More series from Nizzahon is great. Just make sure you're not overworking yourself with the twice weekly top 10s and now this series + the history channel. But I'm excited to see this series bloom!
Only time we really saw Tron back then was in Mono-Red Burn Decks. A lot of players used Urza's, but they really shined in Burn Decks. Nowadays, they can be used in many ways, but back then, it just wasn't common.
I've known MTG for like 15 years or so, but never been too familiar with it cause I've never actually collected any cards. Recently with MTGA, that I've been playing for the last 3 years or so, I've managed to get a decent virtual collection without spending much, even if I'm not that good or competitive at the game, I have my fun with it. This historic series, the banned cards history and the top 10s have been fascinating to me. Thanks for thanking your time to share that much knowledge with us, Nizzahon!
Tron was also helped out a lot by the nerfing of land destruction. When the Urza lands debuted land destruction cards included such things as Strip Mine and its slightly more fair cousin Wasteland, and even humble Stone Rain puts most current land destruction to shame.
The Tooth and Nail (and its relative/descendant, Elf and Nail) decks were better than one might think at just overpowering land destruction with ramp. It wasn't a GOOD matchup, but it wasn't unwinnable. And that was in a format with Stone Rain and Molten Rain both legal, so you could make a very scary Ponza deck in Standard. The deck was extremely annoying to play against as it often felt like you were playing Whac-A-Mole with their Tron availability.
@@DarklordZagarna Agreed, but it's worth noting that the era of Tooth and Nail was one of the first eras where searching up a land other than a forest was heavily supported, and that it was also was post Onslaught Block, the first era with truly big high mana threats. Tooth and Nail is an example of that sort of high mana threat, but it's worth noting that Tooth and Nail only really works because it has big creatures without drawbacks to find. There was not nearly as much value in trying to slap down something like Force of Nature or Lord of the Pit. Likewise, the conversion of Tron to a single focus ramp/aggro deck coincides with the first era of single card hard to answer win cons like the Eldrazi. Before that time, it would have been considered busted to print something that was a fast clock, and hard to answer, and didn't have a crippling downside.

Also nerfing land destruction isn't just a matter of pulling land destruction cards out of the format - it also involves improving land search and pulling it out of the graveyard. The latter got so good with Life from the Loam that land destruction, as a strategy, is pretty much dead these days.
These videos are fantastic so far. I am a very casual magic player who never really got into the history of magic decks and it has been great to finally learn what you mean during the Top10 videos! I'll keep looking forward to these great videos.
Tron is now widely hated, but the original Extended version has a special place in my heart. I played both Izzetron and Simictron and had a blast with both. Simic was quite hard to pilot because you had to be careful using Moment's Peace. I hope you cover two of my favorite decks ever sometime: the Rock and Assault Loam.
I thought it's about assembling Urza's Throne, as in get all lands from his kingdom and he gets to sit on a throne. Keep in mind I knew next to nothing about MTG lore at the time
My favorite tron decks was during Mirrodin block in the short time when Tron + Tooth and Nail were both legal. It was super fun to Tooth and Nail for Mephidross Vampire/Triskellion and also had access to Kiki Jiki Mirror Breaker shenanigans. It was also crazy because Affinity was so powerful that you ended up running 4x maindeck oxidize in the deck and more artifact hate in the sideboard.

Agreed. A player that isn't familiar with the game from 1994 to 2004 might wonder why such obviously powerful cards didn't make a bigger splash in a competitive environment.
Actually, Eldrazi Tron took off because of Eye of Ugin + cheap eldrazi creatures (an unintended interaction due to the dev team having no memory) and got Eye of Ugin banned.
One of my favorite Magic RUclips channels is Rhystic Studies as his videos really dive into the history of Magic and this gets me a little on that level. Looking forward to more videos like this.

