    This video is a recording of "Bleed" played by Tomas Haake of Meshuggah on his personal drumset at Fear and Loathing Studios in Stockholm, Sweden for Toontrack's EZdrummer "Metalheads Expansion Pack" (VSTi). Recorded and Produced by Daniel Bergstrand. Midi editing by Fredrik Thordendal. Post-production mix by Professor Serious in Reaper 3.72. Video was created with Nero, and I guess it cant handle line-level audio (some clipping). In my opinion Drumkit From Hell has a more "punchier" sound, larger soundscape and better cymbal tone seperation. But if mixed properly (with a little extra EQ work), Metalheadz EZX sounds epic! If you want Thomas Haake's drumset and the rest of the Meshuggah midi drumtracks (12 total) in High Quality visit toontrack.com and for more info on meshuggah visit meshuggah.net
    People please, this is Tomas, or Toontrack would have a lot of lawsuits on their hands. There are ghost notes, but they were lost in the youtube compression. This is a non-HQ video from a few years ago. It's Tomas, trust me. There's even documentaries of Tomas making this on youtube somewhere. Just go to Toontrack.com before posting things like, "This is not Tomas'' or ''This is the wrong BPM'' or ''There are no ghost notes."
    This video was my way of advertising (and reviewing) their product. I have the rights to post this. Toontrack released a product, in this case, drum midi files of Meshuggah songs (as they have been doing for over a decade). Customers who purchase that product also purchase the right to use, edit, or reproduce it. I've paid toontrack for those rights. I have great respect for Meshuggah and Toontrack and I look forward to their next release.
    the hi-hat seems a little quiet in this mix, otherwise ENJOY!

    To try to clarify a little bit. A 3/4 beat and a 4/4 beat that are played at the same tempo and line up every 12th note is a polymeter. A 3/4 beat that is played at the same time as a 4/4 in two different tempos so that they start and end at the same time is a polyrythym. Make more sense?

    @Drummerz24 Yeah, definitely. If you become proficient in drum programming (being a drummer as well) it's a great knowledge to have and you can wield it to great advantage. For example, with my band, i recorded my drum tracks on one condensor mic for demo purposes, then I took the time to completely recreate them in Addictive Drums. It sounds great now and it can sit better with the other instruments that were recorded. It all depends on the drummer but I suggest you give it a shot!

    @VJelectro I see your point, but not all studio's are expensive, and as a drummer myself as well, I ran into this problem when trying to record my side band's first EP, (nothing special, just a local band). I can play all the numbers live, but I was struggling to get the right drum sound I wanted trying to record it at home. My bandmates suggested the software, but I wanted (for the few that bought the album) to know it was me playing, not a computer program, granted it was still all my work.

  • @alexkills
    @alexkills 12 лет назад

    @Xam271 I figured it out lol. I should've been clearer and asked about the pattern instead of the count lol. 99% of Meshuggah's songs are 4/4, but that pattern where I mentioned was intriguing, to say the least.
    Such awesome people listen to this music. Thanks for the input and the help!

    @JustMeGuitarman This recording is 115 bpm. Some people claim that Bleed is 110 or 120, they are probably referring to a different recordings. This was recorded for Toontrack years after Obzen was released, in Meshuggah's studio in Sweden.

  • @Xhell420

    @RobSoundtrack I did not add any compression (besides that of whatever youtube applies to their videos to save space). I did do a little EQ, in the lows and low-mids. I think in the prgram there is a "compression" fader, that sends a compressesd signal into the mix... much like the "room" mic fader.

    Tomas Haake Worked directly with Toontrack to develope this plug in for EZ drummer. The sounds your are hearing are sampled from Haake's kit and was recorded by Haake through triggers to create a MIDI track. Sure it's a mapped (sequenced) track but the midi recording came directly from Haake himself.

  • @Drummerz24
    @Drummerz24 13 лет назад

    @VJelectro True. As long as the musician can preform it live, I guess it makes a viable option for recording purposes. This kind of technique could be handy for recording on a budget too, but I have to admit, I haven't really taken the time to learn or use drum software yet. So, I guess I can't knock it until I've really tried it.

    Agreed, way better than dfh. I recently did the crossgrade to SDX with the Metal Foundry. Similar sound just with better samples and more eq. But just for quick mock up drum tracks with good quality, Metalheads is the perfect choice. Sick vid.

  • @SuperUltra
    @SuperUltra 12 лет назад

    @emilolsson91 They use a technique called polymeters. Polyrhythm are two different beats which end up in the same time signature or one measure usually ends up the same, just with different speeds. Polymeters is using two or more totally different time signatures at the same time, creating the chaotic effect. Millenium Cyanide Christ for example, has a 4/4 beat for snare and hi-hat but the kick changes with every (short) measure.

  • @arvindmega
    @arvindmega 11 лет назад

    Awesome!

  • @dr4d1s
    @dr4d1s 12 лет назад

    Actually the whole thing is in 4/4. The kicks may sound like they are in an odd time, but its the way that you sub divide the 4/4 that gives you the feel of the odd time...Its not an actually in a different time signature. If that was the case you would find less upbeats and downbeats between the hands and feet happening at the same time.

    @Sc0ttPrian i understand completely. DEI has always been my favorite album. and choasphere... but luckily this EZX software comes with 12 of their most popular songs. I choose to put up Bleed, because i never plan on covering it. I had Sane up on youtube, but took it down because i began covering it. And didnt want people using samples, that i mixed, on their recordings without my permission. i dont care about bleed enough to cover it, so im sharing it with the world.

