Summary: I customized my car horn to play three different sounds. The main sound is the "Courtesy Honk" which is used to get the attention of other drivers in a non-emergency scenario. It's two quick chirps of the horn that is not only friendly sounding, but it's not as loud as a normal car horn.

Great idea. The polite tap tap of the honk is very common here in Costa Rica. I often see it given to thank truck and heavy machinery vehicle drivers when they give you the wave that it is clear to pass them.
I've been waiting my entire life to do this. I'm getting my first car in a few months and I can't wait to put one of these horns in!

Wonderful. I have always mini-beeped at the appropriate time for all the reasons you have given. I also wanted train air horns on my Ford Pinto at age 17, mostly to stop cars from backing up at me when they clearly didn't see me there. Brilliant job and thanks!
At least it's your front to their back instead of your back to their front. The idea of being rear-ended in a Pinto isn't exactly something I want to think about.

Love the idea. You should rearrange the buttons, though, from least urgent to most urgent to reduce the odds of, as others have pointed out, accidentally pressing the wrong button.

Great idea! As a long time motorcyclist (I used to commute 125 miles per day on SoCal freeways), I have converted my horns over to compact air horns on my bikes. They have saved my bacon many times where the original are so weak, people can't hear them, or just ignore them!
I love it, loud honks spook me even if they aren't for me.

In my younger days I owe him 1964, Volvo P 1800. The car was stylish and was a wonderful piece of machinery to own and drive.
It came with an electric shift gear overdrive and perhaps the most brilliant aspect of this car design in the late 1950s was that it had a courtesy horn.
Ever since that experience, I have wished every car has this feature. Do you have an absolutely male that is real, and would make the world a far better place

I’m a bit surprised car companies have not picked up on this idea. Having a courtesy horn is a wonderful thing for people with modest, modest dispositions.
In my city, buses have what we called a gong : a friendly horn that sound like a friendly bell. It's very usefull in big cities and they do have a classic horn too !

Reminds me of when I was driving an older Jetta, and tapping the steering wheel to the music. The vibrations caused the horn button wire to come off the button and lay directly on the steering column. Horn honked continuously until I peeled open the steering wheel and re-set the wires.

In Europe horns are used in necessary cases only! For other cases one or two short high beams switches are used and it works as well (if the driver infront of you is not literally sleeping :D )

But it's kind of white noise, a low bubbling like an aquarium.

It's a great idea that should become a standard feature. I can imagine that some people will still get mad when you use this, because that's just how some people are, but, if it became common and everyone knew what it was, they would know what your intent is.

Not sure about all Chevys, but my fathers Chevy Volt has a much quieter and more "polite" horn for pedestrians which can serve the same purpose.

The funny thing is, some cars DID used to have something like this- except it was a set of 'town' and 'country' horns instead. One for use in, well, towns, where everyone's fairly close together, and a louder one for use in more open areas where everyone's much further apart.
I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in Denmark it's only legal to use a "normal" horn
In most countries, it's only legal to use the horn as a safety warning (Eg. warning you're coming around a blind corner, or to prevent a collision), so "please move, the light is green" or "thanks" aren't legal uses of the horn, just as how cars aren't supposed to have random flashing lights. The intention of the law in the US also makes this type of horn illegal, but the law is poorly worded, so it's technically only illegal to use these horns on a highway.

When we were kids in the fifties, our father installed a three button horn system under the hood of his car. He liked to play “when it’s springtime in the.Rockies “ at any opportunity. He could play other things too, but that’s the one I remember.
