    An example from the south of USA : "I wish I was in Dixie. Hooray, Hooray!" (But with a preterit instead of PP.)

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  13 дней назад

      Yes, that's something people say. 👍
      "I wish I were in Dixie" is actually the grammatically correct choice here, though many people use "was" in casual speech. In formal English, "were" is preferred in this type of "wish" or hypothetical statement.
      Here's why: when expressing wishes about something unreal, hypothetical, or contrary to fact, English uses the subjunctive mood. This mood calls for "were" rather than "was" with all subjects (I, he, she, it, etc.). So, grammatically speaking, "I wish I were in Dixie" is the correct form, as it implies a hypothetical or unreal situation.
      In everyday conversation, however, people often say "I wish I was," and it’s commonly understood. But for formal writing or when teaching ESL students about correct subjunctive usage, it’s best to stick with "were."

    • @PARADOXE56
      @PARADOXE56 13 дней назад

      @@englishspeaking360 How great is the answer! Thank you. So I change my remark: we can see a subjective form, but not a PP. Frankly I'd prefer, but is it a fifth form, or am I out of the today scope? If I were more litterate, I'd be able to conclude...

    Hi there, I have a question for you , in Bulgaria we have a saying that I translated as : When I was doing this , you were walking under the table ! Meaning I'm better, I'm more experinced etc. I used continuous tense , does it sound correct? Can I say. When I did this , you walked under the table and in english do you have idiom meaning same thing? Thank you in advance
    Regards

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  10 дней назад

      Your translation and use of the continuous tense make sense in English, but a slight adjustment might make it sound more natural. For example, you could say:
      > "When I was doing this, you were still crawling under the table!"
      In English, a similar idiom to express experience or seniority is:
      "I was doing this when you were still in diapers." (This implies that you've been doing something since before the other person was old enough to understand it.)
      Or you could say:
      "I've been doing this longer than you've been around."
      These convey the idea of having more experience in a way that's commonly understood in English.

    • @hristov71
      @hristov71 9 дней назад

      @@englishspeaking360 I deeply appreciate your explanation, if I use past simple, "When I did this you walked under the table" , why isn't it appropriate, where is the mistake? Or it sounds like just past actions with no meaning. Would you clarify this,please, I know all structures, I just can't think in english
      Regards

  • @baharrr1997
    @baharrr1997 13 дней назад +1

    I have a question. If I mean now, not about a past situation. Should I say "I wish, I don't work today"? Please, help me to understand it.

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  11 дней назад

      If you're at work now and you want to express that you would prefer not to be working, the correct choice is:
      "I wish I didn't work today."
      This phrasing uses the past simple tense ("didn't") to express a present regret or wish about a current situation, which is common with the verb wish when we talk about things we would like to be different right now.
      The phrase "I wish I don't work today" is incorrect in this context because with wish for present situations, we typically use the past tense form to show that it’s a hypothetical desire.

    Sir, if he had time, he would see us. For if sentence, can it be negative? If so, how? 🤔

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  11 дней назад

      Hello! To make this sentence negative, you can simply add "not" after "would." The result is:
      "If he had time, he would not see us."
      This implies that even if he had time, he still wouldn’t choose to see us.
      However, if you want to indicate that he doesn't have time and, therefore, cannot see us, you could also use the following:
      "If he didn’t have time, he wouldn’t see us."
      This form implies a hypothetical scenario in which his lack of time would prevent him from seeing us.

    Sir, goooood morning! It's 8:30 in Taiwan. I have a question. That's rich can be used in a positive way? For instance, A: I have to hire 5 people to clean my mansion for 5 hours. B: That's rich. How about this? A:The speaker's speaking is quite amazing. B:He is a rich professor, or what he said is rich. Is it OK? By the way, yesterday I had a conversation with my co-worker, and she said he was white. I definitely know what she meant. She described the boy's skin was fair. You know what, as I heard it, it was quite funny. Maybe both of us are Asian, that's why I could get her immediately. For native speakers, they could be confused for a sec. 😂

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  7 дней назад

      Hello Mandy!
      The phrase "That's rich" can have different meanings depending on the context and tone. Here are the most common interpretations:
      1. Ironic or Sarcastic Disbelief
      It is often used to express disbelief or ridicule, especially when someone says something hypocritical or absurd.
      Example:
      Person A: "You should really work harder."
      Person B: "That's rich coming from someone who’s always late to work!"
      2. Amusement or Humor
      It can indicate that something is absurd, unexpected, or laughable in a humorous way.
      Example:
      She said she doesn’t gossip, but she knows everyone’s secrets. That’s rich!
      Typically, the sarcastic or ironic usage is the most common today.

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  7 дней назад

      Yes, "That's rich" can sometimes imply that someone's actions or behavior are characteristic of wealthy people, often with a touch of irony or criticism. This usage is less common but contextually possible.
      For example:
      "She bought another designer handbag? That’s rich."
      "He tipped a waiter $100 for a cup of coffee. That’s rich."
      In these cases, the phrase highlights behavior associated with wealth, sometimes suggesting extravagance, indulgence, or out-of-touch attitudes.

    Can you correct my English writing?

      Hello, I do not offer proofreading services at the moment. If I were you, I would use either CHATGPT or Grammarly. Both are great for correcting written English.

    I must say another thing , after the verb WISH to indicate a situation which is unreal or contrary to fact. as. I. wish. I were a millionaire. She wishes the car belonged to you. After. IF. to. express improbability or unreality in the present as. If. I were you. I should not do that. He orders me. as if I were his servant. Another example. If. it were other country she would have been imprisoned for many years.Please let me know whether I am right or wrong. I have no false ego, I want to learn from my mistake. Thanks.

      I'm glad you found it useful! I appreciate your feedback. My videos are a little long because I include as many examples and as much practice as possible in each one. Practice is the key to learning a language. Thanks for watching! 🤩🇨🇦
