A useful thing for restaurants that have only qr menus is other restaurants.
Haha! I find that they usually have paper menus now if you ask. Interesting how QR codes made a comeback from the early 2000s.
Subscribed 👍 As I'm completely new to Ubuntu Touch (loaded yesterday) I found this post really useful. I'm off to check your other videos as I want to hide the sidebar on the home screen, but can't find out how to do it anywhere else. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for subscribing :) You can try this alternative launcher to hide the sidebar though maybe not exactly what you want: open-store.io/app/qmllaunch.mateo-salta
open-store.io/app/ut-tweak-tool.sverzegnassi , also allows you to adjust the size of things, but not completely hide the sidebar. Let me know if any of those help.
@@CyberPunkEdu Thanks for the information, I'll go and give that a go. 👍
@@gilliebrand I'm not sure if you were able to find what you were looking for. It seems those apps were only for Xenial (16.04). There was mention of this "showdesktop" app in the UBports telegram group: t.me/ubports/378588
I'm not sure if this one is for Focal (20.04) or not. But the latest code shows that it is compatible: github.com/mateosalta/showdesktop
Is there a nightlight feature in Ubuntu touch base on Ubuntu 20.04? Example; Redshift
The thing im excited for is the future customization, I know it will be in this OS eventually. That's one thing I love about linux on desktop; you can make it look and behave just how you want it to.
Yes, customization is nice. So far there are a few customized launchers: open-store.io/app/launchermodular.ubuntouchfr
It's safe to say this is about 10 years late and there is a reason why it has not evolved past this, nor it ever will
@@lilmoris1 Indeed the catch-up game for Ubuntu Touch is a struggle. The same for any new mobile OS at this point, but with enough attention it might have some hope of getting picked up by a bigger player.
@@lilmoris1 To be more specific, I have more freedom to what is on the phone. Ubuntu is already ahead in that regard. You don't have 5 different versions of the same app that all do the same thing. For sure though Ubuntu Is behind in a ton of regards.
I don't think that would be a focus in UT though. Sure there would be customization options here and there but don't expect much especially in the level of KDE Plasma. In a sense you can customize as much as you want but that would involve modifying the codes. For example, I have personal hacks for Lomiri because you can modify QML files directly on the device 😄
Looking forward to using this OS on my phone one day. Can it work with any phone or do you need a certain phone to run it?
Thanks for the comment. Any of these devices will work devices.ubuntu-touch.io/ . If you do get one, then make sure that the bootloader can be unlocked (OEM Unlock).
Nice video!
How does it feel using UT on 3a? Can UT have same experience like Android on daily usage (chats, call, browsing, and mobile bank)?
I really want to install it on my 3a but still a bit afraid to leave android.
Thanks for the comment. The experience is quite different from Android. The approach to mobile is free software and privacy in its own ecosystem. It is not officially supported by major develpment companies. You can use "essentials" like call, sms, use chats like Telegram, Signal, and Matrix clients. The apps function differently, and the whole system is different. There are no official banking apps. If you have a spare device, then I suggest trying UT on that first.
Can ubuntu touch have a back button like android? Right now is it still on the left hand top corner?
Right now there isn't the option to do that. Back button is built in individual apps, but not into the system. However, it looks like someone can modify the launcher. Here is an example open-store.io/app/uhome.pavelprosto
Hey! thank you for the detailed review 😊. Would you mind sharing the background music you used in the video? It sounds really good
Hey! Thanks for the kind comments, and I'm glad you liked the music. It's something I created myself, so I'll have to get the file on another computer. I'll reply again with it posted for download a bit later.
Here's the music track: soundcloud.com/taetano/nuna
@@CyberPunkEdu Thanks again! I have been listening to this non stop makes me feel very nostalgic for some reason 😄
@@gintokisakata9148 :) maybe I was inspired by some old video game music. It just came to me while creating in LMMS. I'm glad that you enjoy it.
Do you know whether Zerotier, KDEConnect and Keepass work on Ubuntu Phone?
Pixel 3a devices are cheap these days, I'd love to try it myself.
Sorry for the late reply. Zerotier and KDEConnect are not supported right now, but there is a keepass app: open-store.io/app/keepass.davidv.dev
im looking forward for future releases too as you said, I HAVE ONE QUESTION, is there a file manager in ubuntu touch? And how is the root folder layout ? IS IT LIKE IN desktop linux ? where the layout starts with / and you have directories like boot, etc dev home media mnt opt proc run usr, you know the normal directories in linux , are those present too?, or does it use a folder layout like a normal android, with / acct , apex , firmware, config , data/data , sd card, dev , efs directories , and so on? One thing i look forward is a better organized root folder layout , like the one Debian or Ubuntu has.