    I love Meshuggah. They are my favorite band hands down. Especially their earlier works. As a huge fan, I consider Metalheads EZX as a special Meshuggah Release. That was the main reason why i got it. But as a composer/producer it has also given me another option, other than alll that Drumkit From Hell has to offer. As a stand alone EZX it's great, but I totally recommend getting DFH first, then adding Metalheads to your arsenal. Ideally you should have Superior Drummer if you want total control.

    Yes. I use Cubase 5 and a 61 key midi controller to do mine but you can also use your computer keyboard as a virtual midi controller. it just won't have the same response as an good midi controller. if your feeling ambitious you can actually sit there and mouse click each note ;)

    @iAmPesukone Sorry, but the ghost notes are in this recording. Just can't be heard here. I were actually really confused when playing this with a higher velocity, that there were snare hits that I did not know about. (Haven't heard them on the recording)

    @manorocks123 baring in mind this expansion can be used on both EZdrummer AND Superior Drummer. I use it with EZDrummer as the overall file size including EZdrummer is alot smaller than that of superior drummer. But at the end of the day man its all down to personal preferences and which programme you prefer to use.

  • @jesusmaster44
    @jesusmaster44 11 лет назад

    It's actually both. When talking about multiple rhythms playing at the same time, that's polyrhythm. When referring to different meters in a piece of music, that's polymeter. Hence, playing a 3/8 beat with a 4/4 beat is an example of both polyrhythm AND polymeter.

  • @tcookie12
    @tcookie12 13 лет назад

    @ctuliebs
    He's using ezdrummer. Superior 2.0 kits all have that "elegant" theme to it and you can't change that. With ezdrummer, the kits all have a different look to them. Such as the drum kit from hell pack. It has the flames, but on superior, its just that elegant look like on all other expansions.
    Don't waste the money on ezdrummer just for the themes if you already have superior! Superior does everything ezdrummer can do. Plus WAY more.

  • @Xhell420
    @Xhell420  13 лет назад

    You can use Metalheads just as easily as DFH to record new beats. But DFH comes with a ton of generic midi files "beats" of different time sigs and feels. Though recorded as a heavy metal tool, you can get a Rock/Pop sound with DFH, you cant really get that with metalheads. Metalheads IS Thomas Haakes drumset, but you only get 12 meshuggah songs, no extra beats. DFH was recorded by Haake as well as other great drummers included. As a composer or producer you will find more uses for DFH.

  • @YourFavoriteLesbo
    @YourFavoriteLesbo 12 лет назад

    @InfernoMitchi93 You need to manually change the velocities. I noticed that with their more recent EZX's, they have a weird velocity pattern that if you trigger the sample with anything other than full force, it'll sound really quiet and weak. Unfortunately, most GP files are programmed with varying velocities so it doesn't copy+paste too well.

  • @Xhell420
    @Xhell420  11 лет назад +1

    by saying this part fo the drumset is in a different time signature is being redundant. the point of a drumset is to play multiple rhythms at once. Polyrythms. and that doesnt change the PULSE of the beat.... which creates the time signature (and tempo). Like MOST Meshuggah, it's in 4/4 ...nuff said.

  • @BreanMate
    @BreanMate 13 лет назад

    @everythingwentjim he's not saying it's easy to replicate, it's the fact that it's just a polyrhytmic herta pattern (2 32nd notes followed by 2 16th notes) that makes it simple, aside from the fact it's occasionally played up with extra 16th notes, it's a simple 4/4 / 3/4 polyrhythm, + it doesn't take too much stamina once you have the technique down
    Also, to the creator of this, you missed out all the ghosts on the snare.

  • @mrbullseye
    @mrbullseye 12 лет назад

    @Sticksandstones32 Oh yes, they are there. Try upping the velocity in EZ-drummer, and the ghost notes pop out more.

  • @iAmPesukone
    @iAmPesukone 13 лет назад

    @bungiejumper765 It's really simple indeed, but coupled with some polyrhythms and speed it becomes a beat that demands a hellish lot of stamina and counting.

    @abyxjohnson dont judge a drum machine by it's low-quality youtube video. This EZX comes with several different snares, this happens to be Haake's personal snare. There's is also a mixer in the program to change the levels, and of coarse yuo cn tweak it inside your host.. i use Reaper.

  • @Xhell420
    @Xhell420  13 лет назад

    @Sticksandstones32 No they're there. It's lost in the youtube quality compression

  • @Xhell420
    @Xhell420  13 лет назад

    @BertFlamingo Haha... i know, it's so groovey. This of coarse was a a real recording, turned into midi, then i mixed and bounced it down to .wav, made it into a video, and uploaded it so anyone can jam with this song, and see the potential for Metalheads. There are free and easy ways to download videos from youtube and rip the audio from it. But i suggest you buy EZdrummer's Metalheads and have drumtracks of 11 more songs by meshuggah!

  • @emilolsson91

    @rockrule80 No... but Polyrhythm is when 2 (or more) beats is played simultaneously and most of Meshuggah's (or Periphery's, Vildhjarta's, Tool's etc.) songs has a 4/4 ground beat that revolves around 4-16 bars... so... this song is still 4/4 ;)

    @GuitarWyzzard It depends on what your needs are. If your a sound engineer that needs to put a drumtrack to various types of music (say metal most common), I would definitely suggest Drumkit From Hell. If you are a huge Meshuggah fan, and need all of their special releases, possibly want to cover one of their songs, i suggest metalheads. If you are a composer, lookin to write new drumbeats of any style, i suggest DFH. If you want to re-write Meshuggah's beats into your own I suggest Metalheads.

    @Drummerz24 Yeah, In my perfect world, I'd want it to be me playing the instrument and recording my performance. That's my number one choice, but all in all, if you put the right amount of work and dedication into it, you can get the sound and performance you want in software. You just have to keep in mind your drumming abilities and certain nuances that you have when you actually play the instrument.
