The MOST OFFENSIVE ADVERTISEMENT in Super Bowl HISTORY | SalesGenie (Super Bowl XLII)

- If Just For Feet had the worst commercial in Super Bowl history, SalesGenie might be number two. Because at Super Bowl XLII, the company thought it was a good idea to show an advertisement involving pandas talking with fake Chinese accents so bad that there was outrage immediately afterwards, as the ad aired once and then never again due to its offensive and racist material. This is the breakdown behind that ad

After you said, “There are some ads where you have to stretch to realize what the problem is with them,” RUclips ran an ad.
😂😂😂
Was it a good example of that quote?
@@freakfoxvevo7915 I guess?

RUclips way of saying...
WELL SEE ABOUT THAT
This feels like a Family Guy gag not a Super Bowl commercial.
Yea or American Dad
It seems a bit like something someone would make as a joke if the company had done something a bit less offensive as the “next ‘logical’ step” punchline.
Or a figurative punch at a rival company after commiting a mistake
I can hear Peter say, "Oh come on, Lois, I'll turn things around, like a panda running a bamboo furniture store!" 😂🤣

I was 7 and I was watching the game with my family with uncles, aunts, cousins etc... and when the ad ended my mom was like "go play with your toys" because my uncles and my dad were laughing their asses off when they saw it and I tried to understand what was funny about it lmaoooo
To anyone who doesn't know the result. Prince v The Weather. Prince beats The Weather by a pretty large margin.
Nah, it wasn't really a fight, God just saw Prince was doing a Super Bowl show and decided to help with the special effects.
@@imrustyokay I actually thought the rain came from dubs crying.
Prince was probably the best Super Bowl halftime show ever in my opinion

That's because Prince was that dude! We'll probably never see another one like him.

Have you ever watched an SB ad and your gut instinct tell tells you there’s no way this could work?
I remember last year with the Taco Bell ad I thought it was gonna be good but as soon as I saw it, I knew that there was no way that it was gonna work and I was correct and also JJ9 Made a video about Taco Bell’s and Super Bowl 36 so obviously they don’t learn that lesson
And sure enough, your gut instinct was smarter than that of a business owner.

If so, your gut instinct was smarter....
@@Donald38 Welcome to dumb business decisions
I thought the first ad was the terribly offensive one, and I thought it's not that bad. Then I saw the panda one, and Oh No!
Interesting, since there was a panda in the National Zoo named--you guessed it--Ling Ling!
Yep, Ling-Ling was a very well-known panda to those who followed the news in the 1970s. The loan of a Chinese panda to the US National Zoo was considered a diplomatic overture at the time, so that panda was on nearly every newscast for months, it seemed like. That's got to be the primary reason why the yahoo who wrote the ad copy used the name. That doesn't change the fact that it's a racist stereotype being portrayed, no matter what name you use.
"Nobody remembers this ad"
To be fair, I don't remember that Super Bowl, either.
I just remember rain, and Chicago scoring somehow(Devin Hester?), even though it seemed like they never had the ball.
That SalesGenie ad for Colts vs Bears was the advertisement equivalent of mid, also doesn't really help that Super Bowl tons of people missed the first half of the game because some parts of the country was buried in a blizzard that knocked out power for a couple days and some didn't get power back until the third quarter opening kickoff and that bold onside kick from the Colts (this is legit what happened to me in my hometown of Wildwood, NJ, my house legit got power back as the Colts and Bears lined up for the kickoff)
Budweiser has crabs worshipping it? Kinda fitting beings that a lot of people catch crabs after drinking Budweiser.
I can remember this ad vividly, just because the very first thought when seeing this was "wow, that ad seemed pretty racist". I remember it feeling awkward to see it too, right in the middle of the Super Bowl, and not at 2 AM on a cable channel. It'd be like "Girls Gone Wild" running an ad during the Super Bowl.
Perish the thought!!
It's NOT racist. It's stereotypical.
Yes!, it totally gives off those 2am on Comedy Central in 2001 Vibes!
The strange thing is the manes of the pandas that China lent to the US under Nixon were Ling Ling. It doesnt excuse the tacism of the ads.
@@deuce-infinitum2001 Yeah it's annoying when people confuse the two. And a panda in a Chinese Zoo actually did have a Chinese name. That's not racist to give a panda a chinese name.
After you said, "This ad that aired in the fourth quarter" was followed by a RUclips ad.
And just a few months after this ad aired, the actual panda named Ling Ling passed away
'That be none. I failed the bar exam'. leo getz things done.