Thanks for the comment. The file management is just like Ubuntu desktop. So if you use terminal then you can see the layout is the same. However, a typical mobile user will only interact with the Home folder where the user data is stored. There is a File Manager app installed by default: open-store.io/app/filemanager.ubports
@@CyberPunkEdu I read that those root folders are read-only? Can they become read-write by user choice? Is there a way to edit the files in there ? lets say i wanna edit my wpa_supplicant.conf file, located in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
oor in android its located in /data/misc/wifi or sometimes in /system/etc/wifi depending on the OS.
I-d like to perhaps edit this file. Or some other file is it doable? Im in, the fact that you tell me that the directory layout is similar, i really wanna try it, but is it editable? thats an important question hahah. I see myself enjoying the OS , if root works perfectly, editing files, etc. But I also see myself feeling disappointed and uninstalling the OS , if nothing works hahahah
@@NoEnfo You are right in that there are some restrctions by default to prevent less advanced users from messing things up, but you can make everything writable. Still no gurantee that things won't break.
If you have a spare device then it is worth trying to see if you like it, but it will definitely be a different experience from Android and from desktop GNU/Linux distributions.
The terminal command to make root writable is:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /
Nice overview, Thanks. I have one question though, can the containerized android run any android app such as banking apps? Because if that is so, then I can totally see this being a daily driver easily! I've been wanting to get rid of my android phone in favor of Ubuntu Touch but I haven't been able to because I have android apps that I absolutely need.
Hello, thanks for your comment. It would depend on which banking app. I have used my banking apps on lineageos without gapps and had no problems. Waydroid is running LineageOS in the container, so it would work the same, but some banking apps are much more picky. In that case, some extra modules need to be installed, but as of yet, I haven't been able to do so in waydroid.
TL;DR test out the app in lineage and it should also work in waydroid.
highly excited to get a pixel 3a to get on ubuntu touch
Please let me know how it goes :)
@@CyberPunkEdu well so far it is going ok minor teething issues like inability to make libertine work but i like it so far
@@CyberPunkEdu i would also love to make dark mode work but ut tweaks doesnt work on my phone
@@KalebsRevenge Thanks for the update. Does this app work for you? open-store.io/app/themeswitch.danfro
Otherwise you may be able to manually edit to change the theme to "Suru Dark" in "/home/phablet/.config/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/theme.ini"
@@CyberPunkEdu I eventually came across thiss myself but actually came across a fatal flaw text messaging wasn't working. Many OS flashes later i stumbled across RCS messaging and disabled it maybe consider putting something in the description cause this drove me insane for hours.
Does VoLTE work yet for this device? I'm assuming it doesn't.
It is still a work in progress (forums.ubports.com/topic/7536/volte-voice-over-long-term-evolution/26), but I did read that some people on OnePlus devices had some functionality.
How reliable is Waydroid in Ubuntu touch at the moment? can it run banking apps which rely on GAPPS?
Although waydroid is still in early development, I was able to install and run my banking apps. There is an option to install GAPPS in waydroid. As long as it isn't "rooted" it shouldn't complain. As for reliability, I wouldn't do any serious work in waydroid as it crashes often.
It is not support VoLTE in pixel 3a, so can't receive calls, but somehow I can make calls. MMS I used Mint mobile setting somehow it works only over cellular data
You may have to set up the APN manually (forums.ubports.com/topic/5866/mms-issues?_=1704563950127&lang=en-US). I haven't used must mms so I haven't tested it myself yet. But I needed to setup the APN for mobile data.
How i can install Ubuntu touch on my pixel3a xl?
It should be the same process as installing on a pixel 3a ruclips.net/video/CdNGSdYCaDY/видео.html , but different rom for downgrading.
Can't wait to try out Ubuntu Touch on my Redmi Note 9 Pro which should be pretty much compatible. I just have to wait 7 days before I'll be able to unlock my bootloader, because Xiaomi just want me to stay and to profit from ads in MIUI :)
That's an interesting comment about Xiaomi unlock delays. Thanks for letting us know. I hope you are about to use and enjoy Ubuntu Touch.
You are better off switching to HavocOS instead of this and bricking your Xiaomi
@@lilmoris1 Not really sure why it would brick it when it's a supported device :D I installed Ubuntu Touch on Friday and it's working fine since then.
@@lilmoris1 What's the appeal of HavocOS specifically? Why not LineageOS or something else
@@CyberPunkEdu Lineage is boring, just like pure Android
I know this is a 3a but do you know if this works on a 3a xl?
Yes, the ubports installer supports both 3a and 3a XL. There might be slight variances but it should work as long as the bootloader is unlockable. devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/sargo
How's battery life and storage usage
Battery life is not great. It lasts about a day depending on the physical battery quality. Storage is just about the same as on Android.
Does external monitor works too? Great video!
Thanks for the comment :) Yes, external display works on Pixel 3a but still a work in progress. See here: ruclips.net/video/ValkTii8KLg/видео.html
can we use whatsapp with google drive backup
If you use whatsapp in waydroid you can. It runs a the android app. But not natively on ubuntu touch.
