My favorite scene was when the coach noticed how the team was in withering awe of the massive state championship stadium, and he reduced it to the fundamentals by having them measure the height of the hoop...the exact same height of the hoop in their home gym...and that was all that mattered.

Thanks for shining a light on this nearly perfect film! I remember back then seeing Dennis Hopper on an Entertainment TV show; him watching the live Oscar nomination announcements at his home. He looked more confused than pleased. "Blue Velvet" had come out in '86 as well and EVERYONE thought he could get nominated for his portrayal of Frank Booth. I agree with the academy- his acting was much more resonant and nuanced in "Hoosiers".

He was a teen in the late fifties and one of the top players in the state of Ohio. What got him most was seeing the players playing at The Butler Field house on the type of court he used to play on. I am not a sports fan and even this film ranks high on my list. Absolutely inspiring. That score and the actual Indiana scenery makes this movie.

Because many of my friends were in this movie, I was invited to attend the first ever showing of the movie in it's finished cut. The official premier was later that evening. Thirty seconds in I turned to one of my friends (Dave Casey, second from the left at 2:24) and said, "I like this already." I spent most of my life in Indiana, was in attendance at the State Finals in Hinkle Fieldhouse, the building use to shoot the State Final scene, when my high school played for the championship in 1967 (we lost the final game), and covered many basketball high school basketball games as a sports writer and photographer, and many state finals as the photographer for the state high school athletic association for 20 years. While some aspects of the tournament were not included in this story, the feel of high school basketball in Indiana, and how the game was played back then, is spot on. It took about eight years to get my second wife to agree to watch this movie with me. After that, every year she insisted we watch it again. I have the two DVD collectors edition of this, which includes deleted scenes. There were some scenes deleted to reduce running time from just under three hours, that really do help the tell the full story, particularly more about the Barbara Hershey part and what became of her character.

Chris, grew up in the Director's hometown. I'm a bit younger than him, but family's well known. His father was a very good photographer and had a studio for many years that was a staple of the community. Being from there and growing up there, I can tell what is true. Hoosiers care very much about high school basketball. This is not a generalization it Was and to a lesser Is a religion.
Since they introduced Class systems to sports there by population, the State Tournament has lost some of it's luster. But the period of the movies setting, when the film was made, and when I went to High School, it was a free-for-all. Just getting out of Sectional, for a small school was a Huge deal. This movie is the most realistic basketball non-documemtary film I have ever seen. It's depiction of Indiana small community life is absolutely on point. We Hoosiers Cherish this movie with a sense of place and Pride probably matched by no other. Thanks for the reveiw, and folks, if want want to see a movie about Indiana as real as sugar cream pie, this is it. Small caveat, one of the player actors was one of my good friend's brother, and one of the refs his father and my Junior High Basketball coach, and a great example for us players. Had a major positive influence on my life, and I'll never forget him. Please, enjoy this film.

This movie is soooo good! I bought the DVD back in 2004 when I was in the army and barely in my 20's. It moved me as much then as it does now, and the special features section contained lots of cool interviews with my favorite being the director explaining just how goddamn hard that final, winning shot was to film. The kid couldn't make it for shit, he missed over and over and over. and Gene Hackman was sending his assistant over to suggest moving closer to the basket. The director felt it was a bad idea and that it would any remaining confidence the young actor had left at that point. So boom, the kid finally makes it, and the director had zoned out a bit and forgot to actually ensure everyone knew what to do if the kid did, in fact, actually make the shot! Fortunately, everyone did what was needed and what we see in the movie is everyone basically genuinely reacting when they rush the kid to life him up in celebration. I mean, you couldn't ask for things to play out any more heartwarming than this!

For years my grandpa was Dennis Hopper’s right hand man. In fact, my dad’s godfather is Dennis. I was able to meet him a few times when I was too young to remember, but every once in a while I’ll sit down with my grandpa and watch some of Dennis’s best movies. Easy rider, blue velvet, Hoosiers, true romance. My grandpa, a filmmaker himself, made a documentary about his time with Dennis called “Along for the Ride.” That documentary cemented Dennis as a key figure of my family. I would give anything to meet Dennis again just for a day.

Also me: "Honey, I have a new movie for us to watch..."

@@c.h.y - just watched it tonight! It was a good movie, worth my time. It didn't make me cry. ;) It was very much an 80s movie, and it felt "dated", but if I had seen it at the time it probably would have seemed totally normal so I don't mean that in a bad way. I can easily see how someone who saw it in their childhood or teenage years would identify heavily with it. The soundtrack was surprisingly "synth-y" for a Goldsmith score. Gene Hackman is one of my all-time favorite actors so it was a treat to watch something "new" from him. The sports footage, especially in the finale, was impressive. I agree with Chris about the romance; I wish instead it had spent a little more time getting to know the players. I love how in Remember The Titans you really get to know the players in lots of little ways, and I didn't find that here. But, this was clearly Hackman's movie, he carries it on his back, whereas RTT is more ensemble-based, and I was invested in the characters from start to finish. Nice work from Dennis Hopper. Thumbs up!

I'm so glad you reviewed this Chris, I love this movie! I would give this a A- only because they use the same 15 shots over and over again for the basketball action. As a basketball fan this drove me nuts, I also wished they could have used actors who actually knew how to play basketball. On a minor note looking at this with 2021 glasses, it funny that at the end, the enter white Hoosiers team had to beat the all black starting line-up to win the state championship!
