  • Black Beyond America is a docu-series that speaks to people throughout the African Diaspora.
In this video, we speak to a handful of Afro Latinos. Whether talking about their upbringing, how non black Latinos address them or the controversy surrounding Amara La Negra, they remind us that being Black and Latino is neither rare nor mutually exclusive.

I’ve always received the Spanish test. Since i don’t speak Spanish some Hispanics dont accept me as Hispanic even though my dad was Mexican American. Once a Mexican American guy asked me why my dad didnt teach me Spanish. I told him that per my dad we were going to have enough issues with racists just with our being black and Mexican. He was right. to some Hispanic people,, it’s not possible for a Mexican American man and an African American woman could possibly be married for 25 years and have 4 kids. These folks are all telling the truth. I’ve been through all of that.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California but when I was 20 I moved to Costa Rica for a year to improve my Spanish / gain fluency. I loved the culture so much I felt at home and extended my stay.
I feel Latin America deeply and people are often pleasantly surprised when I'm speaking Spanish now that I'm back in the US.
Even when in CR, people assumed I was from Limón, on the Caribbean side.
Before visiting, I had very little idea that Black people really were all over this world. ❤️

Although I’m not Afro-Latinx, I really identified with what the beautiful chocolate sister with curls said because growing up in the African-American community I always got the what “are you mixed” or you can’t be just Black or African descent from my own people due to my hair being long and the curl pattern. It’s degrading towards my African heritage because it implies that is less than and anything else in my bloodline is beautiful when in reality the non-Black blood is present from rape. My people are starting to realize statements that reek of Anti-Blackness is unacceptable, but there’s still more work to be done in fixing our mentalities.

The school never discuss slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean. You find blacks from Colombia,Panama ,Ecuador,Peru,Bolivia, Puerto Rico,Dominican Republic,Cuba outside Havana. There is small section of Buenos Aires in Argentina where black people live. Uruguay there is a small section not far from Montevideo. Where black people live. Paraguay have a small Black Population outside Asuncion. The slave trade started in Santa Marta in Cartagena ,Colombia and Panama. Latinos should talk about racism, colorism many years ago.

You all are beautiful and I love each of your cultures! In America things go in categories. They need things to be in nice neat little boxes so it makes it easier for them to identify. That's what they did with the Indians (Native Americans) they didn't care that they were of "different tribes" So, long story short, with no more confusion. Over here? your Black. When someone gets to know you, there the disrinction can be made and they can see that your more than your skin color. But again, for the sake of time and also nobody really giving a shit about this subject really, you're Black. So, you know, be ok with that. Love to all

I don't think most people know how and why Latino and Africa cultures are so intertwined. How caste systems are used to keep people separated and under control. We have been taught "his story" but we don't really know world history. Why don't we know most of Columbus's crew were marranos (Black Moorish Jews of Maghrib, Sudan and Iberian Pennisula: the Marranos) and that all had Latino sir names but were Afro Latinos. Check out "Columbus" and his Negro friends". Peace and blessing to all, familia 🙏

I am sure people know that Africans were not only brought to America. People like to talk about racism in America BUT, white Latinos are racist against the black Latinos, and many of the black Latinos & Latinas won't accept that they are black. No matter what part of the world you come from. If you look like any of the people in this video, then you are black. We may all come from different cultures but the bottom line is our ancestors are African. I am American of Caribbean decent, and I applaud each one of these people for acknowledging that they are black.

@@noreenperez8666 I see the problem as most Latinos only want to be black when it's convenient. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter what language you speak or what port your ancestors where dragged to; the only thing that matter is your skin tone and/or your hair texture that defines how black you are. You can be mixed all you want but if you look blackish your black.
