Well like if Chomsky was ever real about acquiring and using power, which he wasn't, but as Michael himself pointed out, it would have been foolish at the time for Chomsky to think either thing was currently possible for the left.

Watching this 14 minutes just gives you a sample of what we lost. If you're on the Right, he just smashed some banal talking points you use to label "the Left" and gave you a starting point on substantive meaningful discourse. He just openly diagnosed aspects of the Left' pearl clutching while at the same time exposing the Right for their vapid empty rhetoric and labels towards the Left. Giving you an idea of what we hope to achieve.
@Herra Tossavainen 1000% True. This is the biggest flaw on the Left. We are totally unorganized. It's our biggest problem not our platform. The Right will unify even under a lie while the left doesn't need to go that far and we need to stop the pearl clutching. If we did just that we would be a force of nature.
Event Horizon An observation just on one point, not about anything Michael said as I have listened to him and admired him since I first heard him on MR. I have watched the US fight and waste time about healthcare for years and it’s incredulous to me that there is so much opposition to it from, let’s say, the average citizen. People felt this way long before the scary word ‘socialism’ came into the discussion and in my experience it was never related to age. The word itself is now used as a distraction and a weapon by the right. A living wage, healthcare and education are basic human rights and not in any way radical ideas. Also, the money made on the backs of working and middle class people is an anathema to me. I agree with you as our society is devolving as we type.
Tess Forbes Well, Socialism is being used as a slur. Majority of the people on the Right (99%) couldn’t tell you what is was even if you had them read the definition of it. They couldn’t tell you how it applies. The Mainstream Left/ Neoliberals who have money at stake to lose if Socialists actually came to power and held them accountable for their shady tax evasions for example. It’s more nuanced than that to be sure. What I mean to say is, they both have a lot to lose and will do anything to root it out. Even though they apply socialism for their own benefit- like government bailouts. The Left needs to get organized and get our message out. We are too busy with pearl clutching and purity tests. However, we do agree on most major issues. If we can unify under that and win. We can sort out the rest amongst ourselves as intellectuals. Healthcare? Well, it comes back to the propaganda machine from the Media controlled by the elites who have money to lose under Medicare For All. So they fear monger. We know now that it can be paid for especially in light of the stimulus packages. We have so much work to do. The Right will unify under a lie to win. We don’t even have to go that far. Our platform can win the heartlands and shift the country Left on politics.
On the other hand, Chomsky is notoriously dry and inaccessible for people who aren't already interested in internationalism or dissident politics. He was my gateways drug and a personal hero but I can't help but think Michael's charisma and affect made him much more universally appealing.

Its sad he was scared to bring it up. Mike was worried his audience would snap at him if he talked about the prevalence and danger of cancel culture.....thus proving cancel culture's effectiveness to silence people who haven't been subjected to cancellation.
It’s sad that he felt that way, I don’t think he should have had to worry about “being cancelled” because he was solid. But the racists and bigots should be cancelled and have no place to spread hate.
Had to come back and watch this again. I feel like he could enlighten just about anyone on any side.. as long as they let their guard down. He does care about their views and isn’t there to attack them.

I was a regular viewer of The Michael Brooks Show along with The Minority Report and watching this clip in particular made the stark fact of his passing overwhelmingly emotional. Brooks was a gifted communicator. An enormously knowledgeable and empathetic and funny man. I didn't know him personally but his contribution to the discourse I very much appreciated. He was a serious person who was always extremely effective using new media and the sheer force of his charisma to accurately diagnose Politics and The Left in particular. Goddam I'll miss this Guy!
one of the sadder things is that whenever someone of great intelligence passes away you can always put on a straight face and read their work as though they were still here. With michael, its too hard to read his books without getting emotional at his passing
He was one of the brightest minds in the political arena and he will be missed by many. Such a keen and personable mine. From our family to his, much love and light. Thank you for sharing him with us for the years we got to have.
This may be my stupid belief (but hey it's innocuous anyway) but I think certain people have political instincts that allow them to analyse the world in a more cogent way, be that on the right or the left. Michael definitely had that, God bless him.
But where you draw the line between the "substantive" and "merely preferential" is itself informed by one's own cultural background. To make the obvious example, a white person and a black person may grow up in relative economic parity, yet judge different things to be substantive based on their cultural backgrounds. Brooks is articulate, yet his argument boils down to saying "we should pay attention to important things and not pay attention to not important things." Well gee, thanks!
The criticism you've mentioned reflects a common challenge in political discourse: the subjective nature of what is deemed substantive or preferential. Sure, perspectives on importance can be shaped by one's cultural background. Brooks likely advocated for a focus on systemic and structural issues that impact broad sections of society, irrespective of individual preferences, to address broader inequalities.
I find it very hard to believe that someone whose humour is so infused with anti-gay themes and tones would really draw a line in the sand for us, though I do agree that one must often work with people with revolting personal taste (in fact, he'd be my example).
