  • Just a few thoughts on people feeding Magpies and wildlife in general really. There's a lot of attention on this kind of thing due to the recent story in the news about the people in Queensland who domesticated a Magpie so I've been getting a few comments about this kind of thing.

People tend to be more worried about other people feeding wildlife than they are about the fact that cities and logging and industry has completely wiped out habitat.

The movement where I live, is to plant for the birds, instead of bird feeders; so various berries and fruit, things that produce seeds they can eat. shelter plants. Basically having a more natural environment for them. Not sure how that is going, but that is the push. Sounds like you know the birds, and are interested in their well being. Have a lovely week.

I don't think feeding birds is an issue.
Especially since I live in a city, I am actually giving them something healthy like seeds instead of discarded fries they find elsewhere.
And pigeons? They ARE dependant on humans. They are domesticated animals, feeding pigeons should not be forbidden but encouraged.

If someone lives in a high population area, and feeds a magpie every few days, and other people do it too, then the magpies can get fed completely by people by just rotating houses. Same for other birds. So one does have to be a bit careful.

Absolutely. Problem is the no feeding approach only works if everyone stops feeding them, and it's hard to account for what other people are doing. Given that it's very common for people to feed them meat or cheese, I'd say that if you live in a highly populated area where they could be getting most of their food from humans you'd actually be helping them by offering them the nutrition they need. It's a very tricky situation with no perfect solution
