  • The elite women’s and men’s races on the final weekend of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships take in the climb of Mount Keira after arriving in Wollongong (from the start in Helensburgh). There’s a 34.2km loop that sends the riders up to an altitude of almost 500m before dropping back down to the coast via Mount Kembla.
On Saturday, perfect conditions greeted me in Wollongong. I parked up near the site where the world championship races will finish, near Flagstaff Hill, and kitted up to ride Mt Keira.
The ride was interrupted by roadworks, giving me the perfect excuse to back-track and climb up to the Mt Keira lookout, to overview where I'd come from and where the worlds will be...!
This is the story of my ride on Saturday 6 August 2022.

Australia has been on my bucket list like forever. It's moved up even more because of the love for cycling you show and the efforts you make for making cycling enjoyable. It will stay a dream probably - I just should have relocated like 40 years ago 😀Anyway, from BE, I love to see you Aussies getting more and more into the sport of cycling, nice champions you have there. And maybe sometime, I might get a 'summer house' out there ... here's hoping ...

It was a short ride, but a lovely one. It cheered me up, even with the little setback (of the turnaround) and plenty of hassles with batteries - mainly cameras but also shifting...!
Still, a good day and glad you liked joining me on the ride (even if via a screen).
It was work on the weekend, but exactly how I like it. Better than the office any day.

PS. Had to take it easy (and maintain diaphragm breathing as much as possible)... rib fractures are still healing but getting better every day now.

Yep another 40 metres and it’s a fantastic lookout. Also where the road was closed, there was no traffic management there and you could walk through but locals kicked up a stink I believe. Mt Kembla are is beautiful too and another great lookout there also. Another great vid brother

Great video Rob. The road between Mt Keira and Mt Kembla has always been problematic. Part of the road has slid down the mountain and it's down to one lane for a section of the road just before you get into the village. I hope that's what they are working on because I don't know how you are going to get the peloton through a 3 meter wide section of road. The road from the top of the village down to the pub is quite scary. You are looking at a very steep technical downhill section with no barriers and speed humps about half way down. Should be exciting to watch.

Plus the right that happens just after the steep section. Unfortunately that's going to catch out a few riders.

Thank you very much! Beautiful photography.
A shame this is so early in the race. Probably won't have any impact. You think?

Ah - 20 more metres though that little detour and you'd have found yourself at Robertson lookout!

Really? Damn... I thought there was quite a viewing spot nearby (memories of my younger days), but I had my lovely new shoes on and didn't want to go bushwalking in the middle of the ride - not this time.
