  • “As a species, we’ve always been discoverers and adventurers, and space and the deep ocean are some of the last frontiers,” said Paul Allen. The late Allen’s 126.2-metre Octopus is one of the most recognisable and well known superyachts in the world, by many opinions setting the standard for true ‘explorer’ superyachts. An explorer superyacht is a robust yacht, built with the intention of covering long distances, uncovering remote corners of the world and often with the additional point of acting as a research vessel.
In the spirit of discovery and exploration, SuperYacht Times has compiled a list of some of the largest explorer yachts currently in operation, as well as a number which are currently under construction.

Why do you guys keep insisting on calling REV a yacht? It's literally called 'research and expedition vessel', there is no 'yacht' in it's name nor anywhere on the company website.

Hello Mojojojo_BB! Actually a large portion of the vessel's interior volume is dedicated to private use by the owner, with a luxury interior design completed by yacht designer H2 Yacht Design. You can find out all about her in our website 🙌

@@superyachttimes I know all that, but that doesn't change the intended purpose of the ship. All that means is that the owner wants his personal space on board to match the lifestyle he's used to. And I read their website, where the word yacht is never mentioned.

REV was always intended as a hybrid between a yacht and a research ship. That's why it can accommodate 36 GUESTS in addition to 54 crew and/or scientists. In fact, in charter configuration there could be no scientists on board at all. Like a yacht it has several pools and hot tubs on board and would enable a rich person to enjoy a luxury yacht charter experience with or without an accompanying scientific expedition. Maybe the owner, Kjell Inge Røkke, simply avoided to call it a yacht so that he can classify the expense as a project in line with his charitable activities? In any case, there are more reasons to include it on a list of explorer yachts than omitting the vessel.
