  • Hello Everyone!
    This is a golden tape from when I first visited Russia and I was introduced to this amazing man, Gennady Selutsky.
    He was a legend of both The Vaganova Ballet Academy and Mariinsky Ballet. Everybody loved him!
    Here he was assessing me to see if it was even possible, or if I even had a chance of being considered one day to go to the school!
    He later informed me during the lesson, everything wasn't bad but my legs were too low. As you can see my legs got very high!! Because I stretched and strengthened.
    Take my courses on my website to see how I did that. I share it all with you and my method proves you don't need to have ANY limitations to your dancing!
    For context about this great man - watch this video of his gala at Mariinsky! Celebrating him as a teacher and all his students
    • Dear Gennady Naumovich!

    It’s nice to see the young Isabella. It is so endearing to see you and this class. Thank you for sharing something so precious and valuable. I can see how this was a beginning to a beautiful relationship. And it’s wonderful to see the hands on cues and how you met them opened eyed and absorbed it. What useful information. I can see the very corrections you help me with in class.

    Hi Isabella, thanks for uploading this very interesting piece of video. Can I ask if Gennady was instrumental in getting you an audition to the Vaganova School and/or your being offered a place?

    • @balletwithisabella
      @balletwithisabella  2 года назад +8

      No as it’s very political there so we saw him in secret as we Gennady didn’t want anything getting in the way like the director not liking him that day or something! So my Russian teacher in the video got me seen on our own simply by visiting and then asking as she herself was a student there before.

      @@balletwithisabella @Ballet With Isabella That's so interesting. I'm glad he managed to maintain his independence in evaluating students in these sorts of situations and cutting out all the middle men. How kind of your teacher to make that arrangement too. I can well imagine politics and personalities getting in the way in such a competitive environment. Gennady appears to have really worked at giving you the best assistance and assessment he could during that class. Thanks for responding and passing on your insights.

      @@balletwithisabella that's very interesting.. You're saying just getting into the academy can be a question of politics? I thought that was just for the company.

    This is a privileged life indeed…being flown to Russia for private dance coaching aged 12 😳

    • @balletwithisabella
      @balletwithisabella  2 года назад +25

      We went for a week with my teacher anyway and then managed to arrange a lesson. We didn’t fly just for a lesson. My mother is a wonderful person and wanted the best for me. She saw my talent and tried her best to give me opportunities where I could be presented in front of the right people.

    • @blackcat3289

      @@balletwithisabella yes, it’s fantastic. Wonderful to have that opportunity and a parent who was able to focus on nurturing your talent in such a way. And hugely privileged. That is not a criticism it’s a fact. 1 in 5 children in the UK today are receiving free school meals because their household income is so low the government considers it necessary to intervene to ensure they receive one full hot meal daily. It’s a very small minority of children indeed who have experiences such as dance lessons in Russia.

    • @balletwithisabella

      @@blackcat3289 I think if you’re doing any kind of highly skilled pursuit be it ballet or something else, you are lucky enough either to have the means to invest in that or you have a sponsor.
      I think if you’re of the minority struggling for meals weekly the likelihood of doing something like ballet to a pro level or for parents to even think about doing it is very low sadly.
      Any child doing ballet to a high level has to and has the means to travel to summer schools, competitions, visit schools and yes they are lucky they have that chance.
      My parents worked very hard, had good jobs and had the means to help me as well as we mostly had sponsors helping.
      What’s good now is there are programmes that take ballet to state schools where kids may not usually be exposed to ballet due to their financial reasons.

      @@blackcat3289 yes it was a privilege and I became great friends with gennady all the way into my 20’s. I worked very hard everyday and had good people around me who wanted to help me. Because of this, I was given this exciting opportunity.