I’d actually say this ad was even worse than the Justforfeet ad because it doesn’t even look like it belongs anywhere near the Super Bowl
Some of the most interesting Super Bowl ads to me are the ones like this that look cheap and lazy and it makes you wonder where they got the money for the spot
I give justforfeet a pass because I didn't think it was deliberate. But this one seems like self-deprecation except they're not Chinese. Smh...
TBH, this ad works well for that South Park episode where the boys are trying to watch the Terrance & Phillip Movie Trailer but have to sit through the *Russell Crowe: Fighting 'Round The World* show to do so
One of my all-time favorite episodes
Tears of laughter the first time I saw that and Tugger tried to kill himself

I’m Sorry, WHAT? at 10:13,
And as a Bonus, Krusty the Klown Bewildered.
When running down the Anheuser- Busch ads, you forgot the Bud Lite lobster ad, which was absolutely hysterical!
Salesgenie went belly up like the Patriots undefeated season.
Wow they still exist! They got bought out but still exist...
I don’t know if this says more about Me or the commercials,
But after watching Both of these MILLION DOLLAR Ads,
I still have no idea what a “Sales Lead” is,
Or how getting 100 of them for free can turn a fledgling business into a Fortune 500 Powerhouse.
Which is Another reason why these ads Fail.
Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing were the Pandas in the National Zoo in DC into the 90's.
Kinda glad I don't remember this ad lol
I can't say that this isn't racist, but those are names of actual pandas.
True and thats why its disappointed they should've ended with the Panda rich and living the American life kinda like ragged to riches
And visiting the other bears at the ZOO?! Very creepy!
TBF Alec Baldwin denied the ad coffee, because it wasn't a closer
To be fair to them look at the names of the pandas in the Washington DC Smithsonian zoo
Vin Gupta sounds like just a terrific human being. First an ad that openly mocks the majority of its audience with an, "Only fools work hard," line, and then another that just mocks a minority of it, but in a terrible and tasteless way. Does he break out the illogical, "How can I be racist against X race/ethnic group, when I, myself, am a member of Y race/ethnic group," defense? Of course he does, of course he does... Anyway, can't wait for the baseball channel (and baseball season for that matter!)
I must admit, I never saw this commercial - truly horrible as it was - while watching Superbowl XLII. But then, I was watching it in Great Britain, on BBC One. A channel that shows no commercials whatsoever.
And I take it that Salesgenie is no longer in business?
No, it is still in buisness
To be honest, I don't even remember this ad. I was at a bar watching the game, and I must have been distracted by something or other.
@DavidLimReport Possibly.
Oh man I am so looking forward to the Super Bowl! You know five hours straight of long, wondrous ads, a glorious and glitzy two-hour halftime show, with some great inane commentary sprinkled in, interrupted ever so often by a few minutes of this annoying thing called football. Good times y'all!

