- In this episode of the Parker's Pensées Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Sanford Goldberg to discuss his work on Hilary Putnam's reply to the brain-in-a-vat skeptical scenario. We discuss the idea that meaning just ain't in the head, i.e. content or semantic externalism, and much more. This was a really fascinating one and I hope to have many more conversations with Dr. Goldberg as he has thoughts on so many things!

Bro, this is lit! 🔥 I love when you upload epistemological stuff!
Love this topic it is so much fun to think about and I am going to listen to this one several times. Keep up the good work my friend.
I just woke up from a very vivid dream. I (or I overwatched someone ) was speaking to a Bishop in a cathedral and it was explained that I was trying to change my world with my mind and he said in response "It's working. A perfect example of externalism"
I've never heard of this phrase before in my life. It's really stuck with me and I'm compelled to look it up hence why I'm here! My dreams told me something I've never heard of from my own mind -which what in gathering is externalism in itself?
Host looks like an ascended master
Parker your channel is awesome.
I'm so pumped you like it!
@@ParkersPensees I'm hoping to emulate apologetic and christian philosphy channels like yours.
I just haven't had a lot of time to make videos or find guests due to school and work
@@ParkersPensees if you ever want to do a google chat one day, I'm down.
Theaetetus (Plato) and Dreaming of a Butterfly (Zhuangzi) are both ancient examples of a similar idea. Descartes' dream scenario and evil demon scenario followed. Putnam's BIV was much later. I think we moved away from dreams in these scenarios and towards BIV and simulations to avoid confusion related to empirical research around dreaming and keep the conversation focused on the philosophical points being made, but that's just an opinion.
This is gold. Thanks for those examples!
Louis Litt. awesome show!
@@-DexterMorgan- lol!
Love your channel, would love if you could invite Josh Rasmussen about his new book coming out about identity
Already have 💪💪
My brain (in a vat) feels stupid
Couldn’t what determines what the portrait is of be the intention of the painter? Imagine a painter is painting a portrait of a celebrity but uses a friend who looks similar as a model, while intentionally changing some features to make it look like the celebrity. Then, the portrait is of the celebrity, not because they were the one sitting for the portrait, but because of the painter’s intention. This scenario would seem to go against externalism.
What determines the intention of the painter? What's its content?
@@DarrenMcStravick I would think that actually doesn’t matter because I could do the same scenario but instead of a celebrity switch it with a character made up from the painter’s mind who he wants to look similar to the model.
@@Qhaon That just further begs the question of the originative content of the constituents you've broken down the artist's intentions into. If you haven't felt the argumentative force of the chinese room argument, you're going to continue to run into serious logical and metaphysical issues with your ideas of what makes language and more specifically, language acquisition, possible.
@@DarrenMcStravick so I haven’t looked into externalism or internalism enough to be married to either idea, but prima facie it still seems intuitive to me that the intention of the painter is what determines what the portrait is of. Without going to other thought experiments, could you explain to me why I’m begging the question?
Is this not in some sense the theme of The Matrix?
Yep, they got it from this thought experiment
Is a swamp creature the same thing as a philosophical zombie?
Not quite although I think they end up being the same. Many would disagree I think
