Citroen Berlingo Van 2019 a robust, unique design offering extra comfort

  • Citroen's third generation Berlingo van is bigger than you might expect - and more sophisticated.
Citroen's much improved third generation Berlingo remains one of the market's best selling compact vans, offering a usefully large payload capacity and a maximum load volume of up to 4.4m3. It's now smarter looking than before and gets some extra hi-tech, plus there's a fresh range of clean and frugal Euro6 BlueHDi diesel engines. The idea is to rejuvenate this model's buying proposition and on paper at least, the prospects are promising.
    Background
Think of a compact but spacious van and it's really quite likely that you'll find yourself considering this one, Citroen's Berlingo. It's the kind of van you buy if your business needs a compact LCV that isn't quite as small as a modern cityvan-sector model would be - something like Citroen's own Nemo. Vehicles like that are based on superminis: Berlingo-type models, in contrast, sit upon the more spacious platforms originally developed for family hatchbacks or small MPVs.
The platform in question in this MK3 Berlingo is the PSA Group's modern 'EMP2' chassis, which also now underpins two of this model's closest segment competitors, Peugeot's Partner and Vauxhall's Combo, both rivals that also share this Berlingo's engine range and much of its design technology. It's Citroen though, that has the most heritage in this sector. This was the first brand to introduce a diesel powered LCV, the first to launch a van with an integrated load area and the first to launch an LCV model with three seats in the cabin. Building on this strong heritage, this MK3 Berlingo Van marks the renewal of a best-seller.
    Driving Experience
This time round, the Berlingo van sits on the PSA Group's more sophisticated, lighter 'EMP2' platform and uses an efficient set of diesel engines. There's the familiar 1.6-litre BlueHDi unit as before, offered in 75 or 100hp guises. More modern though, is the 1.5-litre BlueHDi powerplant, which comes if you're able to stretch up to a 130hp output. The top 130hp engine is offered with the option of EAT8 auto transmission.
Citroen reckons that this is the most comfort-orientated compact van you can buy, thanks to its 'Advanced Comfort programme' development. This is based around special cushioned seats, top-level acoustic treatment and special suspension settings designed to filter out bumps you'd really feel on rival models. Another clever touch is the 'Magic Wash' function that maintains visibility during window washing and halves the amount of liquid required. As before, a Grip Control option is available on some models to increase traction, incorporating hill-start assist. We like the new 'Flankguard' feature which informs the driver of the proximity of objects to the side of the manoeuvring vehicle by memorising the data recorded by sensors located in the front and rear bumpers, combined with the vehicle trajectory.

I've had this van now for a month so I thought I'll give some opinions on it and general things about it. Overall a good van and very car like with very little to criticise about it. However there are some issues which I'll come to. It drives as you would probably expect and doesn't surprise or thrill, the clutch is not heavy, the steering is light and the gearbox while notchy as said in this review is not a deal breaker and in 5 speed form it is still easy enough to find all the gears.
I have the Driver 100 1.5d, the engine is smooth and is very quiet at idle but does become gruff if you rev it hard. Power and acceleration I can only describe as adequate and that mainly due the sheer weight of the van, it really does blunt it's performance and agility, so I can't recommend anyone getting the 75 version.
    A list of gripes:
    1) The camera system needs you to press the OK button to remove the disclaimer every time you start the van. Really annoying if you do a lot of stop/start work. Whats wrong with a 5 second timeout?
2)The weight as above, it really feels 150kg overweight.
3)The finish on the steering wheel feels like it only going to last a couple of years. No option for a leather wheel even on Driver spec, why?
4)A bit too much tyre roar and cabin boom for my liking which is a bit disappointing considering I have the Driver with supposed extra acoustic treatment. While very car like over good surfaces, over bad surfaces it gets on my nerves. Did Citroen test the van on the roads over here before manufacture? While my old Kangoo was not the most refined thing, there was never this much noticeable cabin boom.
5)Maybe related to the above, the Berlingo's bulkhead is tinny compared to my old Kangoo's
6)12v socket is out of view near the cabin floor
7)Maybe just a build quality flaw with my van, when you open the drivers door there is a metal knocking sound related to some internal mechanism inside the door.
8)If you use bluetooth to stream music from your phone, it will default back to radio every time you switch the engine off/on. My old Kangoo managed to do this perfectly, how hard can it be?
9)Not sure if an IOS problem or van but if you stop/start a lot, the Apple Carplay screen will not come back and sometimes if playing Apple music it will just default back to radio.
10)I don't know if Citroen has changed the spec or another QC issue but my van doesn't have stop/start
The list is not meant to put anyone off buying the Berlingo, overall it is still a great van.