Ling Ling was the name of a real, oddly famous, panda in Japan at the time. He was a symbol of the reading tensions between Japan and China.
This changes nothing about the af, but I think it's interesting.
After watching this video, i now have the urge to buy bamboo furniture for my living room. Is Ling Ling's still in business?
3:14 this comment really triggered some unpleasant memories I had being a young Bears fan 😂
Like I remember my parents let me stay up late to watch the game, I was almost 6 and it was the first Super Bowl I watched (as I really got into the Bears that season) i remember being upset the next day in Kindergarten
It was true though. That defense would have won 3 Super Bowls if the offense was at all competent. Not good, just better than having Sexy Rexy under center (for a game until he inevitably got injured).
I was 15 and a Frehsman in high school and as a Colts fna I enjoyed that Super Bowl..nit beucas ehtye beat the. Ears so much but beicas ether won a Super Bowl
@@TheSonicsean Your comment just made me realize just how bad the NY Jets’ Offense was this season! And they beat us once! #GoBills. To be fair, that was A: Because of the Jets’ Defense and B: We didn’t have Matt Milano that game and the Jets ran all over the field.
I marked out when you referenced Tommy "I didn't hit her, it's bulls#!+, I did not hit her. I did not. Oh hi, Mark" Wiseau.
I'd like to see a medical ad where a woman walks into the Dr.s/ hospital and quotes "Well, I definitely have breast cancer!"
Idk if my memory serves correctly, but I remember watching this ad after the Super Bowl on Adult Swim's block like around midnight and after dark
This idea is so bad even Mike McCarthy would have rejected it.
Wow……. L-M-F-A-O!!! I forgot about this 😂. Not the low budget kung fu pandas!!!
As a white heterosexual American male that constantly has everything about me made fun of I'm not all that offended.
I remember seeing this and I was in complete disbelief at the time. What got me wasn't just the accents of the pandas--it was that the other panda who "saved the day" by telling the other two about SalesGenie just happened to speak in a perfect standard American accent. It was a caricature of Asians *and* a white-savior narrative.
Another prominent banned Super Bowl ad was the Holiday Inn school reunion one, where a beautiful woman is approached by a guy who finally recognizes her as..."Bob? Bob Johnson?!" Unlike SalesGenie, I found that one genuinely funny, especially in the '90s when it aired. But it didn't fly then and definitely wouldn't fly today. (Also, the guy who recognizes "Bob"? None other than Mr. Kenny Bania. I suspect the ad was actually banned because it didn't contain a funny word like "puke," or have a joke about Ovaltine.)
More notes as I get into the video...a racist, white-savior ad...written by a guy who I'm ASSUMING is from India! Unbelievable.
It was bizarre, but, I actually don't think it's the most offensive ad ever. If any of you are familiar with 2Set Violin (two Chinese Australian musicians), the LingLing thing takes on a special level of hilarity
Ads like this are made by people who believe the lie that as long as it gets your product talked about it's not a bad ad. As an advertising major in college, this is poppycock. I for one won't patronize a business or product based on the ad. I'm not the only one.
Thanks for explaining why it was racist, otherwise I wouldn’t have known why. It’s a terrible commercial, but that’s all I saw it as.
Could any person imagine doing this in 2022 with the *old normal* restored.
This somehow manages to be as offensive as the Asian character in Sixteen Candles (1984), and in only 30 seconds, too...
What's racist about Long Duc Dong? Wait , Long Duc Dong! I just got that one. That's hilarious.
Who knew Michael Scott was just copying this CEO by keeping advertising in house!
As usual your delivery, especially in your law school anecdote, made this video 100x funnier man 😂
Is it bad that I laughed at this for the sheer stupidity of this ad?
No.
Gupta's reasoning is just as hard to follow as his work! "They don't speak german"? Exactly, what's that got to do with anything?
Ah, the Glengarry leads... cause you drove a Hyundai, that's my name, lol.
Lol. I remember this. So horrible it was hilarious.
I clearly remember this ad and laughed my ass off at how bad it was. Looking back, it was extremely offensive
Why is the Panda Psychic's accent different..?
Bingo. That's what drove me crazy about this when I was watching it live. The pandas with the stereotype voices are more or less helpless but a panda with a perfect standard American accent "helps" them. I had a bigger problem with that than I did with the cheesy fake foreign accents.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following:
1. The commercial Just For Feet ran in Super Bowl 33.
2. How the rock group The Eagles turned down the opportunity to play at halftime of Super Bowl 42.
And the time time during Super Bowl 24 that Pat Bowlen, the owner of the Denver Broncos, offended the Chinese American community after a bad joke about San Francisco 49ers WR Jerry Rice.
You could learn more about that by clicking the card in the upright corner
@@northstarpokeshipper2148 Cognac Time!
The names of the pandas were the least of my concerns with this ad. That was bad and it just got worse. I'm shocked Fox even accepted it to air during the game. If my ad agency pitched this to me, they'd be fired on the spot.
This commercial looks like something you would see on the lifetime movie network, it just looks so generic
Man this was way worst then I thought it was, thank you so much for these deep dives
I can’t wait for the baseball channel to start. I bet this year’s ads will be spectacular without being racist. Those panda bears make me say I rather look at the Charmin bears.
I missed this during the game. This is the first I ever heard of this ad. Wow!
To be honest, it’s a shitpost, not a commercial. I love it.
