  • Back in December, I caught the wade-fishing bug while standing in knee-deep water and subduing massive speckled trout in South Texas. A month later, my wife and I were hiking near our condo in Perdido, Fla., and came across a stunningly beautiful flat that was carpeted with shoal grass.
The timing and the temps weren't right for wade-fishing the flat at that time, but I filed the location away in my memory bank, and returned this weekend to see what I could catch.
Check out the video for all the details!

Boy brings back memories when we use to fish south of that area Gulf Breeze. Our son was stationed there in Navy and we vacationed every year, We all caught PB trout I became good friends with locals and learned all the spots. The best bonus was gag groupers and flounder. Go to Joe Petti Seafood dock was also a must best place ever for seafood. McQuires best place to eat also. Only draw back the traffic to and from Louisiana was always a major problem. We did learn some back ways to help but it is a pain.

Been lucky enough to have snagged two Bantam Curado baitcasters mated up to decent rods and one was snagged aboard Causeway Dave's boat about a shade over a year ago and the other was snagged jigging soft plastics along de Chalmette Wall. The Chalmette wall Curado sat in salty water a tad too long to be successfully resurrected, the other, snagged jigging the Causeway, was apparently lost overboard not too long before I luckily snagged it.I took that Curado apart and it works fine, just is not the Bantam Super Free version that Shimano SHOULD still market!Too bad ya were not able to get your combo back!I also snagged Shimano spinning rod n reel combo in the huge pond near I-12 and LOPA facility .On that trip thought I had HUGE catfish!!

Fishing out in gulf breeze brings back memories love it down there. If you get a chance go say hey to all my folks at outcast tackle and marine they will take care of you. If you ever need another rod since you lost your they have all you want. Or go out to gulf breeze bait and tackle they are good folks to. Wade across down by bob Sykes you’ll have a blast.

You could see the sickness in your face, but that was very relatable and video gold. Great video, and that high dollar loss should be in your title.

Waiting for our first flat spell here in Texas. They dropped our stinking limit to 3 specks. Shouldn’t take long when it goes flat.

Try this for a great tasting crab recipe. Super chill fresh live crabs. After chilled, pop the top shell off, remove the lungs/dead men, sex-organ, keep as much fat as you can along with the attached claws and legs. Soak in ‘tap water’, prepare a frying pan or fryer with your choice cooking oil, cover the wet crab halves in the fish fry of your choice, fry as you would fish, shrimp til you think they are cooked well ‘brown-crispy’. Takeout, let drain then pick as you would a boiled crab but has the fantastic taste of softshell crab. Enjoy… an old tip from Cajun neighbor some 60+ years back! John Castelluccio

I don't know why anybody was laughing ! I was crying at the rod takin off. In the future, just spin your drag loose three or four turns and then when you see the fish on, quickly put it back the same three or four turns. This way they can run some line out etc. Sea-ya

There’s definitely something immersive about wading to fish. It’s a real treat to watch the birds and the wildlife. I had a spot in Northern Utah where I’d fish on moonlit nights for submarine sized brown trout. It was cathartic to watch the mule deer drink and the raccoons wash their food and paws. Plus wading is very affordable!!

Sounds idyllic. Any bears in that area?

@@MarshManMasson Yes sir. We have a small population of black bears. As long as you don’t rub yourself in bacon before you hit the sleeping bag, they leave you alone. Word around the campfire is, wolves 🐺 are starting to appear. They are showing up from the reintroduction in Yellowstone. We also have a strong population of mountain lions. I’m very comfortable around any of them. Alligators give me the willys. Man eating dinosaurs that stalk you in murky waters. Sheesh.

Next time if you’re having trouble wading that flat, try shrimp imitations fished with a slow steady retrieve with the current if conditions allow. Personally I prefer DOA, Zman, or Gulp but there are lots of other options. Good luck

Looked like you were walking the beach in stilts the first section. How deep were in the water during wading? Is Florida not a paddle tail scenario? I noticed you threw soft dine 90% of the time. That would be a great catch and cook beach.
