Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger did a pre-soundcheck hang with Isaiah Mitchell and Mike Eginton of Earthless. Check out how both Mitchell and Eginton conjured up earthy, yet cosmic, tones with minimal gear.
Isaiah Mitchell’s No. 1 is this well-worn Fender Stratocaster that he bought in high school from a friend’s dad. The body parts are impossible to identify by this point, but this loved and abused Franken-Strat has a medium-soft “V” neck (that could be from a ’55), Brierley Pickups, and a Callahan tremolo system. The strat is strung with Jim Dunlop .010-.046 nickel wound strings and played with Jim Dunlop Tortex .88 mm picks.
Mike Eginton tours with his 1970 Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass, strung with D’Addario flatwound strings and played with Dunlop .88 mm nylon picks.

Isaiah is truly one of the greatest guitar players that has ever lived in my honest opinion. Every time I hit a wall and don’t feel like playing guitar much, I listen to Earthless and it completely rekindles my entire love of the instrument. The first time I heard this band, I couldn’t believe what my ears were hearing. It was Sonic Prayer, I’ll never forget it. It’s criminal how underrated of a guitar player he is. And Earthless as a whole! God bless this man and his inspiration.
He's got it so bad! One of my favourit guitarplayers
This comment!
Uh, ROFL
Dude same
It was Uluru rock for me.
Mike doesn't get enough love. He's such a good powerful bass player. Him and Mario build the amazing canvas that makes everything work.
I went to an Earthless show in 2009 because I had confused them with a (mediocre) prog metal band called Opposite Earth. When I realised, I was disappointed, but not for long! They started playing and I remember thinking "So when is he gonna start singing?" Then I thought "This is great and I wanna do what he's doing!". Shortly after I bought my first guitar.
Last Friday they played in my town. I missed the show because I had to prepare for a gig I played the next day... in some sense "doing what he's doing" so I wasn't too disappointed, really :P
Damm now thats a cool story ✌🎸👍
Embracing your passion - that's the way to live:)
I also saw them around that time ! Probably a year prior .The set was pretty much Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky and that's my favorite record by them (even though it kinda sounds like a jam session,I still love it)
Earthless always earlyalbums are the best
He definitely makes playing guitar look like anyone can do it
Isaiah truly plays the guitar, his control over his instrument is stunning.
The way guitar players talk about tone is one of the most amusing things to me.
I know this is an old comment, but i have to know what's amusing about it? I'm a guitar player and I try not to talk about my own tone too much - it's odd when people want to hear us talk about it.
Isaiah is hands down one of the best players out there now. Been lucky enough to see Earthless several times....they crush every time
John, you do such a great job interviewing these artists. Thank you so much. I really like how you ask great questions and let them do almost all of the explanation. Keeping chatter to a minimum and letting them explain their gear and why THEY like it. You and others at Premier are a knowledgeable team and really appreciate your work. THANKS!!!
Hits a chord , big crunch tone "that's my clean." Hahaha.
Yeah, I Agree. I was like: " THAT . . . is Not Clean "
Welcome to Stoner/psych rock
haha this happened with Matt Pike on his rig rundown too
Crunch? Seemed like a Fuzz to me lmao
What a diff with the Tele
I saw Earthless at GroundZero SC back in 2017 ish and have been rocking with them ever since. Isaiah Mitchell is a picker that I never get tired of. Keep on rocking! \m/
Been listening to rock and guitar stuff for 50 years and just learned of this guy yesterday. I agree with all the superlatives used.
Awesome, Isaiah seems like such a cool guy, and is killer guitar player, glad Earthless is back!
Nerd guitar player here. You can combine pickups in either series or parallel depending on how they are wired. You can also split the coils of a humbucker. Sounds like you are talking about parallel. You can also flip the + and -, which is polarity, and because the pickups are in different physical locations, the phase of the pickups will be different and some frequencies will cancel and some will add, which changes the tonal qualities.
Love the Bad Brains and Tym Guitars stickers on the back of the strat!
I grew up with him. I remember him in punk bands in Leucadia. From there Earthless and now the Crowes. Freaking amazing.
