    The Cost of Having a Personal Life While in Residency (or the story of the time I wet the bed as an adult) - Dr. Buck tells a story about ridiculous hours as a medical resident and trying to entertain his parents while they were visiting town...also how all this led to him wetting the bed and shopping for hunting gear.

      That's a tough one. My kid dated a girl all through med school and they just broke up during his 2nd year of residency. My wife took it really hard because she loved that girl like a daughter. The distance was what finally did them in I was told (she in CA and him in MI) Of course my wife blames him for not putting a ring on her finger a year or two ago.

    Love your videos Dr. P, you're an inspiration and incredible resource for aspiring physicians like myself. I was wondering if you could make a video on pros/cons of getting a dual MD/MBA or pursuing an MBA later in your medical career? And specifically how it could help in a surgical specialty?

    Hi Dr Buck, I love the RUclips channel however I do have a question. I myself am an aspiring doctor and I am worried about the way that residency is done in the United States. I’m sure as you are well aware of the average resident works over 80 hours a week. Resident depression rates are way above those of the general population and over 20% of deaths of those in the health field between ages of 25-35 are through suicide. Meanwhile in other countries the average work week for a resident is often as low as 48 hours (not far off from a normal work week) and yet there is no negative impact on the patient care. Why is it you think that the medical system in the United States is this way and do you think that there is anything that can be done about it. Also would you be willing to speak up for better working conditions for residents.

    How is peeing the bed a sign of commitment? Lol

    • @angelika28970
      @angelika28970 5 лет назад +27

      Dont you get it? He was so tired from overworking and pleasing his friends and family, that when he went to sleep (finally) he was so tired, that even tho he had to pee he didnt wake up. Which means that his need for sleep was far greater than his need to pee. Otherwise he wouldve woken up in order to go to the toilet. But he didnt. So he wet his bed. Working as a doctor so many hours without sleep is exhausting. You have to think all the time, asses the situation, find the treatment that suits each patient, do surgeries, handle people all the time (which is very draining if you are not a very social person) etc.

    • @HashemSmashem
      @HashemSmashem 5 лет назад +2

      @@angelika28970 or it also could be related to alcohol that he had with his family haha. I'm just trolling lol. I see what you're saying. And I hope standards of commitment aren't measured by whether you wet the bed or not haha.

    • @sunriselotus
      @sunriselotus 3 месяца назад +1

      I don’t think this is commitment. He was tired, his body needed rest, but he wanted to go out like a normal person. You can do whatever you want to your body but it has its limits. I don’t think what he is saying needs to be glorified. Hurting yourself to help others is not bravery. And he also should have just rested instead of going out but he did that instead. You can be the greatest doctor there is but you still have a body. When you start to disrespect it, problems will start to come. People who support this kind of thinking in the video will just get excited and will just push them selves to the extreme. I understand the commitment aspect and why it’s important but it’s also important to take care of yourself and this is clearly sending the wrong message.

    You are a surgeon because you like helping people. As a surgeon you make a significant amount of money, so why have you set such a high fee to allow students to access to your “secret study hacks”? By having this expensive price tag you are limiting the amount of people you can help become doctors. Consequently, you are denying students of low income families who have aspirations to become doctors the ability to learn from your depth of knowledge. Please lower the fee to a reasonable price.

    • @romainerattray3907
      @romainerattray3907 5 лет назад +16

      People are willing to fork out unnecessary amounts of cash on phones, cars, jewellery so why should the price be cheap for things that will actually develop their lives? Dr.Parker is a doctor but he is not running a charity business here. Suppose he worked with other people for this product and the agreement was already set in stone for the price? We dont know these things, so we cant just expect whatever. People on the web can always look for study hacks elsewhere and get through, it is not this gentleman's responsibility. We need to change this mentality of handouts handouts handouts. If you want it, you pay for it. He is not forcing anybody to get the product.
