‘59 thru ‘63 my dorm was Giles and a short walk next door was my oasis of calm and serenity. Upstairs curled up in a chair by the window I read and relaxed. I so often transport myself back to those idyllic days.

Lilly was my go to study space when I lived on East when it was the Duke Women’s college in the early and mid sixties when our class schedules were much fuller than those today. There WAS no other quiet space outside the hustle- bustle of dorm life except for the occasionally open but empty classroom in the evening! I am thrilled East Campus (Lilly) library is getting such much needed attention!

Are we sure the class schedules back then were any more or less difficult?

@2:50. The purpose of a library. Well said.

I went to Duke in the early 90s and preferred to study at Lilly (when it was East Campus Library). It was such an important oasis. I look forward to the renovations but hope it retains that same sense of comfort.

Me too. I loved that it was so intimate, soft and cozy. With lots of small nooks to escape and think.

The Chinese-themed reading room upstairs inspired serious study.
