What a big new! Big project also! It's going to be worth it and I'm sure it will be amazing, like everything you do in the farm 👌🏼
So funny when John picked the "blood" 😂 It seems to be "Betadine", an antiseptic solution that looks like blood!

I love watching, but you may know that by now. I was thinking about your content should you have routine hiccups like John's shoulder issue. There are somethings you have done in the past that would be great to see, but not just as reruns. Episodes done in chapter firms of your travels with you narrating them. The chapters could be perhaps about 4 months of travels with links to full episodes.
The other thing I think would be incredibly interesting is a John focused series of his travels before. Like his places he went I believe as a reporter.
Lastly, you two traveled a lot. Having a family and farm has slowed you down, but you are in a "new country". Day trips or overnight trips to places of interest, exploring food and wine would be awesome. You two are the perfect ambassador type couple. So I hope you will show off more than the farm. You fell in love with Portugal. So show Portugal.
Either way I will be watching you Be Brave, Think Big And Exploring!

It’s so disappointing that you have bought into the the culture of tear it down and build new. New is better. What happens to all the rubble? What happens to all the history? This is just not what I expected from this channel. Good luck. I won’t watch any further.

The spiders you showed are types of "cellar spiders"; they are actually very helpful, and have probably kept the derelect house from falling victim to other insect infestations; they also hunt black widows, which is most definitely a great benefit. Cellar spiders are not poisonous for humans; just wipe away their webs, carry the spiders out in a jar, and let them go in your forest area - they are beneficial to your land's health!

So glad for you coming to a fine decision - build from scratch! We tried to renovate an old house in the Mediterranean but humidity kept creeping up the walls. A total new building will be dry and safe and the maintenance will save you the money you invest now. The farm has wonderful views, try to incorporate those. You will enjoy it year round. Your boys are beaming joys, love to see them with their lovely parents. Take care and John, WATCH YOUR SHOULDER!!!

Restoration always, preserves a buildings history. My father restored houses, only one at a time (legal avoidance of Capital Gains Tax as main and only residence) and we lived in it or should that be camped whilst the work was done. Finished and sold, we moved to the next project. Lots of bomb damaged houses around in the '50's.

Makes total sense to demolish and rebuild. That way you can build a house that totally meets your needs, instead of trying to alter, redesign and renovate an old one. With a new build you can also incorporate eco friendly measures far easily than trying to install in an old building. Exciting times ahead for you 👍

Thanks for bringing us along on this new plan. I agree that a view thru to the stone table would be impressive. I panicked a bit when you spoke of tearing down both houses. Construction is stressful enough, but to destroy what you've achieved before you have new safe, clean, and roomy quarters sounds like a recipe for major overwhelm. I'd suggest doing it in stages so the gnarly place gets transformed before you make the place uninhabitable. Vanlife for 4 in the interim might not be best for moods and quality of rest.

One part of the Newby farm I’ve always admired is the symmetry of the 2 existing cottage/houses. With all the work on the restoration, kitchen build is there anyway to keep the current home building? Perhaps Do a mini restoration new John kitchen on the other twin stone house and then build your new home!
The excitement of being able to incorporate all manner of eco-friendly construction, energy independence is very exciting.
Tho, I like the two sentry houses flanking the entry; in addition to guest quarters, I’m sure you’d be booked solid with holiday rentals if you wanted rental income in future😊 and then with the new build, you have a little farm compound of sorts.

Just a suggestion. Depending on which direction the stone table area of the house faces, I would suggest you install wall to wall glass sliding doors to get the maximum natural light and view from inside. I love natural light. Also if you can and since you are joining two houses into one try and build one level house. Most houses in warm states in USA one level houses have higher values than two level house. I have one level huge home and it is so much nicer. @@TheNewbys

Hi Newbys! Starting from scratch will no doubt allow you to have a more rational and functional new home, although restoring the old house would maintain the original plan and look of the property, that already fits in perfectly with its surroundings. You could use traditional materials while adopting modern solutions for insulation and such... it would be like a grand "tiny house" makeover, there were lots of spiders and creepy things there too but it turned out great in the end! The old house is really a disaster looking at it now but the mess can be cleared out, windows can be widened, doors can be added and floor plans can be changed. In any case I am sure you will follow your vision and make a wonderful home whichever way you decide to go! I look forward to this next chapter! Ciao from Italy ❤

