I'm just wondering how preserved these finds were. Sounds like the Sophie Carpenter stuff was at least self uploaded and reissued. Makes me wonder if we're all discovering "Lostwave" music through these old cassette hunts and they wouldn't see the light of the internet without the Archive. Anyway, I get the feeling Paul was a lounge act on a small, low rent, local ship. The autograph is a dead giveaway, sure, but you get the sense that these things were sold in the lobby (or whatever the equivalent is on a boat).
Hallucinasia's music was pretty cool, but the vocals were really weak. I was oddly entertained by the Lido Shuffle cover, and Situations Vacant sounds like the theme to a late 80s syndicated sitcom.
6:27 and justice regains the NICE LADY'S composure 10:56-13:30 the cheese is strong with this one 22:54 so this is what Stickman Joe did before his adventures 28:42-29:32 oh good grief
Have you ever heard of a group called Coulter and Kemp? They have an album called “House in the Trees” you should try and find. They were from San Diego ca. 1979 self released album with original songs
The first band reminded me a lot of a poor man's Nevermore, a metal band in the nineties front by Warrel Dane, someone else no longer with else. The punk band, I've heard worse in the thirty years I was in metal bands. Heard a lot a lot of punk, and they were not the worst, but Lido Shuffle should never be covered by a psudo punk band. Ms. Carpenter, a swing and a miss. The next one, oh boy. Why end songs that way. Richard Cheese said you are giving the rest of us a bad name. That is just bad. Thanks for taking one for the team Ben.
If you ask me it sounds like Sophie Carpenter WOULD survive a nuke blast, don't ask me why. Plus the art style for Uncle Reege looks (and sounds) like Daniel Johnston. I don't know.
…which still doesn’t make much sense. Their music is one of the last things you experience before death? Not exactly appetizing (even within the realm of Metal).
We all can use some cheese and corn in our diets, and Benny boy is graciously fortifying the menu for us. Seems like Lido Shuffle is polarizing in comments, but as a fellow hound, I dig it. Well done on the overdone, Ben!
I'm non-ironically into The Gorehounds, I think. I liked the "Lido Shuffle" cover a lot - can't say they weren't trying different stuff across their 13 tracks.
The singing on that first tape sounds like someone consciously trying to keep themselves from slurring words together. The second tape gives me Jan Terri vibes if Jan Terri wasn't a total wreck. The third tape was actually kinda sick. Paul Woodson is peak sitcom-core And i'll just say that if Chev Chelios heard Nicole's rendition of Achey Breaky Heart over the radio during that scene in Crank, he would've died instantly and the movie would've ended right there.
I would do an episode like this of the local Lehigh Valley bands I have tapes and CDs of, but unfortunately, most of them were actually good. I did however enjoy the Gorehounds.
With that first one, I can't help but wonder if whoever mixed it deliberately buried the vocals, or if it was just incompetence. Sophie Carpenter's album sounds like Christian music, only without the God and Jesus stuff in it.
I need to find out how to put my old demo tapes across the pond into Ben's favourite Goodwills for him to find.... But then, our music was of course never sleazy or cheesy :P
Have you ever listened to Chemical People - So Sexist!? They were on the Santa Cruz label in the '80s. I used to have it on vinyl, but I lost it when I got locked up in 2018 and lost my apartment. I still have it on cassette.
Did you ever film a master class on reattaching vestron (or any other label) back to the VHS or betamax tape? I have a bunch of labels that have fallen off. Could really use some help
My brain must be broken because I like the stuff you have on these "Random [x]" episodes more often than not. That Sophie Carpenter tape was actually pretty decent. Maybe it's less tough to get through when it's a two minute montage in an Archive episode--Lovebuzz was just great though, I've listened to Toenail Dragon more than I care to admit.
Me personally, I am now addicted to Paul Woodson. It's like an entire album of covers by someone who's only musical experience comes from producing theme songs for 90s sitcoms.
You know, I'd cringe if somehow one of my high school band tapes ended up in a thrift store, made their way across the country, and ended up online...then again, they wouldn't be nearly as bad as Hallucinasia. Also, it's not "punk" to alphabetize your VHS.
"Embroidery is one hell of a drug." - I legit snort-laughed.
So nice to have an Oddity Archive episode uploaded on my birthday.
Happy Birthday!
Hmmmm...Lido Shuffle. Nothing says punk like a Boz Scaggs cover. That may have been more appropriate for the Sophie Carpenter album.

