BIG 3D Printed T-Rex Skeleton

- Today's project is probably my favourite one of all time! By using 3d printers I made all the pieces for a huge t-rex skeleton. By only using some paint and dirt I was able to get the parts to look more realistic. Once assembled it measured 1.6m in length, but only 2kg of plastic was used to make it. With a 3d printer for less than $200 and filament worth $50 this beast was created.

That was awesome plees more dinosaurus 3D printed skeletons maybi from brahiosaurus just maybi
That smooth frame rate and the lighting and the witherd look makes it so pro like. Im stunned
I love how you weathered it!
3D Printing Nerd Oh that's cool you watch RC life on too
The affiliate marketing 3D printing scene is minuscule so it's not a surprise.
time for Joel to make a life sized one
Hi five!
Get out of here Joel
I love this one! The quality and the paint makes it look so real!!
That looks fantastic. I love the straightforward way in which you aged the bones. Nothing like good, authentic dirt when you need something to look old and dirty.
Now a life sized one
wow this was dope,, especially how you found a process to age the bones to make it look like its right from the dig site
I wonder if anyone has ever tried 3D printing a whole lifesize T.rex skull. That would be something else. Great video by the way, love the model.
Somebody did try 3d printing a Life sized t rex skull
the dirt technique definitely makes the piece stand out. Great work
You are setting the bar very high for 3D printing videos now with such excellent work as this. Just amazing. thank you!
Now go burry the bones in your elementary school playground and watch the local news explode!
THAT IS LITERALLY THE BEST IDEA EVER!!
@@galx3573 DONE! :D
URGENT NEWS: case of dwarfism has been discovered to have effected the great Tyrannosaurus rex as discovered in the local school playground. Front page after 1 day 😂
All killer, no filler... maybe your best project. You set the bar high
I've found that the best way to achieve an accurate weathering effect on white plastic is to use real mud then use a clear coat to seal it and rough it up with some coarse grit sandpaper. Great videos and your Ender 3 Review really influenced my decision to make it my first 3D Printer!
Awesome build. The aging effect worked out great.
I have a 3D printed T-Rex Skull waiting to be painted. This is EXACTLY what I needed.
I just finished the t-Rex model, original size. I started the stegosaurus.. I think I’ll dirty up my models too. That looks great. Wish I had room to scale them up too.
Great job on the weathering!
I am actually printing the skull right now on my Maker select Plus so these tips are perfect. Yours is my favorite 3D printing RUclips channel!
Very nice! Besides the pronation of the hands, really cool looking.
Incredible. This goes in the top prints.
Fantastic gob once again Simon, that really turned out amazing! Can't wait to see what else you've got in store! 👍👍
that weathering technique turned out amazing! Especially considering the comparatively low effort involved! Effective af
The Piltdown Lizard. She's a beauty.
WOW after I have seen alot of your videos I want to start 3D printing and drive my RC rustler again.
You did a wonderful job with this and 100 hours is crazy and not something I would attempt with the power here.
Okay, now that's cool. Another project that would be fun to try.
That has got to be the best-looking print ive ever seen in my life!
I always wanted to print my own skeletons with glow in the dark filament but since it costs too much , I started collecting miniature versions of them from around the world from smugglers or small toy stores . These things look really fancy in the display case .
That’s so roarsome, it’s on my list to make.👍
Spectacular print and finish!
While I find all your videos great, inspiring and educational, this project is definitely on my list as a top favorite.
Looks great! Hanging like you have it will turn some heads as visitors walk in. This could have be a great sponsor video for Jurassic World.
Time to get printing one of those! Awesome video
Great job!!! I've been on the fence about committing to printing an upscaled version of this. You have sold me!! Thanks for the video!
Joel needs to print this in life size xD
3d printing nerd we need a hero
Awesome print. ..100 hours. impressive. Like the way it turned out. Bury those failed prints somewhere! I'm sure you could find a museum that would like that thing. Or create your own museum.
Just got a printer and my first big project will be the T-Rex. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.. all the best!!
Wow great job man. Lotta creativity there.
one of your best videos and most fantastic projects
Imagine 30 years from now you could have a velociraptor robot as a pet
Pretty Much everything Simon Makes turns out amazing!!!!