Maybe, MAYBE if this ad run during Super Bowl I it would be understandable with some of the universal racist tropes against Asians and Asian-Americans fresh off some of our wars in that part of the world (WWII, Korea, Vietnam which was ongoing at the time). For that to have happened only 15 years ago is amazing. This was the one Super Bowl that I attended in person, so looks like I didn't miss out on much as compared to the at home experience!
Clearly, the ad would have done much better if the pandas did nothing but spike the ball into the ground for 30 seconds straight.
Hoo boy do I remember cringing when I saw this commercial. Though I think you may have to do a video on Nationwide's infamous "dead boy" commercial from Super Bowl XLIX. I don't know if it's more offensive than the Sales Genie commercial but it is the most depressing commercial in super bowl history.
Yea me and my sister loved the Nationwide ads until the final part
@@RetroJR3379 Well even aside from the utterly depressing ending for an advertisement highlighting the problem of childhood accidents it doesn’t even highlight any useful information on how to prevent childhood accidents. It’s just “kids die” the end.
@@PaulSebert That what was disappointed and looked like a typical Nationwide commercial. People were most outrage on the Coca-Cola ads where everyone was singing American The Beautiful in different languages
To make things worse, this was probably was in the lower end of the Top 5 Super Bowls in recent memory; and in the solid Top 10 overall. It was one of the Top 3 biggest playoff upsets in American history; and one of the Top 20 world wide.
Yeah, folks were definitely still watching in the fourth quarter on this one.
I presume SB III is number one.
Although the title of the video says 'XLII', which was one of the best Super Bowls(and football games, period) ever played, the ad seen here aired during SB XLI, which was horrible.
You can't blame foreigners for not understanding how thin-skinned and eager to be offended Americans are.
I think that the just for feet as you talked about a few years ago was worse
I didn't find this ad offensive at all.
Can you imagine an alternate universe where the "Just for feet" super bowl ad was well received and kept returning every year for every super bowl. Along with promotions like the Olympics where the Kenyan runner gets a world record by being chased by those hunters, the world cup in South Africa and even cross overs with movies like District 9 and Black Panther. Then it all finally stops because of the 2020 George Floyd protests? With Super Bowl LV having the Kenyan runner and the hunters making peace as a final send off of a legendary ad run?
Ching ching!? good god, that's even worse! That's not even vaguely a name!
I remember seeing this commercial when it aired. And to be fair, all pandas _do_ have names like LingLing because China owns every single Panda on the planet & leases them to.zoos in America for a couple years, or so, before taking them back.
China sees it as a good will mission or w/e, since there would be no pandas in U.S. or Canadian zoos, without borrowing some from China.
On top of everything else, the insanely stereotypical girl panda was a total ripoff of Hello Kitty. So we have plagiarism on top of racism. Way to go, Sales Genie!
Super Bowl 41 the commercial I remember most was the infamous Snickers commercial with the guys accidentally kissing
I was in college when this commercial originally ran. I was hanging watching the game at my soon-to-be fraternity house and we could not believe how racist that commercial was. We recognized it at the time.
Which fraternity?
In China they got ads running black people being washed in washing machines coming out “clean” and Chinese. So yeah. Let’s talk about what’s racist
LMAO What? Are they on RUclips or billibilli?
@@Not_Brandino ruclips.net/video/Few8kJ0zfnY/видео.html not saying this ad here is great that ran on the SB. just saying, it could have been worse
I can’t even remember the first ad after watching that atrocity.
Who would buy edible furniture?!?!
I laughed, then I laughed at JG9's reaction, and then said WTF on this ad.
Those horribly fake Chinese accents were so bad I thought they were supposed to be horribly fake Japanese accents for a second there.
NFL has done few creative SuperBowl commercials both from 45 and hope JG9 make a video about it. One of it was when they used TV shows like Brady Bunch, Full House, Happy Days to name a few and the other the NFL Lockout.
This ad was worse than if they did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every single play
So Ling Ling was eating his own computer?😅
The accents are a bad idea, but three very quick Google searches:
"Ling is a gender-neutral name of Chinese origin."
"Giant pandas are native to central China"
"A panda's daily diet consists almost entirely of the leaves, stems and shoots of various bamboo species."
Did Brendan Schaub write this ad?
DICEY, DICEEEEEEEEY
I remember the ad (having it be part of one of the best Super Bowls of all time helped). I didn't see the first one because the only time my Bears made a Super Bowl in my lifetime I of course had work (and this was before streaming kiddos), but man, the first one was bad for being too boring, the second one needed to be about 5000x more boring. The only way it could have been worse is if they gave the pandas worse names.
Was this commerical written by Michael Scott?
Omg their first commercial looks so low budget 😹
This has the look and racist attitudes from the early 1960's. I bet you could convince someone that this was from a Jetsons episode.

This guy says "Superbowl" faster than I've ever heard anyone say those two words. Very well put together video!
I liked how the panda winked at the end
I see why SalesGenie kept things in-house. That would've likely kept its ad from ranking so low. This one was even worse than the ad they had at Super Bowl XLI.
Are they even still in business?
@@raymondhopwood9393 Yeah, but as Data Axle Genie.
I honestly don't see anything wrong with this commercial. It's a cute commercial about pandas trying to do business.
