      I can't comment on the video for some reason but I will comment here.
      The reason why they trusted the CIA was because the CIA thought that the people and people in the government were in against Castro.
      Basically, like Russia with Ukraine.
      Putin thought the people and people in the government were against the President of Ukraine but they were mistaken

      If you haven’t seen it, you might like Tom Scott’s video called “there is no algorithm for the truth.” Its covers a lot of bases but its mostly philosophical. It explains a lot about the RUclips algorithm, but its all from the point of view of a programmer with a linguistic degree with a mostly successful RUclips channel. The talk is given at the royal institute so its like a longe Ted talk from the early days when ted talks were good.
      Good luck with your channel i really appreciate what you and your team creates.

      To be fair, the landing and resupply ships that were also crewed by Cuban exiles ran off as well. If they had ammo as well as the additional troops and vehicles still on the ships, they could've at least made a better fight of it.

      And a corollary to that; don't run operations like this without the full informed commitment of your own government. Because a substantial part of this fiasco was from Kennedy going "you're doing what? I didn't agree to that!", and pulling support...

      I'm the son of a Cuban exile - what's wild to me is how many exiles (and their offspring) don't know what actually happened. They don't want to know the details, they only want to relive their experience. It's all or nothing with the Cuban exile community. They somewhat openly expect the Republican party to help them retake the island.
      These are, for the most part, people who were landowners or in the pocket of the puppet Batista's gov't. They never gave a crap about their people. They want their land and luxury back.

      That implies that they had any chance at success whatsoever. Bautista's regime was horrifically violent and forced most Cubans to toil away on sugar plantations owned by foreign investors. In the first few years after the revolution, most of the Cuban expats were people or families who directly profited from the dictatorship and the plantations, so why would the people they oppessed less than 5 years ago help them regain power?

      One thing I don't get is the CIA asked the Cuban exiles if there would be widespread disobedience among the Cubans if there was an invasion against Castro and the answer the top of the CIA got (I don't know what went on at the lower levels) was "yeah, Castro is a commie tyrant no one wants, but if you ask anyone in Cuba they will have to say they like the revolution because they're afraid." So with this "intel" it was reasonable to assume that even if the initial invasion was a clusterfuck, civil disobedience would cause the Castro regime to fall apart, just wait 7 days. Obviously the CIA completely misread the public sentiment in Cuba. Given what they thought the public in Cuba thought, it seemed even a half baked invasion would work and _if that given is true_ I agree with that sentiment. What I don't understand is that the CIA had thousands of Cuban exiles to interview and somehow not one guy was able to figure out what the Cuban public thought?

    Not our government's finest moment. I can't imagine what it felt like to be on the beach, believing that supply and air support necessary for victory would always be there, only to find that they were abandoned in their hour of need. Or that the military sitting just offshore could only sit in vain as orders for them to assist the people dying on the beach never came.

    • @taiwandxt6493
      @taiwandxt6493 28 дней назад +11

      It's not our government's fault overall, but rather just a big blunder by the CIA. Kennedy's hesitancy to approve air support and active resupply for the exiles is understandable as plausible deniability was probably the best move for the United States diplomatically. However, the CIA fumbled the ball big time by not only faulty intelligence but giving false hopes to the exiles in direct contrast with the U.S governments' official position. Even if their intel was right and the Cuban people would've risen up against Castro, Kennedy not providing any sort of active support to the exiles should've been enough for the CIA to call off the operation. Instead, the CIA just lied to them.

    Excellent video, as usual. In case anybody was wondering what happened to Pepe San Roman, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia: “After the brigade had ceased fighting on 19 April 1961, the third day of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, San Román and his men scattered into the woods and swamps. He was captured by Cuban militia on 25 April 1961. Román was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a mass trial for treason, along with everyone else who was captured. He was released from prison and flown to Miami on 24 December 1962. On 29 December 1962, Pepe San Román was on stage next to the 35th US president, John F. Kennedy, at the Orange Bowl in Miami during the homecoming ceremony for captured Brigade 2506 veterans. The other leaders of the Brigade also on stage at the occasion were José Miró Cardona and Manuel Artime. Pepe Perez San Román committed suicide by taking an overdose in Miami, Florida, on 10 September 1989. He was survived by two sons, Alfredo and Robert; two daughters, Marisela and Sandra; a brother, Roberto Pérez San Roman, a sister, Laly de la Cruz, and five grandchildren.”