Great show, with some really fantastic groups, I have to admit that alot of the band's I've never heard of.... This show has brought an array of great musicians to my attention! Band's like, AFI, Screaming Females (brilliant singer & guitarist) & many others! But, these 2 Band's really stand out for me! Keep up the great work....☝🤓👍
I have been listening to Earthless fir years! Sick band. Top 3 guitarist of all time. Dude has some unreal chops and guitars, amps, etc...
Mitchell's tone is so effing nasty. He's also one of the greatest living guitarists.
One of my favorite guitarists. Just recently became aware of him. So good
GREAT TONES GREAT RIG RUNDOWN!!! BEST OF THE YEAR SO FAR!!!!!
Can't say enough good things about this band and how great they sound live. Legends!
Picked up my guitar from Tyms today. Alex fitted the Isaiah Mitchell Brierley hand wound pups ... What a shop. What talent. What a sound!
Steve Randall awesome man!
Short bassist with a shortscale and a mini bass wah, but MASSIVE tone! ❤️
AWESOME interview, this group is really dedicated to the classics sounds of ROCK, I'm so glad you brought attention to their style of play and technical side of Effects, keep up the good work Buddy
Love Rig Rundown that shows player playing. Awesome episode!
these guys are doing really great music i love it, glad they are visiting ireland this year, will see them in May 2022. cheers
there is pure gold here
Great to see Earthless on the Rig Rundown. Trippy fuzzed out psychedelic warriors.
it caught my attention, that's for sure. not enough people know this band.
I'm not even an Earthless fan, but I loved every second of this.
I’m a new fan you should check em out pretty good stuff
YEAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you PG and johnny b.!
That tele sounds awesome
Best Rundown I’ve seen yet. Great stuff!
Awesome John! Always a treat brother.
Got to meet this dude awhile back. Super cool cat. Earthless is sick! One of my all time favorite bands. See them live.
That was The bass sound from “Check Your Head”! Sweet!!!
saw them 3 yrs. ago ,I think, at a St. Paddy's day gig. great rock band who play an amalgam of every band they like (and I like).closed w/ a song containing lyrics (an instrumental band),'Communication Breakdown'. great show on a really cold, windy night in Harvard Sq .I can understand someone starting a band because of them.good, down to earth guys(no pun) who hung around talking afterwards .nobody rushed to go outside .nobody sober, anyway. he played the shit out of that old Strat.
Great Rig Rundown, this band is awesome!
plus one for Brierley Pickups - absolute works of art. I have a P90 in a les paul an my fave: an esquire in an esquire I put together, gorgeous tones
Yew!! Tym’s!! I go into Tym’s and drool regularly.
That tele is rocking boy!
Such an awesome player. Hell yeah.
Most relevant Rig Rundown to my sound. Love the gear!
swell as my band
Isaiah, seems to do one of the best jobs showcasing tone in his choice of notes, and phrasing. Impressive!
Awesome rundown John! Killer tones! thank-you.
New game: One whisky sip for each time Isaiah says "I dunno"
Drunk in seconds XD
Love this guy and his gear!
The man is a monster! Love Earthless! Amazing music - brilliant guitar!
That treble boost is freaking wild sounding!
Wgs, warehouse guitar speakers, are amazing!! I have a 2x12 with a retro 30 and a HM75 and the combo is amazing! They have some of the best quality and there price is really resonable
Earthless is amazing. If you are here and don't have their music, get some!
“Negative times negative is positive” “stand and deliver” 🤣😂
24:56 Dude sneaking a beer! Lol. I will put it in this bag so nobody can see me take it! Lol. Then I will crouch when I walk away! Lol. Nobody can see me when I crouch! Hahaha!! I AM CRABMAN! My super power is I get invisible when I do the crab walk! Hahaha!
I think its more of an elder scrolls thing
7:20 dont touch my fkn guitar
so elegant playin´and amazing sound...cool
Arby's pedal rules! It's made by our bud Ned Clayton. We love our Arby's pedals.
Mick Brierley makes great pick-ups!! He lives in my home city of Adelaide, in South Australia.
Best wineries (esp. Shiraz & other reds) anywhere, too ... X)
Killer gear hey... same this end!
