It's hard to believe that we started our honey production way back in February, but that's when we began splitting our bees and growing our hives to achieve a honey harvest. Now, the time is right and the capped honey frames are being processed, thank you Jesus!
For those who would like to send me their honey label to go up on our newly decorated wall, here's the address you can send them:
    Mr. Ed
    75376 River Rd.
    St. Benedict, LA 70457
And for those who would like to contact me I can be reached at:
    oscelata@gmail.com
And finally, for those who would like to purchase some of our Abbee Honey, I'd be more than happy to send you some. The cost is $12.00 for a one pound, plastic bottle, and $10.00 for shipping. If you want more than one bottle, the shipping cost is still $10.00 for up to 2 bottles, but each bottle is still $12.00. As soon as I get your check, I will send it out. Make the check out to St. Joseph Abbey but send the letter to:
    Mr. Ed
    75376 River Rd.
    St. Benedict, La. 70457
If you'd like, I'll even sign the bottle. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all!

High 90's today, so came in and enjoyed your video when it was too hot to do much outside. (eastern Oregon). Your comments at the end remind me of Brother David Steindl-rast. I met him over 20 years ago at a workshop --- didn't know who he was at the time! Gratefulness, gratitude practice. Anyway, appreciate all the videos, and the underlying joy that comes through them. However, as you begin your journey, I would highly suggest you find a beekeeping club in your area and start attending the meetings. With the help of local beekeepers you will hit the ground running and very possibly find what you need to get you started. Thank you for watching, and I wish you all the best on your beekeeping adventures. God's peace.

Aloha Mr. Ed from San Diego,
Since moving from Hawaii to address my dear wife's health care needs, I am beeless, but not hopeless.
Africanized Honeybees have made it now as far north as Napa valley as of 2022(1994 they made it to San Diego) .
My wife has made a complete recovery from the deadly form of APL Leukemia.
Focus now is to help as much as I can for her daily needs and bees here won't fit that opportunity (yet).
If you were to group bees by attitude and not by race, list your findings please.
Even in Hawaii I found different groupings or attitudes ranging from so gentle to absolute monster meanness. Recent history on AHB's always seems to lean towards Meanness. Is that what you have found? Data on AHB seems too unscientific across the board. Totally uncontrollable in Arizona and Tameable and useful in California.
I'm hoping to find a new 'Normal', as to what a beekeeper is to expect from his bee yard.
    Your view please.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 дня назад +1

I'm happy to hear of your wife's recovery, thank you Jesus! As far as my views on bee temperament, it's simple:
I prize bees that have enough meanness to survive whatever attacks them...be it virus's, other insects and animals, and beekeepers. As I am very much a "hands off" beekeeper, most all of our hives display a certain degree of aggressiveness, but at the same time, they make a lot of honey for us. Now THAT'S what I call a good bee.
Great hearing from you again, and I know you won't be bee less for long. God's peace brother.
      Mr.Ed

In Hawaii, we had Mark’s Bee Haven, based in North Kohala , with 220 recovered wild hives across 40,000 acres of 6 climate zones, from sea level to 6,000 feet. The most productive hives were kept at 2 hotels of the Southwest side of Kohala’s Mesquite Honey Forest. These hives were captured there originally and brought back to North Kohala and were useful in your rainforest area but the other wild bees of the desert areas near the hotels would just redistributed themselves to the locations where we had previously captured bees. The hotels were fine and paid me for our service but the problem would remain, so after reaching my limits of how many hives we were able to care for ,I told the hotels them were always going to have a honeybee problem Or I would fit things by bringing back some of the same bees back and thereby removing the reason behind the Always Swarming Wild Bees of the productive honey Forest area swarming to the hotels grounds. The hotels were at first shocked, saying,’ we don’t want bees, our guests are being stung. We want less bees…
After explaining why they had a honeybee problem, I told them the nectar sources of the Mesquite trees was the reason and by bringing back a controlled amount of bees in hives, we could stop the swarming of the wild hives outside of the hotels areas. They thought about it and said ,’Ok, you have 3 months to test out your ‘Control Method’ and if it doesn’t work you will remove your hives from the hotel grounds. I agreed.
After just one month, the hotels called back and said they hadn’t had a single honeybee problem on their grounds and they were very happy to let us continue.
Before the Control Project: no less than 5 big swarming events monthly to hotel guest areas.
Once control was implemented: not one event.
These 20 control hives had one real need: harvest honey every 2 weeks, all year long or swarming would start again.
No problem. Harvesting the 1200 pounds every 2 weeks, my wife Sharon, had it sold as quickly as I bottled it to 17 stores and 2 farmers markets (and sold at a price we set for the Pure Raw Local market.

Do you know how they make powdered honey? And does the powdered have the same or nearly the same nutrition? I know that freeze drying retains over 90% of the nutrition of the things that are placed in the process. I don't know who to ask so if you can site some websites with the info so I can let some others know, I would be very grateful.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 дня назад

I never even knew there was such a thing called "powdered honey." However, what I believe is if the physical properties of a substance has been altered and then reinstituted, it most certainly has lost some of it's original qualities, and for a fact that I do know, if honey is heated above 114 degrees, the active particles that give honey it's many health benefits begin dying off. Once the honey has become heated to the point of pasteurization, it health benefits are gone...but it still tastes good. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Judy.

@@JeffHorchoff if you or Der from Amazon they sell powdered honey. It is sold at Winco and Walmart sometimes. I think it is freeze dried but not sure. For a long time it was exclusively used in supplements and buying it for home use was difficult. Then the doomsday preppers realized that it is lighter and easier to store so now it is a mainstream product. The reason I know that much was I tried to find it for years before it finally got put on home consumer platforms. It doesn't have the flavor of bottled honey but for cooking it is great. But as you said the heath benefits probably are diminished through baking.
Oh well, I will continue to wonder and look when I can to find my answers.
Blessings to you and your wife ❤️