Agreed, don’t mean to put a damper on your plans but one thing to keep in mind is that in Portugal, things are very, very slow to get done!! In North America as well as probably in England, getting permits, getting materials & the contractors to do the work are done in a relatively timely manner, not so much in Portugal!! I’ve watched & heard of many people who waited a long time for the bureaucratic red tape to go through & then to get the construction companies
& contractors to finish building the house so you may want to rethink your plans to demolish & start from scratch! Look how long it took you to get a plumber to come fix the leak in your stone house, I think it was. It’s becoming increasingly harder to get materials as well as workers to work here in Canada, not to mention the increased cost of building materials so I can imagine it may be the same or maybe worse there! I would hate to see you guys go through all that stress when you can probably renovate the existing house in a much less expensive way & still get fantastic quality results!Just something to think about 😊 Also about having 2 bathrooms in the house, your boys are going to grow up & start using the bathroom as well & there’s nothing worse than 2 people or more needing to use the bathroom at the same time when there’s only 1 bathroom available, just saying 😉 Think about future needs especially if this is house/property is going to be your forever home 😀

At the age of 63, I'm living vicariously thru your family's journey of transforming your place in Portugal. I bought an acre of land & put a single wide trailer on it. I had to have a well & septic system installed. A week & 1/2 to 2 weeks after my trailer was moved on my land, I found out I had non invasive, non life threatening, breast cancer. I chose a bilateral mastectomy with no reconstruction. All of that went great. No chemo, no radiation & no meds. That was a year ago. I tend to still get tired quickly. But then I watch one of your episodes and can't imagine how tired you must be after all the work you've done. Not only are you building a home for you and your boys, but you're building a life time of memories. Bravo! I wish ya'll (I live in King, North Carolina and we talk Southern) the very best on this journey and can't wait for the next episode.

Hi all. Saw the most amazing episode of The Gardener this week in South Africa. She puts grass cuttings but especially dried leaves into black plastic big rubbish bin bags. Sets them a bit and ties them up. She leaves them for about 3 months, just setting them once or twice. They decompose and makes the most beautiful Miley and fertilizer. Just an idea, I thought you would appreciate. God bless ❤

I would keep the existing building and move the kitchen into that room with doors to the courtyard/lawn, make your current kitchen into a lovely living or dinning room. By doing this the boys will have their own bedrooms on the opposite side of the house so when they are older they will have their own privacy and so will you. You will then have a nice horseshoe shaped house with the courtyard in-between. Regardless of what you end up doing it will look amazing.

Dear Newby family, what lovely Sunday to you all, agree with Crusoe to crush the house and rebuild. Create your beautiful family home like you envision. Keep the trees and wisteria around the house, some grooming needed for them. How opposite of you Tara, the safari woman who has seen bigger more dangerous beasts but yet like some of us cannot tolerate ants, wasps, beetles and spiders with reason. You are our favorite entertainment family on Sundays, the look of Sawyer when John retrieved that blood/iodine bottle 😮😅😊. We continue to follow you in your adventure on the farm in Portugal. Hi both - We have some contact with architects for a smaller project and our land is a bit complicated, but be prepared it may take a bit of time for the paperwork to go through. Not always the case, but as you know it can be a bit admin heavy here sometimes. But saying that, I will keep toes crossed and prayers for your dreams to come true. I also love the idea of a full view right through the building - it's going to be awesome to be in a home with that view.

Hi guys, I hesitated to offer this, but, you decided correctly.
The renovation of that place would be astronomic in cost, so, starting afresh would be my suggestion and EVERYTHING would be as you want it.
I see your friends JCB in there having such fun .
Big french picture windows, stained exposed beams in all the roof space giving a beautiful vaulted effect would be wonderful.
    I'm so envious.
Good fortune and Gods bless ings on you all.
