Ok being present is important. How does formal meditation makes us more present. What is the cause effect relationship?

I think you want this teacher to answer you but I will repeat what my teacher told me that I found thought provoking.
First, when we sit very quietly and try to put all thought out of our mind and just listen to the sounds in the moment, like breathing, a bird chirping, the refrigerator kicking on, thoughts will still arise, no matter how hard we try to stop them.
Here is where you really pay attention to every thought but my teacher said just, "Don't invite them in for tea".
Consider your thoughts to be like spam email or a door to door salesman trying to sell you something when you are busy.
Acknowledge the thought because what you think is your essence. Be kind to every thought like you would be kind to a pushy sales person but tell the thought. "Hey thanks for stopping by but can you come back later when I am not meditating?"
"Listen briefly but control it kindly. If you are mean to the thought and slam the door, the thought will pound harder and go to all the windows so be kind to yourself and your thoughts."
Noticing what you think about when you empty the mind of all thought is the real you. Don't fight it or deny the thought but don't let the thought take over your life.
Now our running joke is "I'm thinking such and such but I'm not inviting it in for tea."
Sometimes I have a thought, I DO want to invite for tea like "How can I be kinder to my friend who is tired and frustrated?
That is when we send goodness to people and those wishes will come to us. What we wish for others becomes our own.
I still have beginner's mind on this do I keep my mind very still as a disipline and this method works well for me.
In Japanese, this level of meditation is call shikantaza or "just sitting".
Some people count their breaths to gain control of their thoughts but there are several ways to meditate.
I am not a teacher but that is what my teacher told me and it works wonders for me to clear worrysome and obsessive thoughts

you raise a good question. this whole nondual philosophy and zen tradition seems to try to dissolve the i, self as some practical tool but a system may fail that maybe for some this is counterproductive. what if some of us are long ago awakened and know the deal and the dissoving i just gets in our way.@@LivingAdhd
