  • Jimmy and Mark are joined by Ryan Muckenhirn to discuss staying warm in the dead of the late season winter hunts. We discuss everything from clothing to shelter, understanding of course that everyone has their own personal preference for how they like to stay warm, but it never hurts to get a few new ideas now and then. Mark obviously brings up the incredible merits of the puffy jacket (Which we all agree on here), Ryan discusses his extremely well-thought-out cold weather shelter setup, and we toss out a few other tips and tricks based on personal experience for not freezing your you-know-what’s off out there!

Hmm . . . Came here for an episode on all the Weatherby cartridges, but stayed for the cold weather clothing info. I'll just hang around until the Weatherby cartridge info is given. Thanks, guys!

A back country food podcast would be good as it’s something that I think most of us struggle with. After a day of dehydrated meals your intestines are angry and if that’s all you brought for a 5 day hunt, you’re going to regret it.

Check out these guys, they know to hunt. And put on a feast, buffet style, which lets you know what tail gates and picnic tables are for.

Best overland vehicle is a Quigly 4x4 van hands down. Never forget your whiskey fellas. It's like a sweater you wear on the inside.

Camping and backpacking has changed so much since Boy Scouting in the 1960s and 70s. Canvas tents and WW2-Korean War military surplus gear...
My Mother's old VW Wesrfaila camper with a pot a potty and an auxiliary gasoline-fired independent heater set a high standard to match, even today, for car camping. Ice box, water, sink, Coleman stove and a tent awning.

I think Ryan says it best. The key is to let heat radiate away at a rate that is comfortable. Too fast and you are cold, too slow and you are too hot and will sweat, which will then freeze. I learned the hard way, working in the trades in extreme temperatures. Do not wear two pairs of socks. Where one pair that breathes. Yes, your feet will be cold but a dry cold is less damaging and more endurable than a wet cold.

    Milwaukee Jacket owner here.
Game changer. Imagine being able to turn an electric blanket on when its below zero and the wind picks up and then the freezing rain starts
They make it in a couple different flavors, the highly recommended version from myself is AXIS 2 layer: the synth liner with the heavy duty rainshell.
Biggest problem is the weight. I think its 4 lbs without the battery. If you are on a trip where you have very little chance of rain, leave the rainshell at home and save 3 of those pounds.

Also as an aside. Long time wrench spinner here. The ultimate overland is the one that gets you there and back. You can find a lot of people living in the back of their moms 1990s Taurus Station wagons out west because that is what they have.
Also to Jimmy's point of over taxing a cooling system. The only way a vehicles cooling or oiling system has problems are lack of maintenance or inherit design flaw from the manufacturer. All vehicles should be able to maintain normal operational conditions for any length of time. I service vehicles that stay running during the cold weather months for weeks at a time. Most of that is idle time, most of the rest of that time is wide open throttle operation.
Also, also, the newest edition solar chargers work well with Milwaukee battery chargers.

I’m on board with the butt getting cold. Most western (Idaho/Utah) etc hunters are already use to chilly hands, chilly feet and ears…it’s whatever. Me, and several of my friends however will agree, cold hams or butt is uncomfortable, we’ll sit on our heavy coat or something avoid the ground sucking our life heat from us.

Creosote is what you're talking about from burning green wood. Kind of like carbon buildup in your barrel but very flammable.

I wouldn’t hunt without my camo Milwaukee jacket. It’s lightweight compared to a lot of layers to keep warm.

Alot of info, as always!. when it was brought up about idling your vehicle for heat, it's not that big of a deal. people in the northern states and Canada warm up their vehicles for extended periods every day in the winter and to compare idling your vehicle for hunting compared to a police cruiser is a bit extreme. really enjoy the podcast and keep up the 10 min on the calibers!

Ya, if idling taxes your cooling system, something is broken in the cooling system. They have a fan for a reason.

Just so you know CO is heavier than air so I'm not sure a vent overhead will do much to protect you. I think a bottom vent would be safer.
