I remember that day so much as it happened yesterday. As Sri Lankans it was the worst natural disaster for us and the term tsunami was unheard of for most here until then. I'm happy that people across nations who faced this tragedy are now moving on as they can. We will never forget the people taken from us on that faithful day. May they all rest in peace.
When the tsunami struck Aceh, I was just a K-2 pupil in Medan, North Sumatra. For some reason, I have no memory whatsoever of the disaster during that time. My dad was involved in some of the reconstruction efforts with the aid of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) as a structural engineer.
Aceh should construct evacuation bridges throughout the town to provide safer places in case of future tsunamis. The terrain is mostly flat, making it hard to find high ground.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20yrs. All these poor people who were lost in this nightmare. I too was on Holiday Vacation in Mexico with my parents when we saw it on the news. We were simply crushed by this tragedy. This is something no one recovers from, only learns to live with.
We have marked Tsunami Evacuation routes in coastal communities where I live because of this disaster. Hotels and resorts give pamphlets to visitors with info on what to do. I’m on the other side of the planet. Eyes were opened that day.

*International laws* are very clear on the South China Sea: - parts of it belong to some ASEAN countries, including Indonesia 🇮🇩, - the rest of it is the international water, - no part of it belongs to China🇨🇳 or Taiwan🇹🇼.
It appears that people in the area are still at risk of future tsunamis. Since 2004, not much has changed. New houses have been built along the shorelines, and they likely won't be able to withstand powerful waves. There are no tall buildings visible, which makes me doubt where safe evacuation sites would be and how quickly residents could manage to reach them in an emergency.
The safe set back for hundreds of kilometres stretch of shores are not practical. What's important is accurate early warning systems and quick mobilization of evacuation personnel and resources.

As you can see on palu earthquake 2018.. not only tsunami occured.. ground shaking and liquefaction also happen.. much important when the disaster happen during the day or night time.. it will make all things get complicated.. too many factor that will make worse.. communication and electricity is another thing when disaster happen..we can say anything as third person.. not as victim who experience it :)

Completely incorrect! The US forked out about 900 M USD … less than Australia who forked out about 1.1 B USD … China paid about 90 M USD. Thats still not bad, pretty good taking into account powerful nations going forfar less and plenty of countries giving less than 1 M! Stop smearing propaganda and fake info into the comments!

The high population density around the earthquake epicenter made it into a mega disaster
Half the deaths were in Banda aceh which only has 11,000 per sq mile... Which isn't really that high..... New York City is 27,000 per sq mile.