Even my Ubuntu touch channel is testing only. I works fine now. And I don't need to enter my APN for my sim. When I insert my sim it automatically detect.
Btw I use version 0.10.0 on ubport installer the latest
Oh that's good. Thanks for letting us know. It may depend on the mobile provider, but glad that it works for you.
Thank you for the good information. I recently installed Ubuntu touch 20.04 on my pixel 3a. and I installed Blender in Ubuntu touch 20.04, but it didn't work properly. Is there any way to run Blender properly in Ubuntu touch ?
Thanks for the comment. The proper way to install Blender on Ubuntu Touch would be through Libertine. I'm not sure how well it would perform, but someone did it here: forums.ubports.com/topic/5063/running-blender-on-a-phone/6?_=1689694815957&lang=en-US
@@CyberPunkEdu Thanks for your comment. I'll try again.
@@hmj8330 You're welcome. If you have the time, please let me know how it goes. I will try to do a Libertine video sometime when I can.
@@CyberPunkEdu After several attempts, Blender was run on Ubuntu Touch 16. Libertine execution on Ubuntu Touch 20 seems to be a little problem. Thanks for your advice.
@@hmj8330 I'm glad you got it to work, and thanks for letting me know about libertine on 20.04 vs 16.04
One of the major things that's been giving me pause to running UTouch as my daily driver is losing out on Android Auto.. I'll assume it's not working on Waydroid - correct?
I haven't tried to use Android Auto in Waydroid, but Waydroid isn't very reliable and could crash frequently if it did work. If that's the only thing holding you back, you could use an old phone just for android auto and connect it to your primary phone hotspot.
@@CyberPunkEdu Thanks - sorry for the late reply to your comment - I pulled the trigger and grabbed a 3a yesterday .. surprisingly quick and easy to flash UT and to get up and running. Thanks for this detailed guide -- I used it to find the fingerprint settings, now it's much more convenient. I'll test Waydroid more, although I didn't get the prompt to install GApps when I got it running!
I'm now researching into KDE Connect on UT, I think it's the only thing I'm missing from my current Android config.
I have a question does the gps work on you. I mean it detects the realtime location?
Yes, GPS works. But it takes a LONG time for it to sync at the beginning. 10 minutes or more sometimes.
is it possible to run winebox and install windows apps?
The short answer is not effectively, but here are more details forums.ubports.com/topic/4173/box86-wine-on-ubuntu-touch?_=1680488910159&lang=en-US
@@CyberPunkEdu thanks for replying!
Is it work python and nodejs and reactjs and java and c and C++ and which versions by default here
python3 and python3.8 are installed by default. The others I couldn't find in system.
@@CyberPunkEdu how many hours of phone backup.
@@narayanaraju5204 Do you mean battery life? I get about a day, but my pixe 3a is old and the battery is weak. I don't think there is a backup function.
Does it still not have a viable email client?
The only real email client right now is Dekko (open-store.io/app/dekko2.dekkoproject). It works, but still a work in progress. Thankfully it does have active development and has made improvements.
Redmi Note 9 merlin?
Note 9 (Merlin) is in the Ubuntu Touch installer. It should work with waydroid as well.
Good video but what is the song called?

hi, how to install version 20.04? i only got version 16
You will need the latest version of the ubports installer, and then choose 20.04 during the installation. I don't think there is a way to update via the phone itself yet.
@@CyberPunkEdu i dont see versions more than 16..
@@Blank-es9cgOh it depends on the device you are using. Pixel 3a has a 20.04 port, which device do you have?
@@CyberPunkEdu xiaomi redmi 9 prime sir,
@@Blank-es9cg I see. Sorry, you are right, it looks like there is no 20.04 for xiami redmi 9 prime yet. Some devices will get it later than others. It depends on the maintainer for that device.
That google play store is working?
Yes, google play store works in Waydroid. I tend to use Aurora store for app installation otherwise.
Chatgpt says in Ubuntu touch base on 20.04. have a redshift feature
Sorry redshift is not available on ubuntu touch. It is available on desktop Ubuntu. The output from chatgpt is what looks like Ubuntu desktop.
I can use Ubuntu touch with a cell phone with Android 13, my device is a Samsung Galaxy S20 fe with the Exynos 990 processor
I think only these devices can be used right now : devices.ubuntu-touch.io/ . Usually you need to be on Android 9.
@@CyberPunkEdu But I can't downgrade the android version?
@@leoniltoelpedonxd5873I'm not familiar with the Galaxy S20. Technically you should be able to downgrade, but the device still doesn't have a port for Ubuntu Touch yet :(
We are not interested on Ubuntu touch as this OS is still lagging to develop 4g lte, volte network and 5g network is a dream. This OS supports only 2g or 3g network which are no use for mobile communication now a days. Maximum countries are communicating with 4g/5g network.
Thanks for the information. Ubuntu Touch works 4G/LTE right now for me and others. But 5g or Volte is still missing. It is difficult to catch up, but hopefully, it will.
