Honestly the guy recording handled the situation professionally. He called him out but still kept it civil and respectful. I’ve seen videos where people were freaking out about the other person doing stolen valor which I can understand if they were battle vets.
Years ago, I was in a play that had me wearing Army fatigues. I felt honored and unworthy to wear it. Putting on any military garment is no joke. it's definitely an honor, and I appreciate wholeheartedly to those who have served past present and future! God bless you all!
Saw an interview many years ago with Henry Fonda. He was discussing the film “Midway”, in which he played Admiral Nimitz. He talked about the lead actors wearing Navy uniforms as costumes. However, the film production used active duty sailors as extras. Fonda commented that the sailors didn’t see the actors as they were being driven around the base, but rather saw the uniforms and the rank and saluted accordingly. Fonda stated that he made a point of telling fellow cast members to return the salutes, even if they never served or weren’t in the Navy, because they needed to show respect to the active duty personnel who initiated those salutes. Henry Fonda served in the Navy during WWII.
If it’s just fatigues I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as like a dress uniform or a hat/patch that says “I served” I wear my tiger stripe fatigues a lot because they look good and they’re comfortable. It’s especially okay if there’s no division patches or unearned rank markings, and you’re not going around saying you served when you didn’t.

Man I completely agree with you. I was in the military myself but nowhere near 22 years. Thanks for your service. To me it seems ridiculous that we have US military personnel actively giving people who clearly have a mental disability a hard time about this. My Grandfather was in the Army Air Corps in WWII. I didn't confront this child with the facts, but my Brother in Law did. Chief Litigating Officer for a major pfharmaceutical company and tore into him like a Bear. Got respect from that boy afterward. I was born in the 1950's, served in the 1970's but look like I'm still in my 30's.
Had no idea this was a thing. My father in-law, who severed in Vietnam gave me an Army shirt. Wore it once. Threw it on while running to the store and didn't think twice about it. Guy asked where I served and felt like a total ass. Never worn again and will hang in my closet forever.

I believe in this concept so much that when somebody who's not a plumber says they're a plumber, I consider it stolen valor because I've had to work really hard to become what I am and I know what these guys go through and I know it's not at the same level. But I respect the concept so much that I put it into practice in my everyday life
I like the way you handled this, the guy knew what he was doing in that uniform and you gave him a good enough scare that he will hopefully never try this again.
Just my opinion but he would have asked if he wanted to see his CAC not his ID. And everybody I know who actually served always pull out their military ID first before their state ID just to see if they can get a military discount
There's no shame in the inability or the unwillingness to serve. It ain't for everyone. But, don't do this. This degrades the uniform, and the people who gave it all up so men like him didn't have to.
When dude said, "Do you want to see my ID?"... I was half expecting what all our servicemembers would have pulled out. That good old CAC card. I know that's what our service members would have pulled out because that's exactly what I've pulled out back when i served. I was once asked for my ID by an cop who pulled me over while i was heading to my duty station at the time and when asked i was half way through pulling my CAC and he said "No your civi ID" I stopped looked at what i was handing over and chuckled. We spoke for a bit, and he told me to slow down, coming off the hill i was on and sent me on my way. During that moment, I didn't recognize what he had said until I decided to tell this story here. The officer was letting me know he knew my mix-up and understood how i got confused for a moment there. My best guess is, looking back at that right now, he just gave off this aura that felt like my platoon leader at the time. He wasn't my Platoon SFC, but he had a feeling about him that made me just reach for that particular card at that given time. Never happened before or after, but hey, sometimes things just go that way because of one reason or another. If you've read this far, i apologize for such a story when the video is about this dudes wrongdoing. I just remembered that officer, and that moment, as I was thinking and typing about the CAC card.
