I was at this game. Jim Bouton’s appearance, even more than the legendary DiMaggio, and the reception he got from the audience were the highlights for me.
I was there as well--and was really pleased with the reception Bouton got from the fans--(you could tell it meant a lot to him to come back on good terms with the Yankees!)
I remember too. Jim’s daughter Laurie had recently passed. Laurie’s friends unfurled a “We Love You Laurie” banner in right field upper deck. Very moving.
Reread Ball Four for the maybe the 5th time. This time, 50th Anny edition. Very moving reading Bouton’s feelings/return to Old Timers day. Especially, for his family. Jim Bouton lost had his daughter Laurie 11 months before. RIP Jim.
I've read Ball Four at least 2- times. It's the greatest sports book in history and probably top 25 greatest book.O'm starting "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally" now.
The smile on Joe Torre’s face during DiMaggio’s ovation at 37:05 - looked like he was an 8 year old kid again. Those are the little things that really get to me.
Looking back now and realizing that DiMaggio had lung cancer at the time. Still, if I recall correctly, his death nine months was unexpected. Joe D was a heavy cigarette smoker all his life.
When I was a kid watching Yankee games, during inning breaks Mel would open a Ballantine beer and drink it. He opened a few before professional ads took over. RIP Mel.
Tom Tresh is one of my all-time favorites. So many times he stole home run balls which were going over the left field fence. He is the reason. I always wore #15 because of him.
Wow, this was the old timer's day I went to! I remember this, before I even see the whole video I know what happens. After a scoreless tie and 3 innings, Joe Pepitone complains they should get some extra innings cause they don't want to just tie, and then I believe Willie Randolph hits the homerun to beat the Dodgers in the bottom of the 4th. Very cool to have been there for. Unfortunately I also remember we lost the regular game to Albert Belle and the White Sox 6-2 that day. I remember thinking I can't believe I saw one of the greatest Yankee teams of all time just once that year and I figured my odds were pretty good that I'd be going to one of the wins but not to be. At least I convinced my uncle to let me stay until the last out. He is notorious for leaving anything early to beat the traffic but everyone knew I was not having it. Even at 14 everyone knew I'd never leave a game early. Good memories though.
I remember watching the real Yankees playing baseball during the Civil War I was there too. Shoeless Stonewall Jackson hit a homer and US Mudcat Grant was the winning pitcher
Don Reed Man, seeing the old Bulldog is the best, and your summation is right on the mark. He brought a whole generation back to the game while being absolutely true to his stands. He’s really missed, but I hear in the afterlife, you get your fastball back and the knuckleball ALWAYS knuckles. Love to JB.
crazy i remember sitting the upper deck in right field when randolph hit that home run. I believe Tommy Lasorda batted in this old timer's game also. I think Ralph Branca was there.
The Yankees WERE the greatest franchise in the world with the greatest history and tradition in the world with the greatest stadium in the world...then the Steinbrenner boys pissed it all away!
Ughhh...not trying to be salty....but Elliott Maddox DID NOT play on the 1978 World Champion Yankees Club..to the contrary, he played across the city on one of the worst teams in baseball that year...the METS...ehhh...shows how much Michael Kay knew about Yankee history...
My stinking Mets ownership has never given a damn about our history. Frugal Fred even made that cold dump "shitty field" look like Ebbetts field. We don't have the great tradition of the Yankees. But we have a history. Come on Coupons bring Old Timers Day Back! I want to cheer for Tom, Mike. Keith, Rusty, Buddy, Willie, Doc, Darryl, Cleon and the gang . Do something for us lifer fans for a change !

This would be Joe DiMaggio's last Old Timers Day. He died about nine months later.
25 years ago feels like another world. I guess it is😌

Thank you so much for posting this! Can't tell you how much I miss the old ballpark! Based on the attendance this year, so do most of the fans!
It will get better. More people are coming now that school is out and we are real contenders
@@Jherman10001 ... I doubt it.
Thank you to the Tresh family for posting this. Greatly appreciated.
I met Mike Torrez in 2019. A native of my hometown. He was one heck of a pitcher
Thank you so much for posting this. My grandfather played golf with Frank Messer on many occasions, and Mr. Messer was a class act.
I grew up listening to Frank Messer announce Yankee games with Phil Rizzuto and Bill White. So many good memories!
Bob Shepard, the voice of God.
Bobby Murcer is such a class act.

It's kinda sad knowing that we said goodbye to Joe Dimaggio a few months after this.
1998 was a magical year for the Yankees. They went 114-48 in the regular season and swept the World Series. Who could ask for anything more!
Thanks for posting this awesome video. Where have the years gone?
Dam, I miss the old stadium, the new stadium SUCKS ! 😝
Tell me about it! We did a stadium tour there. Huge waste of time and money.
Tommy Lasorda is loved in everywere RIP great man
I was at this OTD. I will always remember Willie Randolph hitting that walk off home run against Tommy John. Seems like yesterday.
R.I.P. Jim Bouton

Me too! This was the only Old Timers' Day I was at to date.
I call. BS. Post tics and pics

17:48 Jim Bouton
A superb person. Bright, nice, comfortable in his own skin. RIP, Jim.

@Bryan Robinson look for a book "ball four" or watch Battered Bastards of Baseball
I was at this old timers day!
I was at this game what a pleasure to see it again
The Yankees were the 1st team to have an old timers day and they had a lock on OTD, I laugh when I see other teams attempt to host an OTD
Just remembered was at this game, as a Mets fan it was pretty cool to see Joltin Joe in person as a kid
I remember how hard Jim Bouton threw; his hat fell off with every pitch
Bouton making the hat fall off is great
Wow look at Lasorda swinging a bat. With authority!
Thanks for posting-I'm too young to remember Old Timers Days before about 2005 or so, so I don't recall seeing DiMaggio ever come.
This was his last one. He died nine months later

They need to do this again, Yankee greats v an old timers “all star” team
A good seat in the new stadium during day games is section 320. I like the sun anywhere.

Will Drucker Michael Kay is an idiot
Yeah that was a mistake Elliott played on the 1976 Yankees not the 1978 team.
Michael Kay’s voice sounded a bit younger back then.
Why is Charlie Watts sitting in the dugout talking to Mariano Rivera?
Wow, how do I not remember the Dodgers being there for this?
TL2354 I been a fan for 36 years almost never miss old timers day but never seen the Yankees play anyone but the Yankees on old timers day wtf😱
Ha!! I was at this.
@Bryan Robinson No marriage and no kids for me.
they needed a better introduction for Joe DiMaggio

Thank God I’m a diehard New York Yankees fan and fanatic. We have the best franchise in baseball. The greatest.
@@steviesoprano WAS the greatest.. and I WAS a Yankee fan!
I don't recall Maddox being on the Yankees in 78. Wasn't he on the Mets?
I thought Billy managed him with the rangers; he didn't like him
Yeah. Mike Kay booted it.
Maddox was on the 1976 Yankees not 1978.
Michael Kay has a huge head
They treated Mel Allen like shit and then toss in a plaque decades later. Bums.
