Lowkey this soundtrack is a secret weapon for me as a DJ whenver I play gigs. Sometimes if I wanna pull out some unknown bangers I pull up this soundtrack and watch the crowd go nuts.
I found it puzzling that, a year later; the developers decided to choose Gina as the mascot for RRDS (a DS port or a "remake" of RR64, also replacing Reiko from that game), that's how I later knew about this game where the character was in this RR spin-off that didn't perform well.
Sadly true. Sigh. It was so weird to see the character / mascot change. Tis a sad day, Reiko was let go. It was a sad day. I am not sure what they saw in Gina to replace the classic character after so many years. And sadly yeah R: Racing Evolution did not do well in sales.
apparently ridge racer 64 and ridge racer ds were made by a development team at nintendo of america not sure how much involvement namco had in those games maybe someone at nintendo of america liked gina over reiko
2:46 This meter has an actual name. The sBinalla meter. And it is incredibly realistic. Whenever a specific red car is being hunted down by a specific silver or blue car, if they stay close enough, the red car will blunder. In fact, it is a mechanic not only for the drivers, but also for the pit crew and strategists as well. More games should use the sBinalla meter more often.
Haven't played any Ridge Racer games but I like the Euromix soundtrack to these games. It was certainly a popular series back on the original PlayStation.
I think the gripe with the 'tension meter' is missing the point of these games. Sure, it's a sim racer, but it's a video game before it's a sim racer, meaning there will inevitably be mechanics to make the game fun rather than realistic, and there isn't inherently anything wrong with that, ESPECIALLY for the time it came out (2003). I wouldn't expect any 2003 game to be realistic, whether its a simulator or not. It's certainly not a perfect game, but it was evidently made for a certain audience and that audience absolutely adores it.
This was a pretty good summary. This could be a good niche for you, just candidly reviewing some fairly obscure games that you have a history with. And even before you said it, I was vibing with the music.
Nice review, I liked it a lot. I don't think the game is weird (in some aspects it is) but I just think the game needed some ironing out, I wish they did make a sequel but since people at the time thought was just another racing game that just exists. Also, the soundtrack is what modern-day racers wish it had.
I actually owned it back in the day for the OG Xbox. I loved it cuz it was totally different. It was from Namco and had a story line. Also if your gonna show RR show the OG version from PS1 days as that was super ground breaking back in the day.
Ever since I’ve been visiting back to this game since I was a kid, it’s been a lot of fun. I don’t actually feel that it’s completely “weird” in my opinion.
I should've specified that I believe that this game kinda suffers from tonal dissonance. The game is trying to discuss topical things in Motorsport, and yet there are cutscenes and other aspects that aren't trying to be serious.
Mostly just came here to comment on the baffling idea that this OST is "J-Pop" (an incoherent thing to begin with since there's no unified sound to pop music across the ages or countries) this OST mixes Eurodance with DnB and Techno.
this is one of my favorite GameCube games and actually helped me learn and fall in love with racing sim games. The soundtrack was full of bangers and while the story was nothing special and not very engaging and weird, i always assumed it was because it was a Japan based game and some elements were lost in translation. I mean FZeroGX wasn’t anything special story wise but the gameplay and soundtrack were iconic, just like RRacing E. Your take is also 20 years too late and back then it was a step away from Arcady feeling racing games and a nice middle ground that was somewhere not quite as intense as Gran Turismo.
Brings back memories! As a GameCube owner this was the only semi realistic racer for the console. I kinda liked it, the story mode was a bit redundant, and that tension meter was laughably over simplified however I think with a little polish this could have been a great title. Shame it was all a bit half arsed.
Literally remembered this game and came looking today because of the intro song....especially the ending. As for the review.... Spin out on understeer? You started to lose it on an oversteer in your video. Anyway from what I remember the driving was cool. Don't remember if I rented it or what but it was a cool game. My memories of it are overshadowed by the first two Burnouts and Forzas.
Oh trust me I'm not happy with any of my gameplay here, I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about. I'm very upset with this video in retrospect. Though for some reason people keep coming to it...there's so many incorrect terminology in here that it's insulting
Thank You for this video! I was really hoping for another Ridge Racer game but NAMCO making a racer with real cars female drivers peaked my interest I played this game many times over because I loved the music, sound effects etc but I couldn't help to see that this game could've been soo much better with the story even R-4 had a more engaging story mode If NAMCO did a RR game with female drivers that would've been AWESOME!! but you're right, not many gamers showed interest in this game but I'm a die-hard race fan that still has love for this game! Again Thank You so much for this video👍🌟❤😁💃
Namco usually give up on their racing franchises easily, and that's a big set back, they should try to make them better, R: racing Evo, should have pt2 and be more realistic, R.R unbound, yes i like it but it needs to keep going with better improvement, and finally the world favorite The Ridge Racer series should never died, we all love it, just as how the a keeping Tekken alive, they need to keep Ridge Racer and Soul Calibur alive too, but with improvement as time goes,
The dev team was experimenting with display settings. Depending on the console you are playing this game on, it would work with standard or widescreen. But it was not fully ready on release. I believe it is backwards compatible with Xbox One, and Series X. Which gives it a bump in display.
Got this on the GameCube back in the day as a gift and liked it. It was the only realistic racing game I ever had till I tried the Forza series. And the only thing I remember about is the intro and the two chicks with their breasts out

same here, that meter makes absolute sense.
I saw boobs on Raycevick's video "I Love Racing Games, They Suck!" and searched R Racing.
You watch him too.
