denature Alcohol) . That was as long as that early morning, Virginia, street runner. Saw those Molten metal cars in action on the south side of Chicago back in the day or should I say night. They were pulling them across the road. Did not think much about it back then, but it was a bright glow and every so often, it would spew out, what I would call LAVA burst. I believe there was folks walking with them taking care of any fire stuff (Rolling slowly).

1st train, an ethanol train with a brand new unit at the rear. Nice, never been on one of those. That tower bldg is probably not used anymore but looks good.
Yes, those are bottle cars. I've seen trains of 2 cars from Indiana steel mills being brought to a roll steel plant in Riverdale Illinois, near the east end of the B&OCT yard at night, spooky glow coming out the top of the cars.
Those new units have AC power instead of what used to be used, DC power. The 3 shiney squares up top behind the cab are probably for the dynamic braking bjsystem. The traction motors switch from using power to drive the train to producing power, which heat (what used to be cal rods, now probuses up huge amountsably a new and better version, with probably a new name) units behind those grates, which also have fans to cool them off. This production of heat uses huge amounts of power, which produces a huge amount of drag @ the traction motors, which are used for braking which is variable by use of the throttle handle. I'd like to ride on one of those new units, the old ones were pretty smooth riders. There weren't many old style signals left in the Chicago area after all the modernizations in the 1990s-2000s. There used to be quite a few weird signals still used in the 70s, early 80s, but they were disappearing after that. I think the most complex signal system I had seen were on the CNRR, with over 30 different types of variations around plants that cross foreign lines.
Jaw Tooth, thank you for your interesting videos which include trackside gems like flange greasers, retired equipment, cabooses, bldgs, old signals, etc. What was that huge bridge in the background? It sounds like the area is a mecca of rail activity.

First, they are not brand new units. They are ex CSX AC4400CW ex #200 series rebuilt units with new cabs, fully overhauled and refurbished engine, radiators are improved, instead of GTO thyristor inverters new IGBT ones , ballasted to 432000lbs. Yes, those are 3 vents behind the cab for dynamic brakes. Inside the cab you have throttle notch 1-8 + additional one dynamic brakes 1-8. Engine in question was built in 1997. Never been DC traction. That's the case with NS rebuilt units AC44C6M ex Dash-9s #4000 series. 🙋💛💙⚡💪

With over 48 years of railroading, I believe those are the first molten steel cars I have seen or even heard of. And I live in the shadows of a recently closed steel mill. When I read your title I wondered what a, “Molten Steel Car,” would look like.
We had, “Molten Sulphur Cars,” but they looked like regular tank cars. My understanding was that they were loaded with molten sulphur that would harden while in transit. To unload it at the destination it was reheated to the molten state.
These molten steel cars look like they may be kept in the molten state during transit. I wonder how far they could be moved? Great catch JT. I believe just spotting those cars was worth the trip. I’m going to do some research on them.

Those old hot metal cars were used to transport molten iron from the blast furnaces to the open hearth furnaces. After the open hearth furnaces were charged with scrap, the molten iron was added and the melting and refining/alloying process would begin. I work in Bethlehem Steel, in the open hearth, in the 70s. It was hard, extremely hot work, but at the same time very interesting. We called those cars subs. They rotate to pour the iron in to a ladle.

Hey Jawtooth -- Love your train videos. I am not sure if you have ever seen a track crew at work, but those guys are pretty amazing. I live right near the tracks for Buckingham Branch Railroad (a short line whose tracks are used every day by CSX). They were replacing the wooden ties UNDERNEATH the tracks today. The equipment and team work was pretty interesting to see.
They pretty much knock them out from one side to the other and they have a device that forces the new tie into place. Not sure how they "spike" them down, but it must be one hell of an effort to do several miles of track! It is obvious that no trains can come through while they are doing that. You would have loved to have made a video of those guys!

7238 looks brand new Jawtooth -not a rebuild -no old dents showing-just painted over ?? That was a good catch -some tanker train too !! The old furnace cats are another good catch -plenty of details to see . Another Jawtooth classic video !

Made by WB Pollock in Youngstown, OH. When I worked on the Erie Lackawann / Conrail, they us to run 6-8 hot metal runs from Republic Steel - Center Street to Warren, OH, Hubbard, OH and Sharpsville, PA. 95% of hot metal trains ran to Republic Steel - Warren, OH. They were referred to as either Bottle cars or Torpedo cars, depended on the crew.

The Huge Backlog at the Nations Ports involve both Trucks and Rail. On Average, 1.2 Million Tractor Trailer Drivers Licenses are assigned each year in just in the United States. Because of the Covid Pandemic in 2020, Truck Driver Training Schools were shut down. Many long time Truckers in the Industry decided to Retire and both of these items explains the Nationwide Shortage of Truckers. The Media failed to cover these details. 🤪👎

At 11:20, Now that is how to start a train from a stop!!! If the DPU had been an occupied caboose, the conductor and / or the rear brakeman would have to be watching the ground to know they started moving.

Great video. Sure lots of train traffic around there. Love Chessie & Norfie. I remember seeing a video some time back of a train that shuttled the hot metal cars between buildings, which I guess were the foundry and the mill. It was on RUclips but can't remember whose it was. Sorry.

'Bottle Cars' are still in daily use at the Cleveland Cliffs (Acelor Mittal ) Steel plant in Cleveland Ohio. Loaded on the East side of the river then moved to the West side to various operations. Best place to watch would be on Independence Rd. on the East side. Block house for the Power Units is just before the river crossing. Maintenance Shop is just pass the river crossing.
