I remember as a kid my father carefully checking hus 182's prop during the pre flight. Ran his finger all around the outside edge and looking for any anomalies...Always addressed any minor issues...A good Dad and a good pilot. I miss you Dad. Happy Father's Day.

Somehow I always imagined propellers going a lot faster than 1900rpm.

Can u spin ur hand at 16 times per second?

      @UltraMagaFan 5 месяцев назад +5

Considering the fact that those propellers are about 6 feet in diameter and they weigh about 120 pounds, 1,900 RPM is pretty damn fast.

Nope. Once the tips get close to supersonic they quickly lose efficiency.

Turboprop: Large Reduction Ratio in the Gearbox! ~30,000 RPM at the Turbine Shaft, similar at the Compressor, but the Props wouldn't be Efficient at those speeds, so they are geared way down, and to get usable Torque at them, so they can take a Good "Bite!"

Airplane engines are some real low speed things. Redline in trainers is about 2400rpm depending on the engine.

In the late '70's, dad loaned his aircraft to a fellow pilot for a 200 mile VFR trip. Both were Cardinal owners. About half way to the destination and at 5,000', approximately a six inch length broke off a tip. He pulled throttle to idle and landed safely at an airport he was overflying. Major vibration damage to wiring harness! I also flew this aircraft & never noticed any prop cracks but probably some nicks.

I love your simplistic approach to explaining this, I love everything aviation. My Dad was an American N.S. He never talked about mission, he did talk about flying & jumping out planes etc, I’ve always been fascinated with flying, but I don’t have a plane, pilot license or experience & Lord God didn’t give me wings, lol I was a passenger on an hour ride over lake Michigan on a commercial flight, Green Bay Wisconsin to Kalamazoo Michigan when I was 14 yrs old & we never went in the clouds lol…
May our Father Lord God bless you & your family in all you do always, in the Holy blood & name of wonderful Lord Jesus Christ I pray, AMEN!!!

Prop damage is from following too closely to another aircraft that is throwing debris. Just because you are a pilot doesn’t mean you are an expert at propellers. I have discovered that a lot of pilots are blissfully ignorant of engineering.
When I was learning to fly i was taught to check the prop. What I wasn’t taught was what to look for and what to do if I found something. So one day I “found” something to find out those answers. I highly recommend this approach. Flight instructor s are pilots, nothing teaches better than a reality check with a mechanic.

Just read a report of two prop planes that emergency landed where their props broke in half because of a incredibly small nick/ding. Please get these fixed or replaced before flying. It's not worth your life for something so small.

After a flight in moderate rain the blades show erosion. Often overlooked as a contributor.

I suppose this is one reason to put wings and engines high up on some reason. If rough landings on improvised landing strips are to be expected.

Use a "Bare Hand" and, if you can, put a Cotton Glove on your "Checking Hand" for a second "Opinion", it may help to notice small burrs that "Snag" the Fabric!

  • @josephking6515

I always check the prop by running the wooden dipstick along the leading edges. Use your bare hand could be painful if the previous pilot hadn't reported a strike.

We had a pilot come in with the tips of his prop bent forwards, he said he had no idea how it happened.
Turns out he flew too low over a reservoir and the tips of the prop hit the water.
Aircraft props make terrible boat props. 😂🇦🇺

Preflight will turn up any flaws, nicks or damage. A spinning airfoil will obviously be vulnerable to FOD.

Slowing down on landing and starting the takeoff run on floats you need to be careful as well. Water spray can pit a prop quite a bit.

I get nervous every time I see someone rotating the prop. I know how unlikely it is to start the engine accidentally just by spinning it but the chance isn’t zero.

    • @vdgvova9495

trust me you are NOT hand starting a gas turbine even if you try. in this engine, the power turbine is seperate from the gas generator. meaning that even if you can spin the engine by hand at over 2500 RPM it still would not start. also the fuel pump, igniters, and engine management have to be on.
