- American singer/song writer India Arie Simpson, better known simply as India Arie, was born in Denver, Colorado. Even though, India comes from a family of singers, she didn’t have grandiose dreams of taking things to a professional level herself because she didn’t believe she fit the part. She had a deep voice and didn’t look anything like the other people on tv who did sing for a living.

I’m so mad that India Arie didn’t play Nina Simone. She really wanted the role.
If they make another film on Nina, they should give it to her.
@@timmy841212 yes hopefully they do that
@ Candie P - India would have been Perfect playing Nina, just like Jamie Foxx played Ray Charles and Won an Oscar!!
Much Admiration and Respect for the 👑 Arie!! Love her Music and staying True to her Beautiful Self Worth!
O well better luck next time
Word. She lowkey looks like her too.
India.Arie is an artist who never gets her just due. She gives off that natural glow and vibe. Her music is so healing ❤️
Unfortunately neo soul isn't as popular as r&b.
@@imher2462 Exactly! In the early 2000's it was the Real Deal.
She is loved! Who cares a beautiful dark skin girl didn’t get huge success in a country built on white supremacy! She isn’t supposed to!
U nailed it
I have so many favorite songs by her, I can't even name them all:
"Video", "Promises", "Strength Courage & Wisdom", "Ready for Love", "Nature", "These Eyes".
I Love Her 🌹
Brown Skin is still my jam till this day. Calling her multi-talented is an understatement, she remains an icon in this business.
Yes!
Absolutely!!
before its time.... it couldnt make billboard 100... what?! in 2020/2021, it will be top charts. but she was a trailblazer during the neosoul era... smaller population... but the masses are on the melanin queen black girl magic bit, she she and that set us up. my foreva muse. helped me to go natural confused adored natty wtv but still me. it takes 13% of population to rock with something before the rest join in.
Amen!
Underated talent
I’m still upset that she didn’t win any Grammys for Acoustic Soul
The Grammys they gave her for her second album was really to make up for what they should've done for her first album
Me to
Me too
“Ready for Love” is and will always be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I love that song
Without a doubt. Very soothing and spiritual.
This!
I agree
For me, it’s Beautiful Surprise!! I used to play this song at the beginning of every wedding reception I DJed.
What I’m about to say is a controversial OPINION, so DO NOT get in y’all feelings. But the grammy thing with India and Alicia Keys, I believe was a case of colorism. The industry at large has that problem to this day. While Alicia Keys is definitely one of my favorite singers all-time I love her work. India Arie was and is just as good, if not better. While I understand it’s about “who sells,” shouldn’t a person’s talent be considered for that category? Honest question. Again not discrediting Alica Keys at all, I’m speaking about the biases in the industry. Biases that people of darker complexions are still facing. I do believe India Arie should’ve had a more prosperous career just her contemporaries. IJS…
@@chefcc9026 So, you’re basically validating my point. Thanks a lot. Be blessed, stay safe, drink plenty of water.
I can't let go of the very real possibility of colourism playing a part either. SN: What Chef say? I think they must have deleted the comment but, I love your response. Drinking plenty of water is very important. 😂
@@JuicyPopEntertainment The person basically turned the whole colorism comment on me or whatever. Basically saying that we tend to blame colorism a lot. When we’re not blaming it, we just calling it out. And I guess my comment was far too real lol. But thanks for compliment, and yes drinking water is mad important. Keep up the good work with the content, I love it. Hope to see more soon…
I wholeheartedly agree with you, and I, too, love Alicia Keys. You totally hit the nail on the head with everything you said.
I usually play Ledisi but will play Indie Arie more. Honestly her voice is just as good as any and she outshines all the other women who were almost super famous and of similar skin tone. I love singers with talent such as India Arie Melanie Fiona Ledisi and the rest of them unsung stars.