That's awesome. Amazing work. Now a full size T8000 😎
I'm currently about 40% through printing this, so far so good ! I am finding that a lot of the parts need supports though, which is making the print a lot long. I'm doing mine at 210% - Thanks for the great video!
Dude, you stepped up your painting/weathering skills on this one. This build looks great!!!!
Trop beau ton squelette! J'espère que je vais pouvoir en faire un aussi beau.....
You have done it again Simon, awesome man
thats really nice i have he same one hanging from my ceiling two weeks worth of printing and it took four rolls
Whoa! Great editing and awesome skeleton
Looks absolutely fantastic!
Impressive. I deeply regret not weathering my T-rex more and more now.
you are quite an artist
This is WHOA dude what a awesome work!
I want it.. It's so good.. I mean If I saw this at a store I would pick it up in a heart beat ..
Great video, and well printed t-Rex
Pat on the back, good job
2:02 Pencil?
"pensel" meaning "brush" :)
In swedish we call a brush ”pensel” so i kinda get why he Said so..
In Dutch we have "Penseel" and I believe German has "Pinsel". Funny how close those languages are even though they do sound very different (at least to me).
Oh, thanks for the clarifications
Can confirm it is Pinsel in German. So we all agree RCLifeOn said it correctly just the English language is being wrong! :p
This is actually so cool
Lol he called the brush a pencil! Just thought it was funny! Great video, absolutely awesome!
That looks seriously realistic! Good job!
Wow ! Really impressive !
The best print i ve never seen 😍
i'm french and i love your video!!!!!!
Great model, well done
Cool, great job. There may be a faster way to weather light colored PLA: buy some Potassium permanganate crystals (not a lot, 3 grams will be more than enough for couple of skeletons ), dissolve some in a bucket and put PLA parts in it. In 12 hours - couple of days depending on concentration they will be brown with natural shading, like something from the bog. Rinse, dry and mount. Keep longer for blacker finish. Theoretically it is possible to get them almost black but never tried it. With bucket large enough you can do the whole skeleton in one go.
The only drawback of the method is necessity to keep surface grease-free: any glue patch of greasy fingerprint will show as light patch. And remember to check the parts and steer the solution to keep it uniform. Also depending on printing settings and PLA brand it may highlight steps and gaps between layers, so try it on one printed part first.
May also work on resin casts.
Definitely works great on bone, leather and horn, cause it the same process which colors them in bogs, only greatly accelerated
Where does one buy Potassium permanganate crystals?
Great video, your filming just keeps getting better.
4:03 is awesome
Hey! Your hard work certainly shows with this cool project. Very nice. Thx.
Det se väldig bra ut. Absolut perfekt jobbat , hälsning Andreas
What a great build 👍
What an awesome T- Rex 👍👍
Should have set up a dip tank for the parts. Great model!
dude you are amazing. I'm glad that I have found your channel
It is looking so real
That reveal was straight otta Jurrasic park
SHIIITTT that print looks amazing!
What a awesome project. That is very groovy indeed! 1.75mm groovy.
Ok, next is to make one that has hollowed out key pivot locations to install the hydraulics. Steppers and servos are too loud and mechanical sounding in motion. Yes, make a dino version of what Boston Dynamics does with its mobilized robo dog structures! It's a decorative addon for the treadmill at least, that can mow the yard, play drums or bass etc. Cool band idea to sell lots of concert tickets ETA: 7 weeks. Go!
You are so talented!
I found your channel while hunting for ways to color 3D printed bones. Coincidentally I just finished printing my own T-Rex using the same model you used. I scaled mine 170% which was the largest I could do on the Makerbot Replicator 2. I had to stop one print early to cut the assembly pin short. I figured on using Super Glue. Great video! Liked and subscribed.
Gosh it looks so realistic
This thing looks legit, love your videos.
That came out really well. One of my 1st large prints was this T-Rex head, I printed it huge like 400% in hatchbox gray came out so good. Thanks for the video!
Wow 👌 that's an awesome print and nice job 😎
You did really Great job.
