  • So like many of you classic Mercedes owners, I've been chasing slight to moderate vibrations in each of my cars. In my 500sl, the vibrations occured at about 70-80mph and will vary in intensity and can pulsate. Hopefully we can get this fixed. Let's change out the steering damper or shock absorber.

That's funny you posted this I just put a massive $2300 order in with Autohaus and the MB dealer for a ton of suspension (H&R springs, new F/R Bilsteins, Lemfoerder control arms, Corteco strut mounts) along with a bunch of maintenance items like belt and tensioner, fan clutch, etc. I was looking around on Autohaus before ordering and saw the steering damper for $27 so just threw it in since I figured it would be clapped out too lol.

Oh awesome. Yes totally worth doing. Also found out the name of the other part is a center drag link. This is part number I found online but need to verify on car. 129 460 04 05

Easy fix and cheap fix that makes a difference. I'm going to do on my 95 s500 too

I just swapped out both front shock mounts on my '98 R129 after noticing they were severely cracked. A simple and quick job that is a major improvement in ride quality! The harshness of road impacts is gone and the car rides like new again. Most importantly, the vibration from 60-80 is now gone! I chased that for months and it was the mount the whole time. I have also ordered the drag link and stabilizer that was worn just like yours. Can't wait to get the parts and test on the freeway.

great video thanks. is there enough room for the torque wrench to get on top where the nut is, obviously there is but i wondered if you had and problem with torque wrench length, thanks

Cool videos you've got! I have a 97 S500 W140 and there is a slight vibration in steering wheel between 60-80 kmh. I've completely overhauled my front suspension with brand new branded parts but that slight vibration is still there. I want it to run perfectly smooth same as you do but the age got somewhere it these cars you can't find where straight away. Well at least my motor and trans are serviced and work as they should and I can drive my car to any long distance I would like to. Very best wishes to you and keep the old Mercs running!

This has been an ongoing thing for me. I have it narrowed down to two things it might be still. I’m going to swap out my rotors and pads because they may be warped causing vibration. If that doesn’t work I will move on to drive shaft and do the center support bearing and bushing and than the flex discs

@@petescarport I wish you best of luck and thanks again for great videos! I've done rotors and pads on mine together with front flex disc, motor and trans mounts but still slight vibration not solved :) I even put some tape on the bearing shaft where you put the wheels on (factory 16s), wheels sit very tight with no play, but still that didn't help. Anyway I love my car same as you do and enjoy every moment driving it.

Hey, I know that it’s a long shot, but did you ever replace the Draglink (Center Link)?
    If you did,
Would you ever be so kind as to let me know what the Torque specs are? I can’t find them anywhere, and books take a long time to ship.

I have been trying to chase a slight vibration at highway speed (70+). It seems to come and go as I drive. I don't have any play in the suspension and it doesn't happen under hard acceleration. The motor mounts, transmission mount, and flex discs were replaced by the previous owner 3 years ago and look good. The only thing I can think of at the moment but have not checked is the alignment of the drive shaft. If it is one spline off, do you think that could cause it?

So same thing I have been chasing along with many many other members of the community. Talking to techs they said since this vehicle is so long even a slight vibration in the vechicle can cause you to feel through out. I have done most of these items as well. The one that I haven’t touched is the steering box or the pitman and idler arm. I have to look into this because on my van I changed these two out and it made a world of difference

Have the same problem with my 500sl. Thought it was the wheels not balance but gonna change the damper. Did you have any luck figuring the cause of the vibration?

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  7 месяцев назад +1

Yes it was mostly coming from a warn out pitman arm. Same area and you should be able to visually inspect

I'm not 100% sure but the part at 8:30 could possibly be called the idler arm.

Hudaman45 thanks so much. I searched using that name and found the part but they call it a drag link. Here is link to part.

The part that needs to be replaced is the drag link since it contains the ball joints. The arm that the ball joint mounts into is called the idler arm. So you're partially correct lol.