Hi Matt, Great review thanks, I'm looking to purchase. What is the stereo/speakers like. As a music head having car play is great but I also expect a decent sounding speaker set up being in a small cabin. Can you confirm ? Thanks

    • @matt8220
      @matt8220 3 года назад +3

@@rbtb4970 I predominately use Apple music and listen to Radio 2 so other audio sources maybe different and I couldn't tell you the wattage output from the system + speakers, it is not something I have looked into. I'm also using the standard factory audio settings.
Certain songs do do sound a bit thin and muddy. The bass is ok but doesn't have to crispness of high end equipment. The touchscreen is average and the software is a bit clunky but hey how many vans can boost about having an 8 inch infotainment system?
Overall it is no better or worse than your standard hatchback

i love the Citroen Berlingo, it's just quirky and has, like Jeremy Clarkson said, character. The Car was cheap, spacious and good looking during mk1. I didn't really like mk2 because of it's bland design, though the Features were nice. Now that the mk3 is out, i thought that the MPV looking like a pufferfish from the front. But it grew on me, though i like the LCV Front more, it just looks more like a mk1 to me than the MPV front.

What about the US version of the Fiat Doblo/Opel Combo? I think its a Dodge or Ram something or other...? Granted its smaller than the Nissan. But its a great driving vehicle (for a van). Although Im not sure how it handles with the big petrol lump that FCA group puts in it on that side of the pond. The Euro versions have smaller, mostly Diesel, engines.

    • @stuco81

@@abrahkadabra9501 Yes, its an older van now. So wont have the Nav etc shown here. The Vauxhall/Opel version of it has actually been replaced by a re-badged version of this Berlingo. But looks look like FCA are going to continue building it for a couple of more years till they come up with a replacement.
Like I say, it does drive well (I have one, with a 1.6 tdi), as you might expect of an italian vehicle. It has quite a complicated (read: expensive) fully independent rear suspension set-up. Which is still quite unusual in commercial vehicles.

    • @abrahkadabra9501
      @abrahkadabra9501 5 лет назад

@@stuco81 No offense but FCA has a poor reputation for reliability out here. Add that to the sticker shock (the high price) and drive quality is a poor consolation. The actual existence of FCA in North America is now in question after that huge recall of over 180,000 Ram pick ups and slumping sales.

@@corusameoccasum1274 Of course I do. If I wanted to buy a new car or a low mileage almost new one, I'd prefer West-German or Japanese brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda or Toyota. BMW would be my first choice, because that brand has earned my respect of quality already, many times. Maintenance of a BMW usually costs more than other cars, but driving a BMW feels much better than driving any French cars. Mercedes-Benz is the sister of BMW, I mean in quality, comfort and safety. A bit more pricy than BMW, but it's a premium-brand, you have to pay for the name.
Hondas are precise, high-tech cars, just like the bikes they make. Hondas are a lot cheaper than the german-made premium brands, of course they offer less comfort, but the same level of technical details.
Toyotas are the camels of the Sahara, it means I saw no broken Toyotas on the side of the road in my life at all, they will run until there's fuel in the tank and there's oil in the engine. Not so comfortable as the german cars, but it won't cost a fortune to buy and maintain them. A regularly checked Toyota can run a million kilometers or miles without replacing main parts in the engine. I am a car mechanic, I have my own shop, but I can tell you, Toyotas are rarely seen guests in my shop.
It depends on what you want to do with the car, I know there's a reason for buying a Citroen or a Renault too, but as someone who lives out of repairing cars, I wouldn't buy a French-made car.
