Charlie Manson was sentenced to death. He avoided that one. Life without parole means life without parole unless the criminal can get some high powered attorney to get the conviction tossed on a technicality.

I really respect this judge. She's very respectful but also has complete control over her courtroom. I appreciated that she was no-nonsense about any trial delays.
How can you respect a judge that over sentenced him? The state of Georgia does say life without parole can be given for rape, however it also says a sentence of no less then 10 years but no more then 20 can also be given. He deserves to be in prison but not for life. I have never heard of a judge sentence someone to life with no parole for rape before

No. In the USA a "life sentence" doesn't mean staying in prison until the day you die - there are sentence reductions for good behaviour and a point where you become eligible for parole. Life + X means that even after your "life" sentence is spent, you still have more time to serve.

Since then most sentencing guidelines in Georgia have been increased and if you are sentenced to "life without parole" that is exactly what you will do. If he had been just 'life' he would be eligible for parole in about 30 years. If you look at the sentencing in southern states you'll see one can get more time compared to other states especially that one southwestern coastal state that borders Mexico.
