Recorded both at his home studio at Ashcombe House, near Bath, and at London’s Townhouse Studios, Peter’s third self-titled album was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered a top 5 UK single in Games Without Frontiers and Peter’s first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer Biko. It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes.

Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
- The man is dead
The man is dead
When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja,
- The man is dead
The man is dead
You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flame begins to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja

I'm from Brazil and no matter where on planet Earth you are from, if you are against racism, social injustice and slavery, then you are my brother!
Hello brother ! Greatings from Belgium ! 👋
Bless you for standing with humanity.🇸🇪✝️🙏☮💚💛❤
I believe that I dont see colour I see a person
If a person is horrible it's not because his colour it's personitally
I'm totally against racism. Even here in the United States, which is the number one most racist country on earth.
I saw Peter Saturday night. He ended the show with “Biko”….what a powerful song and ode to memory. We all need to fight against any injustice. Anywhere. Any color. We all bleed red.
i saw him 10 years ago same thing, the entire audience fists in the air Peter listed out current day human rights violations -was so powerful

It's true
" You can blow out a candle but you can't blow out a fire . .. " I was blown away by this epic song when I first heard it 40 odd years ago and it still grips me to the core .
Remember the day so well,
Many nights in college, almost 40 years ago, I got stoned and fell asleep to this song.
I love that lyric
You should see it live, in person.
"Once you blow out the flame..... the wind make it higher"!
I came here today to honor the memory of Steven Biko. I've admire his courage and humanity since hearing this song in the late 80's. I cry each time I hear this song as I feel a personal connection as does Peter. The eyes of the world are watching now!
Well said.
I remember coming home and seeing the photo in the papers of that lad carrying the kid in his arms from Soweto and thinking about his pain and the greed and insanity of Apartheid.
Peter Gabriel should be honoured for this song.
bless you
🗣 *Left a firm impression as an 8 year old who had just moved to London in 1983!’*
Powerful song, powerful beautiful lyrics.
Things were going so well with Mandela in power.
Now tragically, the same old evil game begins again. The people and the colours change, but the human tragedy remains the same.
You cry each time you hear this song? Man up son
Peter Gabriel memorialized and honored Steve Biko for humanity in this beautiful, heartfelt and immensely touching song.
And yet we are still animals ,
😢
Iam here to honor the memory of Steven Biko.
You will never be forgotten.

When I was young I'm 60 now I read a book about biko I loved it
Things are different now I dont see color I just see a person
Don't you agree
I am from South Africa I was 7 when he died 11years later in the SA Defence Force I heard this song was banned for so many years. I thank my father for raising me that all men are equal regardless of you color, race belief and up brining. What an amazing song and artist.
+Lodi Cronje Respect to you Lodi

I don't understand what really determines your ways of living just by a color what are you gonna live by a color for the rest of your life no! You're no different from a Caucasian Asian Hispanic or African American at all we are all equal also Rest in peace Steven Biko you seemed like a great guy
Good father you have
At least Peter Gabriel is genius with his involvement in human rights unlike bob Geldof who goes on about raising money for the starving in ethophia which I get but is always mouthing off in the media.if he wanted to talk about charity why not pay royalties to band mates in the boomtown arts
I am white but would give up my life for Steven Beko because of his principles we all bleed the same colour
What about Martin Luther King
I totally agree
no u wouldnt, stop talking shit
U right segrigation is disintergration ov humanity
Any segrigation is disintergration of civilisation
Biko believed in the equality of all mankind and he was killed for that. We salute him for his bravery. He was true to his conscience.
Agree, we all should lear from Biko about to believe equality to all people in mankind
Amen !

Yes
Yes we all cry for Biko and all the injustice
One of the most epic songs against police brutality that the world has ever seen. Much respect to Peter Gabriel.
No it's Apartia against a man's color
Innertubez- Agreed.
These people were not policemen - they were murderous thugs disguised in a uniform they were unfit to wear.
This is not just police brutality, otherwise you underplay the fact that its state sponsored brutality under apartheid.
And now 40 years later we still have this problem. What a sad world
Just watched and was thinking the same thing.
Racist people can kiss my ass!!
It’s sooooo much better than it was then.
I was thinking the same thing let's just hope that in time things will change
@@creamydistortion Seriously! I’m soooo tired of it and those that perpetuate and persist with it. It’s sickening.
Those who do not know their history, are bound to repeat it. Sadly, this song is as relevant today, as it was then. Stephen Biko, you live through us, and we continue your fight! Peter Gabriel, you are a world treasure, and an inspiration.
Actually, a lot of people do not know anything about history, war and politics. That is why the patterns are on rewind for many hundred years.
@@Mrs20090515 on top of that, you have to keep in mind that most history people learn in school is of their own country.
I grew up in the American school system, granted, it was private School, but we didn't learn any South African history; we only learned the history that was "applicable to us."
Meaning, obviously American history, and some European age of exploration history.
While you could go under the argument "same ish, different toilet" this song is the first time I've ever heard the name.

