I owned a Paris Dakar GS for 26 years and did 330,000 kms on it. Beemers rise at the back end when the throttle is opened - in effect the back wheel is being pushed onto the road - chain drive bikes do the opposite and squat when the throttle is opened. This is the main reason they are so good on dirt roads. I could open the throttle on a wet winding road, 2 up with luggage, lean the bike and open the throttle and the bike would power slide - hitting a white line helped too - both feet on the pegs - I'd overtake big bikes, sideways, leaned over - fantastic feeling. The best bike I've owned/ridden.
Excellent documentary on the BMW GS! It’s rare to see moto content talk about how RELIABLE, versatile and successful BMW motorcycles are. The GS is a real world tested motorcycle and it won many endurance races?!? This certainly isn’t something that has been widely circulated. BMW and the GS are legends. I’m glad videos like this exist to acknowledge that fact❤️
The best was the R80GS i bought in 1984. Super light and simple and reliable. Sadly for me the latest GS looks like a Tiger tank. Too big too complicated
A boxer has that incredible low center of gravity and low speed control no other layout can match. Would be great if BMW introduced a R900GS shaft drive on 1 September 2020 to replace the current F800GS, which is in itself an amazing motorbike but does now require a 70Kw motor, a diet to shave off a few Kgs while retaining range and hauling ability to again dominate the market. Who knows...
Great documentary. For those that are interested, the 6-day trials referred to are still being held here in the UK every year (known as the Scottish Six Day Trials) at the village of Kinlochleven, where I used to live

But I have never ever in my live heard of anyone who owned a GS and thought it was a bad bike. There were a few, me included, who found out it is not the perfect bike for them. I own a F650GS Dakar and it is a great bike. But I realized that I don’t ride as much offroad as I had hoped when I bought it so I want something that is more road focused than the 650 Dakar but still capable of riding any fire road and with an engine that is smoother than a 650cc Single. So I will be picking up a 1200GS very soon.
I may own 2014 Honda CB500X, but I acknowledge that BWM is the benchmark to which all adventure bikes are judged. Eat your heart out KTM and Harley-Davidson!!! 🏍🇨🇦

The treaty of Versailles prevented BMW from continuing to manufacture aero engines, which is why they turned to auto engines and bikes. The treaty of versailles also arguably lead to the rise of Hilter, due to hyperinflation in Germany caused by the harsh terms of the reparations Germany had to pay following WWI, which were agreed at Versailles. You're welcome.
I'll stick to my Versys 650, tyvm. :P It may not have on-the-fly adjustable suspension or 3 levels of traction control or manual ABS control or cruise control or whatever else, but that's a lot of things that can go wrong that I don't have to worry about. :D
GS still the best all rounder, I looked close at KTM but found wanting in true adventure specs, first disappointed with tank ranges even on top Dakar models, KTM seem to have forgotten basics for an adventure bike or opted for economical production costs. BMWs F800adventure leads all other so called adventure bikes in its wake, it does come at a cost but so do all premium products.
I briefly had a F800GSA which i loved. However because of my ducks disease it didnt work for me. I swaped it out for a 1996 R100GS PD Classic. Couldnt be happier. Ps. Happy to be rid of the chain.
I have three generations of BMWs in the garage. Also as a sidecar. Each of them is fun in its own way. . . By the way, spare parts even for the /5 are not really an issue. . .
I've brought a Urban GS in honour of the history, I want to expand my horizons and its based on the R80 G/S that Helge rode around the world on. I want to do the same but 1 month trip somewhere new every year to get started
we own a 2007 low mileage 1200gs, been round europe twice two up fully loaded, unbelievable machine. I have also owned a triumph tiger 1050, suzuki vstrom 1000 and have recently tested the new Triumph adventurer 1200 shaft drive and nothing comes close to the bmw 1200gs. The f800gs is wicked too.
2013-2015 GSs are one of the last of the exceptionally reliable versions. 2016s on up are the years having serious issues. I have a 2015 that rolled over 22.5k miles this week, and I haven't had a single problem pop up.

How about a fact they used slave labor during ww2. Not to mention the same type of bike was used to wreck Europe during ww2 and the murky history of bmw owners the Quandt family. BMW history is a horror story.
Ross Moore - I would dare say any adventure bike 1000cc and up is more a touring bike than adventure bike regardless of how it is configured or marketed. When the engines get too big they become untenable for true adventure/off road use. If you can't easily pick the bike up on your own after you lay it down how useful is it really as an adventure bike? I did a cross Canada adventure tour with my father, an uncle and 2 of my cousins a few years ago. We have all ridden bikes since childhood and have a lot of off road/enduro experience. I rode a KLR 650, for which I took a good bit of ribbing before we left as I bought the smallest/cheapest bike by far. One of my cousins came out in Africa Twin (1000cc) and the rest were on R1200GS's. The rest of the pack had had their bikes for some time, whereas I bout the KLR just for this trip and sold it straight after as I don't have much use for a road bike this size (I have a 350 dual sport and a 250 trail bike). What I can say at the end of the trip is that running a bike that was ~160 pounds lighter, with more of a dirt orientation made the trip more fun. I threw an aftermarket, cushy seat on the KLR, which made highway driving quite comfy. When we got into any loose, bumpy or really wet stuff (which was often) the KLR breezed through everything. The smaller, simpler bike also proved to require much less maintenance and fiddling that the BMWs. When we stopped in places with true trail riding terrain, I could strip off the panniers and do a proper trail ride down single track whereas my mates had to wait to take turns on my bike. My dad, who is a big dude, sold his 1200 when he got back and picked up a XR650 which is what he does all his adventure biking on now.
My 1150 gs is turning 21 years old with 150 000 km. Clutch and gear box renewed (getrag didn't do great at that time... ) . Some bearings. But not much. Great bike

A factory has different priorities at different times. BMW have apparently decided to not spend a ton of $ or Euros on the PD rally...KTM have. So who has the best $100k bike and $millions team? These days it's KTM. This does not reflect what you can buy off the showroom floor. Also - too many sad stories about KTM's dealers/distributors not standing behind their warranty.

We got our Paralever 80 in 1991, at 3 years old. I still have her and she is just getting a new exhaust. Otherwise still going strong.
