    Hi Ashley, your videos are so informative! I am going to purchase the McKenzie cardigan pattern, it is just what I have been looking for, but this will be my first attempt at using a pattern with a chart.
    I have been knitting about 4 years, but have mostly stayed with very basic patterns in the round. I am a left handed knitter, taught myself to knit watching RUclips videos by holding my phone up to a hand mirror to see the maneuvers in reverse. I knit in the opposite direction from right handed knitters, I move my stitches from the holding needle in my right hand to my working needle in my left hand. I have become fairly adept at reverse engineering stitch sequences to match the order in which I stitch if the sequence is not symmetrical. I have never knit a sweater in pieces, but I want to begin knitting that way. I have come to knitting late in life after decades of garment sewing, so I understand fit and structure and want to knit that way as well. So, if I have thought this through properly, I will follow the pattern for the right front, but what I will end up with is a left front, which is fine, I'll just repeat the process, knit the left front from the pattern and end up with a right front. Does that make sense? The sleeves and back should come out fine, they are symmetrical. My question for you is...should I knit from the chart going left to right, reading the chart from the opposite direction? Will the pattern repeats come out right if I do that? Or should I just follow the chart right to left as you do? I would appreciate any advice you could give? I am away from home (and the yarn I want to use) at the moment, I realize I could just knit a swatch both ways and see what happens which is what I usually do😅, but thought you might have some advice. Thank you!

      Hi there! I am left handed but knit continental….. I would imagine you could follow the chart from left to right instead of right to left? I’m not 100 percent sure but I think that’s what would make sense if you’re knitting backwards!

      @@AshleyLillisKnits thank you so much for replying! I tried to knit continental, but it was just way too tight. I throw, but everything is reversed. Thankfully the majority of the time everything works out as it should - my k2tog and SSKs lean the opposite way, as do my M1R & M1Ls. Sometimes I think I made it harder on myself by choosing this approach. I did try it with working needle in my right hand but it felt extremely awkward. I was told by a lady in a very snooty yarn shop that "there's no such thing as handedness in knitting" and that I should just learn to do it the "right" way. Well that just made me mad and I never went back there again. I think she just couldn't answer my questions and didn't want to admit she couldn't wrap her head around what I was doing so she chose to be condescending. In light of that, your reply means alot. Thanks again!

    You can also use baby shampoo for soaking because it is not harsh on yarns. It is also less expensive and more readily available.

    This is really helpful. Questions: Why do you have to wet or wash the gauge square? Do you then do the same thing to the finished sweater? Can you tell I’m a new knitter.

      @ashb5733 Год назад +2

      Many times yarn can “grow” once wet and since you will undoubtedly want to wash your garment at some point you’ll want to see how the yarn behaves so you’ll know the finished size. Also another REALLY important part of blocking is that it lets the yarn “bloom” (if the type of yarn you’re using does that), opens up lace work, and evens out stitches. A finished garment usually looks much better and lays nicer once blocked! Hope that helps!

    question, kind of new to knitting, but when you slip a stitch, do you do that knitwise or purlwise?
