I think you did what I usually do when my reading slows down, turn to a favourite author. For me that would be Le Guin, Wyndham, Priest or Shaw at this point. I might also reread a favourite book. A short book.
That is often my tactic! And Wyndham, funnily enough is one of my go-tos also. The Day of The Triffids with it's amazing descriptions of London as the blind shuffle around it.... That is probably where I should have gone after being disappointed by Shaw.

Maybe, he certainly has great writing. Like yourself it has been a while since I read any, so this is like discovering him for the first time almost.
Must give Ballard another go, tried reading High Rise and dnf'd it, zero likeable characters so I didn't give a hoot what happened to them.
High Rise... I don't recognise it. I did find Powers quite relatable, if not exactly likable. Maybe try a short story or two?
