In my opinion the scariest thing about horror games is the fact they're all dark - means I have to see my reflection the entire time. And that's way worse than the goblin.
I've been doing a lot of research on what makes horror games scary, since I'm making a horror game myself, and here's what I have so far: - Immersive atmosphere (not scary on its own, but pretty much vital for the other things to work) - The sense of isolation (same as above) - Unpredictability - Lack of visual/auditorial information, or things that mess with your perseprion of them (think fog and darkness from Amnesia, or the fan sound from FNAF) - High stakes (both gameplay-wise and story-wise) - People's own imagination (the secret to using it is showing the player just a few clues on what is to come, but not enough to connect the dots) (this is where environmental storytelling shines) - Uncanny Valley (not necessary, but can help A LOT since many people are extremely susceptible to it) (side note: FNAF is one of the few examples that uses audio uncanny valley, and not just the visual one) - Jumpscares (only if used very sparingly. Jumpscares are basically a way to trade the built up tension for immediate fear, so the best time to use them is when the tension is no longer needed, such as the end of the game) - Claustrophobic level design (adding lots of turns, corners and dead ends helps too) - Save points (for contrust) (never ever attack the player in those. Save points should feel safe till the very end) - Scarcity of resources (helps with high stakes) And then there are more story-related types of Horror. Existential horror (think SOMA), Cosmic horror (think Lovecraft), Guilt horror (think Undertale), Psychological horror (Think Amnesia or Fallout), Mascot horror (Think Spooky's jumpscare mansion or Doki Doki literature club)
Up at 230 am and just found your videos. The hamster part made me almost cackle. So your videos are terrible for insomnia. I think that’s a compliment!

I love watching video essays about horror games because I'm way too much of a weenie to ever play one, but I do think they're very cool

The original resident evil nemesis was terrifying popping out of nowhere at every turn
Kinda wanna play a horror game now (then turn it off and play more fall guys)
RIP Big Steve. I hope through your grief you found the area under that function.
I sleep like golden Freddy
I have such a low tolerance for horror games. That’s why I avoid family dinners.
Victor jumpscare omg

Have you ever played Outer Wilds Echoes of the Eye? That, in my opinion, is by far the scariest game i've ever played.