I like this series a lot. One suggestion, it would be cool if you could talk ajust how meta things affected the deck. A bit of "why" to go along with "how" the deck evolved. Two examples for Tron would be how it didn't exist at the start of modern because 12 Post pushed them out until Cloudpost got banned and how Eldrazi Tron decks came about as a response to Eye of Ugin getting banned.
I played a lot at Grand Prix events from 2004-2007 and I loved tron back then. In extended I played the uG version because moments peace was so so good.
This series is really interesting. I had heard about Tooth and Nail tron and its colorless uses before but I didn't know it was also used for big UR X spells.
Minor CORRECTION, T&N entwined lets you search your library for 2 creature cards and put them into your hand. Then you can put up two creatures from your hand into play. So doesn't have to be what you searched for. Was something I did quite a few times 2005/2006.
In 2007 Extended was the last 6-8 blocks, rotating every three years until Modern was introduced, which is when Extended was changed to be the last 4 blocks.
Ok so this might be word to say but... you have a voice that is almost but not quite monotone... its engaging enough to keep my interest when I'm actively watching and consistent enough I can find it soothing and fall asleep to! Not gonna lie sometimes i turn on autoplay and have your videos play all night and it helps me sleep... Kinda ackward to admit but... I really enjoy the content and you as a creator
@12:54: Eldrazi Tron was considered "bad Tron" from 2017-2019, for the most part. The Green variant was far more popular and successful, definitely the dominant Tron deck. The printing of Karn TCG changed that as it gave E-Tron a way to have a relevant sideboard (which Green Tron had because of green cards) and a more successful midrange plan. Now it's the more successful of the two by a long stretch, but that's only after War of the Spark.

I feel like it would have been worth even just a few seconds spent talking about what a huge impact Tron having a second expensive game winning planeswalker in Ugin as I rarely see a Tron list these days without atleast one, but I look forward to seeing more of these regardless
4:50 that finisher seems awful i know you got a lot of mana laying around but paying 10 for a 1/1 flyer with deal 3 or even 7 for a 4/4 flyer and then paying 3 to put it back in your libary and then spending a draw to get it back; i feel like im missing some obvious combo tho so maybe somone can enlighten me ?
I think the basic combo is that the opponent had run out of gas by now so the flier could get in. Also, the inevitability of it returning again and again would have been a problem
The "combo" is that you can use of one of the tokens to kill triskelavus itself, then recur it with academy ruins. It may not look that powerfull, but not many decks can beat a triskelavus every turn until the end of the game. Also keep in mind that this was a standard deck, there were not many alternatives. Edit: Back then the rules were also different and damage still used the stack, so each token could block and shoot killing x/2's which makes triskelavus way better than it is in nowadays.

Its like Krark Clan Ironworks not everyone was playing it but the % of few players That did had great results. Well, it was originally an 80s cartoon, and when the name "Tron" was first coined for the urza lands, that's what people were referring too. Not a future reboot. Haha
I didn't "forget" about it, per se, I just left out a few archetypes that only had very minimal success and didn't really have a major impact on the trajectory of tron decks. Good like finding a mono-Red tron deck that Top 8'd a premiere event.
That's like saying removal spells should be included on a discard list because they both result in your opponent losing cards. They could both appear on a 'card disadvantage' list sure, and both Tron and Cloudpost could appear in a 'Big Mana decks' video, but this video is not that; it is a video about Tron.

The video could have been about the same length again if you included all the different pauper tron decks - at least four distinct variations I can think of that were at least somewhat competitive. Generally a very different strategy than the haymaker-focused modern tron decks - more like the blue-white early standard tron decks.
Nope! I didn't think it necessary to name every Tron variant ever, only the ones that were significant for their innovations and/or highly successful, and Mono-U Tron doesn't really fit the bill for me.
"Tron wasn't played until 8th Edition." Well, it was but the Tron lands were a classic trap for new players in those early days. If you had them in your deck, it was clear you were new or didn't know what you were doing (since there was I think 0 ways to search up a non-basic in those days, until Crop Rotation). So I guess you can say "Good players didn't play them until 8th Edition." :p

A bit disappointed blue tron was not mentioned. And as a monoblue fan, I hope for merfolk soon, as some variant was played in earliest days of magic.

When akroma came out there was a mono white control with her, wrath's, akroma's vengeance, Tron lands, the white decree... Deck was good

Nope. I focus on the premiere play formats, and Pauper isn't one of those.
The video could have been about the same length again if you included all the different pauper tron decks - at least four distinct variations I can think of that were at least somewhat competitive. Generally a very different strategy than the haymaker-focused modern tron decks - more like the blue-white early standard tron decks.
Blue Tron didn't even get a mention...
Nope! I didn't think it necessary to name every Tron variant ever, only the ones that were significant for their innovations and/or highly successful, and Mono-U Tron doesn't really fit the bill for me.

"Tron wasn't played until 8th Edition." Well, it was but the Tron lands were a classic trap for new players in those early days. If you had them in your deck, it was clear you were new or didn't know what you were doing (since there was I think 0 ways to search up a non-basic in those days, until Crop Rotation). So I guess you can say "Good players didn't play them until 8th Edition." :p
When I say "wasn't played" I mean "at the highest level of competition"