I had the pleasure of seeing her perform at Michigan State University. It was after the Alicia Grammy year and someone gave her flowers and a homemade Grammy. I know it wasn’t real but it was a touching moment and she cried. There was a thunderous ovation. It was just such a moment of solidarity. It really showed her love and loyalty from her fans.
I was there too!
That sounds beautiful 😍
India has the most soothing singing voice that would relax my mind while listening.
“Video” really helped me when I was being bullied in high school. I’ve been a huge fan every since. 💛💛💛💛
Yes it made me feel beautiful. To love the skin I'm in.
Ever since
As a dark skin sister I can truly relate
I know “I am not my hair” was not “for me” , but it gave me goosebumps and was my favorite song that year. I related to it just in a basic sense of not having to live up to other peoples perceptions of you, and that whole album was incredible. India arie is definitely under rated for the amount of talent and musical genius she possesses
India Arie is not what the industry wants to promote so they’re not gonna give her the credit she deserves to me she is a beautiful artist & her music is talented
This was refreshing. She's a real person.
Definitely.
She's always been gorgeous and still is. She popularized the "soul sista" movement in the early 2000s and I firmly believe we collectively as R&B listeners and as a community don't give her enough shine for highlighting an array of problematic things that were going on back then of the precious beloved y2k era (e.g. colorism, lack of Afrocentric acceptance, body-shaming, etc.) She's always been a leader.
She makes timeless music! Timeless! That song she made about love was so effortless and organic! She has many hits! Just never mainstream
Which one
@@damnmuggle right gir! But she said the internet on fire back in the day with "i am ready for loveee"...HER WORK IS MASTERFUL
She does make timeless music.
People are so stupid! An ARTIST can’t take an artistry picture without being dragged. WTF is wrong with everybody??
Damn I was today years old when I found out about her and Chris Tucker going on a few dates😳😳 she don't seem like the type that would date a industry person just my opinion🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
But didn't she once date Musiq Soulchild?
@@tami8458 yep
Her and Chris Tucker look kind of "off" as a couple to me, 😳 sorry lol.
I thought she was currently in a relationship with David Banner 🤷🏾♀️
@@tami8458 Soulchild was the only one I ever knew about.
India Arie is a true artist! Her voice and songwriting skills are so comforting. Maybe because she’s real and stands out in the music industry! 💕
Her and Chris Tucker dated at some point ? Had no idea. I always loved her music.
I never knew that either.
Voyage to India will forever be a classic album
I still listen to Headed in the Right Direction, such an inspirational song for me.
She is such a beautiful song bird. Loved India’s music, she is so smart and talented.🥰
Really miss this kind of music 😭
Some say she's overlooked but she's really just highly protected by God. She got her whole soul and I love to see it.
Wow , profound!!!! Yes , She has kept her soul intact !!! Deep, beautiful graceful and real, grounded !!! Yes she was and is protected !
Never forget when India.Arie sang on the PBS Kids show Between the Lions and she sang about outlaw words
yes omg dug that out my core memory lol
Omg yessss I always loved seeing her
Damn I didn't even know that was her til now
Omg really?! 😳
India is the definition of raw, pure talent and beauty. She is in the same class as people like Sade, Anita Baker to name a few. (I wouldn't mind having that Sade t-shirt she had on in this video 😝). But yeah; other artists that are out today can't touch her. Thank you for this video because I have wondered what was going on with her lately. ❤️
Musician India Arie changed my teenage life when she debuted with song Video in year 2001 when I was age 16 going on 17. That song means so much to me. :) Thank you for posting about musician India Arie.
I respect her for the ability to tell a story. She's such a phenomenal writer ❤️
Acoustic Soul still gets monthly play at my house!💕 India is one of the rare artist who never compromise her artistry or tried to switch up to stay relevant she has been the same “video girl” since 2001!
Honestly, when Lauryn Hill was rising with singing voice on top of her solo album...., it was an impossibly difficult and competitive period and the music was changing... Meshell Ndegeocello, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, etc. It was a great time but an intense time for black female artists.
