No living American journalist has a fiercer reputation for independence-and invective-than Glenn Greenwald. The Pulitzer Prize winner helped break the Edward Snowden revelations, was once threatened with jail time by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and was part of the team that launched The Intercept in 2014 before resigning six years later, claiming his colleagues were censoring his criticism of the Biden administration.
So what are we to make of the fact that Greenwald, once a contributing writer at Salon who appeared regularly on the left-wing news show Democracy Now!, is now a fixture on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight? How do we explain the fact that Greenwald, known for his progressive critique of American foreign policy, is now welcomed in conservative circles but considered a pariah by many of his former colleagues on the left?
Has Glenn Greenwald changed, or have the rest of us?
Reason's Nick Gillespie caught up with him in Las Vegas, where he was speaking at FreedomFest, an annual gathering of conservatives and libertarians. Greenwald was part of a roster this year that included Sen Rand Paul (R-Ky.), publisher Steve Forbes, former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Project Veritas' James O'Keefe.
We talked about why he has no qualms about appearing on Carlson's show, why so much of the legacy and left-wing press is quick to apologize for state power, how the trans movement shows the limits of identity politics, and whether the state has any business regulating the internet via antitrust actions.

As a Libertarian, I would say Glenn Greenwald has a fuller understanding of what ails the United States far better than ReasonTV.
@@malvolio01 My guess is that he's trying to say that he's speaking as a Libertarian. A lot of people consider "As an X" to be a coherent and grammatically complete statement about their own personal identity. I think that that's what this guy is doing and that the comma is meant as a period. A lot of people think that periods are for the end of paragraphs and that fully stated ideas can just be linked with commas. When you match up multiple grammatical errors, sometimes the result is a coherent sentence that is intended to mean something quite different from what standard grammatical maxims tell us it does mean.

I am conservative, but Glenn Greenwald is absolutely my favourite journalist, number one, and by far. His integrity is beyond question, he made me consider left wing ideas, by not being a partisan hack like most left "jounalists" are.

I have a similar opinion of Jimmy Dore. He's pretty far left, but he's honest and actually wants to find out what the truth is. As a result, I've found myself softening on some of his ideas. I still disagree, but I don't have the visceral response I would have hearing those same ideas from known liars and propagandists. For once, I'm able to believe that a person's motivations come from an honest place.

That said, if he was going to play devils advocate, then he should've set it up as a debate and not an interview. What I did appreciate from this was that his push back made Glenn shine even more. Still, his interruptions had me checking out early.

Glenn Greenwald is one of the last genuine journalists who still challenges the government. He still knows that is their job in the news media.

you people are delusional! I thought that this was a great conversation of back and forth and both brought forth great points from different perspectives. From what I have heard this proves that there is a lot in similar from liberty minded people than is different. You could sure see this interviewer's bias. When Glen would bring up an argument that didn't go along with his viewpoint, he would interrupt him. The longer the interview went, you could really see the anger swelling up inside this guy, to the point of becoming more and more hostile towards Glenn. He was doing his best to try and "censor" him without appearing to "censor" him. Bravo Glen for making a forceful argument for free speech and not allowing this guy to shut you down.

The more I watch these long form interviews and hear Nick repeat left wing talking points the more I'm reminded why I turned away from big L Libertarianism. I have been following Glenn since 2005.

As far as I can see, Glenn is the sort of person most leftists like to imagine themselves as, but few actually are.

I came to the same conclusion. The left THINKS it supports individual rights, holding elites accountable, freedom of speech, etc, but in reality they only support those things when it is politically advantageous. They readily throw them out the window when it suits them. Sort of like tolerance and diversity. Tolerance for the groups and ideas they like. Diversity only includes the groups they select. Absolutely zero tolerance for opinions that do not hold.

The problem with the political pendulum swing (which is occurring among the top cohort -- not journalists or GG) -- which nick started but was not developed by either -- is the amorphous return to "spiritualism."
The interviewer didn't want to hear the replies, he just wanted to levy veiled attack after veiled attack without actually engaging in substantive dialogue. With every competent answer from Greenwald, the interviewer just interrupts and changes topic. So smug. Meanwhile Greenwald is there happily and honestly engaging in good faith.

My “Like” is for GG. Am leaving with a distaste for the interviewer but appreciate the opportunity to witnesses a (mostly) civil exchange between intellectual men. As a Mex-American, I am grateful for Glen’s clear explanation of GRT. This is just one reason why this Latina “walked away” from the Democratic Party and registered Independent. I will be voting for conservative candidates as it is time to get rational adults back behind the wheel. The craziness has to stop.

I don't watch Tucker, either, but I definitely got the impression (both from Greenwald in the interview and elsewhere people are discussing the topic) that Tucker's complaint wasn't racially based but culturally based. You can't maintain a high-trust society with a large segment of people socialized to low-trust, for example.

When Glen was speaking on topics that he didn't care for, he would talk over him with "Sure, sure." Also, I must correct the interviewer on something. This was a highlight for me as well. The establishment left have essentially just settled on a strawman version of Tucker’s argument. Not only is it frustrating, it’s also a little disorienting and perhaps somewhere in its core intentionally so. You find yourself wondering if you were the one who heard it wrong.
Tucker very explicitly points to the democrats’ own messaging and yet this gets turned around and thrown back on him. If you don’t actually watch his show ever, you won’t know the difference.

Many people shit on Greenwald for his style which at times borders on polemic, his willingness to criticize those who are his former colleagues and go against the progressive grain. They all rely on speculative ad hominem attacks, the sort of deconstructivist thinking assumes bad intentions based on circumstance regardless of what the argument says. These sorts of critics reveal more about themselves than they do Greenwald. I have never read a Glenn Greenwald article or seen a video in which he relied on falsehoods, ad hominems or exaggeration to get his point across. He always does what journalists should do, gives the facts, and bases his claims solely on those facts.
He did not change sides, by being welcomed by conservatives. He is sticking what he always has done, exposing yhe truth about bad decisions, made by the most powerful elements in society, at great risk to himself.

Two comments - this re-affirms my believe that Glenn is one of the best journalists out there. Full stop. Secondly, I wasn’t so aware of this other journalist. He’s balanced, fair and asks GREAT questions.

I don't think he was virtue signaling, but drawing attention to the fact that the changing status of women in society has more to do with falling birthrates than any economic malaise. I agree with him on that, but agree with Glenn on the broader point.

To me it's just the lack of coercive violence in a consensual exchange. If 2 people make a deal without threats being involved to force anyone's hand then that's capitalism. If the government (and the inherent threat of force that it represents) gets involved then it becomes something else, a hybrid of socialism and capitalism for better or worse (imo for worse).

It is both surprising and disappointing that someone as well-read as Nick Gillespie completely misunderstands Tucker Carlson's take on the Great Replacement Theory. It's surprising because Tucker has discussed his views at length on his show. He has explained what he believes and what he does NOT believe. He has explained why he believes what he does and has shared some of the original source documents that shaped his views. Despite all that exposition, Nick attributes to Carlson a view Tucker has explicitly disavowed.
And that should tell you something profound about Gillespie and Reason.