Yes! Got a couple of his PAF's in my LP.
Love the look of his strat! Interesting sound, very rounded. The pedal board kind of works with that, lots of subtle different mid tone flavours which he really works in his playing of course.
Yeaaahhhh finally Isaiah doing this !
My new fave band.
Super nice interview! Really cool guys.
Isaiah is really a much more versatile player than I realized.
Nice work John. It's a beautiful thing to see two grown men ogling and growning over pedals together like that.
The only strat I ever heard do all this! Wow
Nice! Saw Earthless at Lake on Fire Festival last summer, amazing show! Always asked myself what fx they use. Just realized there's this rig rundown, well, better late than never^^
cool pedals,,learned alot of new names..this dude rocks
That is an amazing guitar! I have always wabted a 54'(maybe)? Got it off a buddies dad, what a great story!
That strat is beautiful.
Great that he bought that Strat in high school and put it back to stock...
Hey pits, nice interview. I'm gonna have to check out this band for sure.
Great band!
What sick guitars. The triple bridge tele is so tight. Also what a clean tone hahaha
FINALLY THANK YOU!
I like how they're wearing almost the same shirt haha. And damn he has some epic chops!
dang that sounds great
Honestly I didn't know strats with single coils can sound so damn heavy!!! Hell I could play sludge with his setup! Killer tone!
You should listen to some Dead Meadow or Mt. Carmel. I thought the same thing.
Ditch Walkin I’ll check em out, thanks!
Ya know... I'm thinking Telecaster not strat. Still good bands though. Sorry
@@dbdbprairie3804 listen to baroness they both play teles
Captain Beyond too
Tyms guitar sticker on the back , rad
Every time somebody plays a shorter scale bass people comment on how “huge” they sound like they are surprised. Shorter scale means less string tension which means bigger deeper sound, same concept as d-tuning lol
Except with detuning you're also...de..tuning. so the notes are actually lower. Short scale basses sound more rubbery and loose for sure.
Bad Brains sticker on the back otherwise it doesn't work.
Noedig it’s just a sticker
I don't know this band but Isaiah Mitchell's tone is fabulous from that Tele!
Isaiah is an amazing player - had the pleasure of shooting his other band Golden Void a few months ago and it was incredible to enjoy his playing close up. Inspiring stuff and a really nice guy.
'Shooting' is a photography term for taking photographs...LOL
Sure...sure...
Seaweed Pedal! That is fantastic.
Got to see them on this tour in Boston - very far out 🌀
honestly if you're getting a bigsby you can afford the extra 30 bucks for all the callaham upgrades. They make great trems.
Huh! This is one of those rare times I'm actually going to bother looking up the RR band I've never heard before! :D
Their latest rips ass, but check out From The Ages as well.
Echodrive! Those SIB pedals are super cool. My friend has a blue Echodrive that's one of the best sounding delays I've ever heard. Good luck finding one lol.
wow.. How does he get such a big dark sound on the bridge pick up on a strat? Is the tone wired to it like Beck? Thx
hell yea!!!
I have a Texas Ranger, and it's awesome.
Callaham probably won't mind the typo... Anyway, I love my WGS Blackhawk in my AC15!
Epic
Great job fellas. What was the strap lock?
27:45 John getting ready to toss Mike like a doll.
dude that bassist is so calm
Wow. Fingerpicks…amazing. He must have callouses of steel
I'd be good if you can do a Blossom rig rundown :)
13:00 Okay, clearly I need a treble booster.
sounded way better when he changed the treble booster from full range to its original intent 13:45.
A civil war era Big Muff? That I want to hear!
Caught them last night in Barcelona. He's still playing that same strat and killing it. I'm wondering if the body was from a strat plus? Lace sensors, "graphite" nut (strat plus is powdered steel but it could be confused with graphite)...... Hhmmm 🤔
That first guitar strap on the strat is sick! Anyone knows who made it?
Everyone needs a Strat/Tele that you'd be happy to drag behind your motorbike for a few miles and then plug into a fuzz pedal and go nuts
look at there perfectly faded denim. what brand? can we have a wardrobe rundown for John
