Back in the day when we actually had world class players, the Ballon Dor was an award that was based off of who the best individual player in the world was and people were able to differentiate between a player’s performances from their collective achievements and we saw this with Messi and Ronaldo for many years with them putting up ridiculous stats, in recent years, there are people who’ve pushed an agenda for people to be part of the conversation for the Ballon Dor just because they were part of successful teams and we saw this with Jorginho in 2021 with how he made the podium as he was on a team that won the champions league and the EUROs even though he was nowhere close to being the best player on either Chelsea or Italy as he was a good player on a team that won a lot of trophies.
I don’t understand the agenda Real Madrid fans are pushing for Dani Carvajal to win the Ballon Dor. I have respect for what he has achieved throughout his career and last season was a successful one for him collectively and individually, because he won another champions league title with Real Madrid scoring an important goal in the final against Borussia Dortmund he chipped in with some big goals throughout the season while being a solid defensive fullback combined with the fact that he was a key player in a Spain team that won the EUROs as throughout the tournament he didn’t put a single foot wrong, but the guy isn’t even the best player on either his club or national team. Real Madrid’s success in the champions league and Spain winning the EUROs was more of a team effort meaning that Carvajal contributed and played well, he was a good player who was part of teams that won a lot of trophies, he not the best player on Real Madrid, he isn’t Spain’s best player either and how are we giving a player Ballon Dor shouts when he isn’t even the best player on his team.

After the FA Cup final, I don’t think that Pep Guardiola was over exaggerated when he said that Lisandro Martinez is a top 5 center back in the world. Antonio Rudiger Ronald Araujo Manuel Akanji Ruben Dias Alessandro Bastoni William Saliba Virgil Van Dijk are all clear of him on current form most of them are. For me when he’s fully healthy he’s an elite center back and he’s a top class defender who just helped Argentina win the Copa América where he didn’t put a foot wrong in defense and he has as many goals scored as goals conceded in this tournament as after 6 games; they conceded 1 goal and a lot of Manchester United fans rate in him highly and he’s arguably their most important player because despite winning the FA Cup where he was excellent in the final against Manchester City, they would’ve finished higher in the premier league and gotten Europa League football or made the RD of 16 in the champions league if he stayed fit for most of the season.
When it comes to rating players, can we please stop the bias whether it’s at club or international level, because Martinez is a great defender, but when we’re ranking the best center backs in the world, availability has to be taken in consideration. It’s true that when he’s on the field he has played very well, he has missed more games with injuries at Manchester United in 2 seasons than he did during his entire time at Ajax and how many games has he played in the last 12 months apart from the Copa América. Some of the injuries he was picking up wasn’t his fault because he was part of a team that was struggling to plan his recovery accordingly and their medical staff was responsible for the amount of injuries they had even though people are ignoring the fact that some of their players are injury prone and that for another conversation. Technically every time you miss a game with an injury that goes on your record no matter what circumstances your club deals with. The delusional of Manchester United fans is beyond me you cannot have these debates with Man United fans because you can disagree with me on this, but a guy who can’t even stay fit for a long period of time is one of the top 5 defenders in the world when he barely even played last season and in football it’s not just about how good you are, you have to actually play a significant amount of games in a season and then we can have a proper conversation about where he ranks among the defenders in the world right now. If he has an injury free season and performs, then Martinez is a top 5 defender.
