Aziz Sahmaoui grew up in Marrakesh. In this city he absorbed both traditional Berber music as well as the omnipresent music of the Gnawa brotherhoods. The Gnawa music is a fusion of classical Sufi tradition and animistic influences from West Africa. The music is very trance inducing and is said to work therapeutically. There is a close relationship with the music brought to Morocco by the West-African slaves. In the late eighties Sahmaoui emigrated to Paris where he mixed reggae with North African music in his famous Orchestre National de Barbès. University of Gnawa is his next project. Sahmaoui is now experimenting with the combination of North African and Senegalese rhythms with the Gnawa trance. With his band, consisting of Senegalese and Moroccan musicians he reaches exciting heights.

Aziz SAHMAOUI nous plonge ici sans fioritures dans la Belle Tradition, toujours solidement porté par un présent puissant sur lequel il navigue et nous emporte comme sur un grand fleuve qui avance inexorablement dans la modernité.
Ce que j'aime tellement chez ce merveilleux Artiste, c'est qu'il empoigne à bras le cœur et le corps son Art, pour nous le faire partager, mais vraiment : le plus sincèrement, le plus authentiquement du monde, pas seulement parce qu'il est un excellent musicien qui se produit sur une scène, mais davantage comme un Grand Initiateur du Partage d'un Art Ancestral qu'il maîtrise à la perfection : qui soigne et qui guérit par la transe Thérapeutique.
Ils sont tous si généreux aussi : ce SONT DE BELLES PERSONNES que je ne me lasse pas de contempler, d'écouter avec tellement de bonheur.
Son "University of Gnawa" est une réussite : c'est là qu'il se réalise vraiment et où il donne toute sa mesure.
IL FAUT QU'IL CONTINUE DANS CETTE SI BELLE DÉMARCHE : c'est sa voie ROYALE

IL y'a une erreur impardonnable dans l'organisation de ce festival;on a commencé par ce qu'il y'avait de plus africain.on aurait du cloturé ce festival ,plutot,par ceci.
Culturellement et dans la tradition gnaouia, ce morceau s'intitule ftouh rahba ! tout spectacle gnaoui commence par ce chant ..
