I AGREE! Halo CE is a clunky party game and it's so great at that, as you said just look at the CGB. However, as someone who is *very* competitive I think it's even better than for example Halo 2. Halo CE is broken dumb fun, but everyone can participate. Everyone gets a Magnum is what I'm getting at lol. I'll agree it's bad on objective modes, but CE slayer still shines as a competitive game within the realm of slayer and the party-style modes. In Halo 2, If you can't button combo then you'll almost never win a competitive game. In addition, I liked your point about how CE isn't still populated due to nostalgia. Combat Evolved is a game older than me so obviously I didn't experience the prime Halo days. HOWEVER, I can still come back and have fun in Halo CE's multiplayer. Needless to say, claiming nostalgia as CE's life support is ridiculous. All that said, Halo CE's multiplayer I'd argue is still a good experience even by today's gaming standards. Truly, this game is so bad that it's good
Kicking myself for not mentioning the bloody magnum!!! Although if I were to cry about all the so-bad-it’s-good things I might have passed the 10 min mark 😂 honestly you summarise exactly how I feel. It’s beyond nostalgia and simply put, actually great gaming from a great time period. I’ve played CE every night this week and haven’t touched infinite and just feel so good hopping around in custom lobbies
@@jeemojayAfter experiencing Halo 4, 5 and Infinite, I've come to this conclusion: Give the players a large sandbox, and let them figure out how to make it competitive. Don't try to force it on them via crazy tuning. Halo 3 was a great example of this imo. The weapons and equipment were kind of balanced, but not "spreadsheet balanced", if that makes sense. They were balanced to be fun, not balanced to be sweaty - I think the 343i Halos specifically have fallen into the "sweaty balance" side of the spectrum. idk. That's how I've come to see all of it haha
It's still the best party game ever made, the Custom edition is still played today after over 20 years. I miss the time when games were made to have fun and not to continue your progression system and to get better in pointless rankings. Games like CE or Republic Commando got it so perfect, you came back to have fun over and over again for so many years, no other game will ever get close to my play time in those games. Yeah, I had some good time in the competitive world of other games too, but even in those times, I always came back to the chill and fun games.
Amazing comment. Republic commando is right up there for me, I know some say the squad system may have lacked depth but it fit perfectly in the story and the weapons were equally as creative and sometimes OP, but in the right way just like Halo CE. So happy to see that game being mentioned! And agree CE is the best party game ever made. It’s always fun to see people pull out Mario kart at a party but I have my original Xbox now in the US for when people are over for CE and H2
@@jeemojay thanks =). And yeah the squad system in the campaign was simple, but it works perfect even when you're under stress of being pushed by many enemies and your squad mates definitely helped to kill them. If you compare that to Ghost Recon Wildlands for example - your squad mates there will rarely manage to protect you when you're busy, even when you send them to the perfect spot to hold the only way to you. But I also meant the multiplayer of Republic Commando, which was also a lot of fun and a bit like CE's just without the Vehicles, but with more insane weapons instead.
love it in Halo CE when you lose a vehicle and it takes 10 minutes to cross no mans land on foot. really makes puts the value of vehicles into perspective.
Halo CE multi is the only one of the older games that I go back to and play. It wasn't hyper balanced, and some maps were jank, but the fun was there. Starting with an all rounder pistol that felt great to use, the skill gap and expression with 3 shots, grenade jumps, grabbing weapons from afar using grenades... The CE pistol is just so satisfying to use man. Its on my list of top FPS weapons. I enjoyed most of the other Halos, even some of 343's, but they never felt as good as CE. It was just dialed in on the amount of auto-aim assist, the sandbox, skill gap, just perfect.
Totally with you. I love the magnum on pc, im guessing same with controller but if you tap it instead of hold its a fair stretch more accurate somehow so even for a 23 year old game it presents a cool mechanic. Everything you mention here just makes it top tier despite how a game like this might translate in today’s day and age. Awesome comment, so glad to see how many people love CE
@@jeemojay Yup, fun should always come first and I think a lot to modern devs let that get lost in the sauce. Nintendo's been pretty good maintaining that.
This is a great video. Halo CE was my first game I ever played. It was 2005, my dad turned on the Xbox and I just have vague memories of balancing on beams over an endless pit with him. I’m still playing Halo now. I feel like I’d be betraying the series by hating on it. I love every aspect of each game with how stupid each of them could be. The goofy community sure plays a big part in all this.
Awesome memory to share Trevor! So glad to see another person still playing. I’ve switched back to playing the halos after years of competitive gaming that I just don’t want anymore and CE never disappoints to give me fun every single evening. Goofy community for sure helps keep the fun alive 🥳
You know people will do anything when you see people jumping into warthogs with NO gunners so they can use themself as a battering ram in the enemy spawn room!!! And the option to put everything on the line to stop the enemy is present in so many ways in CE it’s awesome. So funny lol
It's funny, Halo 2 started my completive aspect of gaming... but Halo CE, on LAN parties with xbox's connected by a basic linxus switch, are my core gaming memories.
@@jeemojay some of our sleep overs as kids were "camp outs".... tents on the back porch, but a tv/xbox in 3 tents, with team in each tent.... was better than any online experience if I'm being honest.
Halo ce multiplayer wasn’t great but is considered to be one of the greats bc it helped lay the foundation for what is online gaming today in a shooter aspect granted technically not the first one ever I still think ce was a big help in the foundation for online shooters

To me, the older Halos didn't strive to be perfectly balanced, and that's what made it them great.
Hell yeah agree. Love how the anything goes mentality ended up working perfectly, I hope we can get even some aspects of that back moving forward