This is one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. The lyrics are amazing and I absolutely love the bagpipes! RIP Steve Biko.
I've just reading a collection of Steve Biko's writing entitled "I Write What I Like." Very thought-provoking and interesting. Best read in a quiet place with no distractions or background noise.

I saw this movie with my father when I was in high school, and it changed my heart & vision for the meaning of life. I remember it was the first time I cried in front of my dad since I was a child. So be it! For the sake of humankind!
People who have sought peace in violent times, usually get gunned down. MLK was one that you first think of. Biko should be remembered for going against the grain for his country's sake in the throes of corruption. Still, racism is something that you're born into, doesn't belong here, but thrives. R.I.P. This part of history is ignored by many and is rarely ever mentioned in high school textbooks. You can't bring out the black's perspective if one unexperienced; misunderstood is writing.

Another commenter made the greatest observation: Hate killed Biko, but love keeps him alive. That would apply to all pacifists/humanitarians who were murdered working for peace/a better way.
His voice is amazing. This effortless surge of immeasurable strength and power.
His passion and anger are palatable. Thus, making the song align with your astute comment.

Where is my name
Today I am blessed. Bad emotional night, liquor store 10 am Sunday morning, not good. Fell upon this song that is part of my soul on RUclips once again. Listened, wept, lather rinse, repeat. This song was part of my youth. Chanted as one in unison with 35,000 of my friends, brothers and sisters until tears poured out of our eyes in a shared human experience unheard of today. Drinking, crying I decided to walk 100 yards to the warm waters of south Florida and stand in the ocean listening to this song 4 or 5 times. Multiculturalism all around me. A black man stood out to me. He mid 40s me late 50s. Explained to him I was having a emotional morning and told him what I was listening to and why. I asked him to Google it, listen to it and pass it on. He had it playing while he handed me some spiritual literature to read and learn. Come on people, it's 2021 our world is supposed to be a better place....... in a movement, a cause, you can blow out a candle, easy no problem. But, you can't blow out a fire, a bunch of candles. Cause once the flame begins to catch, the wind, you blowing, will blow it higher. Humanity, peace, freedom are those causes. Trump, white nationalists.....the opposite. Teach, your children well.....alcohol and Sunday mornings, not good. Be safe everyone
For all prisoners of conscience. Stephen Biko, September 1977. Thank you, Peter.
he died the year i was born.
Peter's "Love of humanity" always has touched me... What a "selfless" tribute....
I remember seeing Biko on tv when he was still alive. What a strong personality full of hope.
What a shock him being murdered was.
This song was important to get world support to help end Apartheid.
Therefore I'm truly shocked to read how some people react. Whatever is wrong now, in SA
is not Biko's doing, nor of the integrity Mandela brought to the stage, nor of their ideology.
.
Whatever corruption hurts SA today, is a new day and new case. It won't be solved by hate against a color or ideology. Power corrupts. All countries need leaders with integrity. And people like Biko and Mandela lived that. And for that they get songs made about them.
So you want change? Live a life that gets you songs made about you. And that only happens when you touch most of humanity in a way that shows humanity.

It's about the farthest thing you can get from underrated. Only youth or pure ignorance could make such a stupid comment. The tune helped turn the eyes of the WORLD on South Africa and was an anti apartheid anthem. How is that in any way shape or form considered "underrated"? That word is probably the # 1 misused word to describe thousands of songs on RUclips by people who no clue of music history. Google is your friend
@Brandon Moore….you're an idiot too then
I love PG - and this will become his ONLY song, in terms of what it says , what it has already achieved and what it might yet still achieve ... he won't do it - but he should re-release it ... and raise fresh awareness to the HORROR SHOW that still goes on in 2020 .... 43 years after the death of the great man SB
As one who was 16 when Steven died, this song was NOT under-rated at all, the western radio stations around the world didn't want to play it. There is a difference younguns.
So moving. May God have mercy.
Peter Gabriel - ever ahead of his time.
Powerful song about a great man Biko and by a great man Peter Gabriel. God bless everyone from Patrick
