@@cravattinoivyexactly! The extended version is one of the top 5 best tracks on the 30th Anniversary of Music Box. I used to hate this song when The Rarities came out because she sounded like she had a cold and the song sounded unfinished.
I think it's a fan favorite because we all had to dig to find it but now it's on an official release so that sense of accomplishment isn't there for new listeners. It is one of her best though.

At the time I hadn’t listened an entire Mariah album (well any artists album) and thought it was from later era. I had always known mariah did hip hop and r&b but slipping away was the song that taught me that mariah did it but lived r&b. Theres no trying to be she just is.

The Firecracker version of Loverboy I think makes more musical sense, but the Candy sample brings out a lot of depth over time (although on first few listens, it feels cluttered and chaotic). I like to think that the Firecracker version could be better with a bit more finessing, but as it is, having come to know them both at the same time (rather than getting used to one version before going to the other), I find them to be on pretty equal footing.

And funny that you mentioned that part of the instrumentation, because for me those beats, for me, were the ones showing that part when you are in your head, wondering if the other person is thinking of you. My fav from the album was Slipping Away, and let's say this: Mariah is the queen of covers. And yes, we do need a jazz album from Mariah (listen to her collab with Tony Bennett for his duets album). To end the record, the message in "Save the day" is just outstanding. If you want to listen to a song that is rare from Mariah, please listen to "Right to Dream", from her 2008 movie "Tennessee" and also "There for me".Thanks for sharing. Fun stories….hmmm, did you know that while recording the album Daydream, Mariah secretly recorded a punk rock album entitled “Someone’s Ugly Daughter” under the band name Chick. The label refused to let her release it but Mariah has promised to find it and put it out! If you didn’t already know. 🤩🥳❤
Which was a HUGE mistake because that song (in conjunction with “Melt Away”) could’ve EASILY been huge songs for her & made her transition into “Butterfly” a little smoother. What Tommy failed to pay attention to is the fact that Mariah IS Black & so was a chunk of her fan base.
If you really listen to the lyrics of ‘one night’ it’s talking about the unsafe sex practices and allure of prostitution. first verse is from the girls view and second verse is the guys. It was most likely not what the label wanted her to sing about on her album they were in charge of But The album someone’s ugly daughter has a lot of life situations and dark subject matter and lyrically the song “one nigt” fit’s more on that album
