    Thanks for this. This is the first time I have watched the Jock Stein footage since I saw it live, hearing Billy McNeil as well, it was a rough moment for Scotland and Celtic fans, and even Rangers fans. This was a golden era for Scotland the talent was mind boggling, we probably could have made two full squads and either one could have got it done. When you read the list of names and managers involved in the whole road to Mexico, its insane. Those players came from multiple great Scottish League teams and English teams, and many of them learned from the golden age of Scottish managers. I am a Celtic fan, any Celtic fan that can't enjoy watching Davie Cooper play is mental 😅

    I remember the 2nd leg of the Australia game, we had o level exams at school. One of the guys brought in a portable handheld tv ,something most people did not have, very hard to get a glance at the screen during lunch, but too excited to sit an exam knowing the game was on.

      I was in primary school that day. The p7s were allowed into the assemble room to watch it on the schools one telly! At breaktime we were up at the windows gesturing for them to tell us the latest score.

    If there is a goal that I remember well from Mexico 86, it was Gordon Strachan's goal against Germany. He was excited celebrating his goal and at the same time trying in vain to jump over the billboard that he couldn't due to his height. Obviously he took it very gracefully and it was one of those postcards that are pleasantly saved in the memory of the World Cups. Greetings from Tucuman-Argentina

      No, he was pretending to try to jump over it in order to parody all the other players who did so.

      I wonder how the squad would have performed had they not lost their manager on the night of qualification against Wales. It must have had a psychological effect on the team and somehow interrupted their flow, albeit Alex Ferguson obviously a top manager but he had no time with the team.

      @@GusMac6129 Denmark were crap? They were one of the best international teams in the eighties - Morten Olsen, Soren Lerby, Michael Laudrup, Preben Elkjaer etc. Belgium were crap? Got to the Final of Euro 1980 and the semi finals of 1986 WC. I'll give you Turkey but pretty much all the Eastern European sides were better - Romania, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and there were two German teams, East and West, and no micro nations like Gibraltar and San Marino. Four team groups, usually at least 3 good teams in them and no room for error. BTW that Wales match in these highlights was the only home World Cup qualifying match we lost in about 40 years. We lose more per campaign these days. 8 teams qualified for the Euro finals so it was much much harder to qualify unlike now where virtually everyone gets in. World Cups, qualification was shorter but easier? You usually had to beat a major nation - Spain, France, Czechoslovakia (then European champions) etc.

    • @GusMac6129
      @GusMac6129 Год назад

      @@darrinfrew4066 Aye Denmark were crap, they were a cult team, that like Scotland achieved nothing. The Denmark team of the 90's & today were far superior. Just like Belgium.
      But i can tell you life in some kind of bubble of the past, by all means enjoy, i do. I enjoy looking back. In fact Scotland were probably a better team in the 90's, then they were in the 80's. But the fact of the matter is. And this is the last time i will say it. EVERYBODY ELSE just got better.

      The original plan was for another group to be played between the 3 runners up of the 4 team-groups (would have been Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands) with the winners qualifying for Mexico and the runners-up going on to play the OFC winners (Australia) but UEFA thought that would be too many games to fit in so changed the format.