Yes indeed, I remember it like it was yesterday......I wish that intensity would return!
India you don’t have to explain nothing to no one. Live your life beautiful. Brown Skin is still one of my favorite songs
A true queen! Makes such inspirational music and never involved in drama...
Jealous and Stupidity goes together! People always have something negative to say about someone else. Whatever caused her skin issues is something she had to deal with! It's just like my ex-wife making accusations about me before and after we found out that I had a brain tumor pressing against my pituitary gland and my optic nerves back in 2010, that had been growing for 14 years before it was ever found! Some things happen to a person's body that cannot be explained! I love her songs! And as a fan, that's all she needs to share with me. Her personal life; who she dates? That's none of my business. Why do so many believe it's theirs? She is a Beautiful Queen!!! Be happy for her success.
"The people said I was sharp on TV
At the grammys, though they tried to India Arie me..." - Common
I visit that album way more than Alicia Keys solo debut although both were fantastic she got robbed that year.... Period.
But I can't lie Voyage to India was so amazing I felt privileged to even be listening to it..." The truth.. Get it together.. Beautiful surprise" .....she makes and shares love stories in a way that she has her own lane.
She is just different and when u are different you have to accept that the public may or may not get it.. But u can't take away that era of music.. Where neo soul.. R&b and hip-hop were amazing.. Voyage to India is still in rotation as well as acoustic soul.... Timeless music
So many amazing female R&B singers debuted in 2001...India Arie, Alicia Keys, Sunshine Anderson, Truth Hurts, Blu Cantrell, Christina Milian, and there's probably more that just aren't coming to mind right now.
i mean alicia did her thing from the jump. her grammy’s were well deserved
@@kaylabey facts. But to win none out of all those nominations... Nah she got robbed
@@TheNewgreatlife indeed... Those were amazing times... Definitely miss them

I LOVE India Arie. Her music has helped me through some very difficult times in my life. She is a true QUEEN. Thanks for doing this. 🖤🖤
It's funny how the lyrics to Video become more relevant every year. Love her ❤
Brown Skin is my jam! But Video came out at a perfect time for me. I was in 8th grade, a late bloomer and needed those lyrics.
She is in my top 3 for best r&b aingera of ALL time. I just love her. Everything about her is great. Her songs have blessed my life so much. I remember when I was in high school, me and 2 of my friends listened to her 3rd album every day on the school bus. I’m so thankful that we had her as a role model
She was my pick to play Nina Simone but knowing Hollywood smh
She would've been Excellent in that role much better than Zoe💎💎💎
Her or Heather Headley would have been perfect to play Nina Simone
@@taylordowning2533 I see it now true
India.Arie deserves her flowers!
India is such a lovely songstress, i still listen to her,She has raw natrual talent...🌟🌟🌟
She is a great artist who's music is very refreshing and she always stays true to herself. No matter the hardships she faced in her career her music is timeless. Great video.
I remember that Grammy's were she painfully lost to U2. She and Bono were standing next to other backstage when they were announcing the nominees for that category (Record of the year), I always remember the slight disappointment in her face when U2's name was called out, he did hug her though (if memory serves me well) before heading to the stage .
I remember that moment as well. She gracefully was bowing in front of him I think, 🤔 and he was equally showing her the same respect. Something to that matter. Pretty sure it's probably on the internet somewhere.
Heather Headley next please 🥺🙏🏾?
Omg yess
All I could hear while reading this comment was “I wish I wasn’t in love with you” 🎶😂
I looove “Video” and “Brown Skin” especially ❤️ so relatable 😌💅🏽
Love love her music
Anytime you have a black artist singing about self love, and teaching young black girls to love and respect themselves they don't last long.
She’s an amazing performer. Her concerts are dreamy. Such a lady and great talent.
I was blessed to see her live, such an amazing talent!