Cheese Me, Sleaze Me - A lesser known hit by the Scorpions
😆 😂😅 😆
@StabelliAdam_ especially on those Big City Nights at The Zoo!
Well there's a British band Slade that had a hit in the 70s called "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me" (title sic, btw)...
@@djhrecordhound4391 yep
Did... did he just sing "Shittin on the dock of the bay"?
“Sh*ttin’ on the dock” is probably more accurate anyway.
Thought it was “sitting on a cock cause I’m gay” 🤔
Must be a Blowfly fan.
Ok, I Unironically liked the 1986 Mom rock vibes of Sophie carpenter, I want to listen the whole thing 😂
Good lord, that cheese did not disappoint in the least. How does Sophie manage to sound more 1986 than 1986 itself?
I really hope there's a "Hired Stud. Will Travel" sequel in there.
"it hurts just a little" could've been a bop if they could decide whether to use backup vocals or echo
That first band sounds like the music of Slayer with Ozzy at the front. Dare I say, I liked it.
Hallucinasia's music was pretty cool, but the vocals were really weak. I was oddly entertained by the Lido Shuffle cover, and Situations Vacant sounds like the theme to a late 80s syndicated sitcom.
Sophie Carpenter sounds like an even worse 10,000 Maniacs. Which is tough!
Wat? With Natalie or with the other girl?
@@Legend813a Yup!
Sophie sounds like a mom who had one too many glasses of chardonnay at the karaoke bar. I'm suddenly appreciating autotune a lot more now.
You know Benny Boy, because of you, Zovello haunts my nightmares continually.
Imagine what my nightmares look like at this point.
"What Ben's throat looks like after eating a mildy spicy taco" what's "mildy spicy"? Is that when the taco is mildly spicy but also moldy?
If it’s from Taco Bell, possibly.
KSLZ 93.3 Sleazy Listening
Gorehounds seem pretty cool to be honest
Paul Woodson is no Otis Redding.
Gorehound might have been the originators of ASMR covers of Boz Scaggs songs
Sugarloaf from Denver had a couple of medium sized hits
Sugarloaf was a regular pop/rock group. Denver (and surrounding areas) did spawn a few major pop groups, but no major metal groups that I’m aware of.
6:27 and justice regains the NICE LADY'S composure
10:56-13:30 the cheese is strong with this one
22:54 so this is what Stickman Joe did before his adventures

Sounds like Nicole spent her $15.00 birthday money on some studio time. At JC Penney. After hours.

I enjoyed the Sophie selections, but my 9 year old self probably wouldn’t have liked it in 1986. Being a product of the 80s is part of its charm.
If you ask me it sounds like Sophie Carpenter WOULD survive a nuke blast, don't ask me why.
Plus the art style for Uncle Reege looks (and sounds) like Daniel Johnston. I don't know.
I suspect "Hallucinasia" was a combination of "hallucination" and "euthanasia." Euthanasia was in the news (and courts) a lot at that time.
…which still doesn’t make much sense. Their music is one of the last things you experience before death? Not exactly appetizing (even within the realm of Metal).
@@OddityArchivecertainly not, but the name sounds brutal, which is really the key when looking for a name for your metal band
Could be Hallucinatiion and Youthanasia, the 1994 CD from Megadeth. Even then, the drums are submerged in reverb.
Halluthinasia might have sold the pun a BIT more.

22:55 that's a korg m1 btw. The drums and the guitar pretty much give it away.
I would do an episode like this of the local Lehigh Valley bands I have tapes and CDs of, but unfortunately, most of them were actually good. I did however enjoy the Gorehounds.
I think I have a name for the (Santa Cruz) Gorehounds' genre - Cornycore.
Interesting show, that heavy metel tape, coworker had and put on loop one overnight. The group from Denver.
With that first one, I can't help but wonder if whoever mixed it deliberately buried the vocals, or if it was just incompetence.

I actually like the Sophia Carpenter stuff. That bass tone is ridiculous.
I have plans this weekend. I'm dialing all 10000 numbers in Denver's 286 exchange...
Sophie shows us how to have a good voice but not be able to carry a tune in a bucket.
Paul has the opposite problem. Just because he can carry a tune, it doesn't mean he should.

I use a spritz or two of Scotch 77 spray glue on the label, give it about 30 seconds, then reattach the label to the tape.

The sleazy stuff was terrible but i actually liked the last Sophie Carpenter song.
Make it stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any plans to revisit conservative folk music since Oliver Anthony's big hit last year?
His is the only further conservative folk music I've heard since the original episode.
@OddityArchive Same I think he's the only one who successfully pulled it off.
A punk band does not cover Boz Scaggs.
One could argue it’s the most punk move of all.
WHEN U UPLOAD RADIO SHOW AGAIN