India is an amazing artist and songwriter who will be spoken about alongside some of the greats of our time. So many amazing artist don’t get the shine they deserve on talent alone which is why American radio should just play good music, no more payola, just good music by talented artists.
Thanks for doing this little vid about Indie Arie. We hear far too little of her! She’s such a great artist.
I’m so glad I came across this video! I haven’t thought of her much, lately, but she was one of my favorites growing up! I wish music could still be this genuine.😔
can we just talk about how beautiful this woman is....wow
Love these stories so much!! This was a great episode!!
I LOVE India Arie's music! Its so soulful, spiritual, uplifting, encouraging and inspiring. My all time favorite song by her is Video. My favorite albums by her is her first two albums and especially her debut album Acoustic Soul. She is beautiful, immensely talented and never got her just due in the music industry. She deserves more credit and recognition.
I remember when she lost those Grammys in 2002, and while I agree Alicia Keys is a great artist, the Grammys were wrong to snub India like that. U2 were backstage with when both were nominated in the same category, and when U2's name was called they had to choose between consoling her and accepting the award on stage. She did win two sympathy Grammys a year later though.
Oh, and the version of I Am Not My Hair she did with P!nk should have been released as a single.
I thought she lost out to Beyonce as well
@@lisajohnson1775 I'm not sure Beyoncé released solo material in 2001
@@tami8458No Beyonce release her debut album in 2003.

Great video as always. I love India’s songs especially Video and Get it Together. Beautiful woman and she has that calm presence. Any woman that likes Sade is ok with me.
She was robbed of those Grammys.
India is a beautiful talented young woman that I have followed from day one. Love your music and your look! Keep it coming, I hope you put something out soon.❤️🙏🏽
I did not know she was with Chris Tucker. Wow!
India Aire is such an amazing n talented singer. My favorite song by her is The Truth. It’s still on a few of my playlists
I NEVER NEW STEVIE WONDER LOVED HERR!! omg im sure she had the other girls so jealous!
I am ready for loveeeee ...omg she is ICONIC
I love her voice. I used to work at a clothing store that played a song of hers with John mellancamp. It was soooo good. I STILL to this day can’t find that track. Smh. I miss her sound
India still looks radiant 😍
Her song Purify Me was also fire too!! The video for Purify Me featured a cameo appearance from actress Kimberly Elise!!

Look at that subscription rate go up. Love to see it.
I just love her always have acoustic soul and love and politics hold a very special place in my heart.
I actually went back and downloaded her whole music catalog from 2001 to 2019
This was a good video. I love how India continued growing. Every picture showed her growth and she got more beautiful with every year.
Her music nurtures & heals. A staple around these parts. Listening to 'Sacred Space' right now.🎶🎵🙏🏽🌼♥🌼♥🌼♥🌼♥🌼

India's music has always played such a huge role in my life. It's just so full of light and life. An moved me through monumental moments. It realness just can't be denied.
I always Thought She would have been Perfect for the Role of Nina Simone in Movies about Her...And She can Sing!!!

That "skin condition" must have been some good old-fashioned Stress!!! A relaxing vacation fixed that right up! 🙌
Exactly!!!
I heard stress could make you break out in hives, it could’ve been that.
India always been a beautiful natural queen and songs always timeless 👑
Queen India Irie, is one of the elements. I've seen this amazing songstress 4 times. She ministers music, not just sing it. India is a brilliant singer, and Songwriter. I Love...Love ....Love India, have seen her live once....Awesome performer!!! Wishing her the Best!!!
Beautiful and talented. First album is still one of my favorite albums of all time.
I remember when India lost to Alicia keys. The look on her face said it all like dang, she won another award??? I'm sure she was happy for Alicia, but it must've stung just a little.
Dang I felt sad for India Alicia Keys deserves winning awards but Indie shouldve won like 2 awards.Grammys sucks
Great artist and good content.
Always loved her music ❤️❤️ and still do. Talented neo Soul sister.
